Brikama Rally
Dear Editors,
In a bid to help communicate more comprehensively with the Gambian people, the UDP would like to initiate a process in which you as editors of online media can be provided background briefing on all news making activities of the party in time for you to be able to provide coverage of these activities. We want to provide you with ample time and information to allow you to give the best reports to your readership. Additionally, we would communicate to you instances when we want to conduct a news conference with some of the party leadership when important issues need to discussed with the media. We recognize the critical role your constantly evolving media platforms are playing in keeping the Gambian people informed and UDP and its allies would like to participate fully in your quest to inform.
To get the ball rolling, we are pleased to inform you that the Party would be holding a mass rally in the city of Brikama this Saturday, September 18th, 2010. We invite you to deploy your normal resources and correspondents to cover the event. If any of you wish to make special arrangements such as attempts to broadcast audio or video recording of the event and would like some logistical help in that pursuit, we would provide all the help we can give. We would also like to arrange a news conference with the party leader, Mr. Ousainu Darboe, a day or so following the rally to expound on the themes articulated at the rally and to answer any follow-up questions you may have on the issues raised.
The rally itself is expected to be centered on the following four main issues to be articulated by the party leader and the local party leaders:
The economy: Mr. Darboe is expected to comment extensively about the severe economic hardships that many Gambian families are facing. The people confront many hardships everyday in trying to provide for their families. Farmers are especially frustrated in the nonexistent agricultural policies that have left thousands of them nearly destitute with no reliable help to either cultivate or market the little they produce on their own. He will also emphasize how incompetence, corruption, wasteful spending has so thoroughly devastated the economy with deficits as far as the eye can see. The ever increasing prices of consumer goods is diminishing the purchasing power of the average Gambian to where most families have long given up on eating three square meals a day. He will say the economy in it's current state only works for the very person who has effectively destroyed it and that is none other than Yahya Jammeh as he continues to aggressively and selfishly pursue business interests using illegal, immoral and unfair tactics to acquire wealth. He will share an alternative vision in which every Gambian would be able to fully participate in growing the economy with the help of a government that is singularly focused on providing them with the environment, resources, and attention they need to succeed in their varied endeavors. Mr. Darboe will strongly condemn Yahya Jammeh's vision of a Gambia where citizens are expected to queue up to him for their sustenance. Jammeh has thoroughly divested entrepreneurial Gambians of all their national resources and severely restricted their personal initiatives to succeed on their own and effectively be their feudal lord. Jammeh has ventured into all spheres of business in Gambia to compete unfairly with hardworking private businesses.
The Judiciary: The party leader would take strong exception to the systematic deterioration of the system of justice that seems to have unbound energy in persecuting political opponents for exercising their fundamental rights such the case of Femi Peters and many others. The same judiciary is letting drug traffickers plea bargain their way out with a jail free card. As a result the level and nature of drug trafficking has now reached proportions similar to what is seen in major trafficking hubs around the world. This is severely endangering our nation’s security and destroying our reputation around the world. This will lead to Gambians to be scrutinized more than ever when they travel anywhere in the world. Mr. Darboe will assert that the government's purported policy of zero tolerance for drugs do not match its record of prosecution and policing. Like every other slogan of the regime such as vision 2020, Silicon Valley aspirations, it is all empty rhetoric. He will pledge a real program that would address the menace of drugs as an urgent national security matter with the help of determined and professional law enforcement folks not pre-occupied with going after innocent citizens for perceived political crimes. He will remind the people that apart from the exponential growth in drug trafficking and consumption, every other category of violent crime has risen sharply under the reign of Yahya Jammeh despite the tripling of the number of people in the security services during the same period. There are terrifying numbers of murders, armed robberies, rapes, cattle rustling, and home invasions all over the country despite the intrusive presence of the security services as evidenced by the excessive number of checkpoints clogging the roads.
Unified Opposition: The party leader would report to the gathering and by extension to the nation the efforts the UDP has made and will continue to make to bring about a unified opposition to face the President in 2011. Mr. Darboe understands the importance of an opposition that can speak with one voice to counter APRC propaganda machine that has no bounds. This is what the Gambian people want and he will do his utmost without leaving any stone unturned to make it happen. The opposition parties have too many important issues in common to let this opportunity slip away again. To that end he will speak directly to PDOIS and in particular their designee for intra-party relations Hon. Sedia Jatta by restating his desire to meet promptly at the venue and timing of Mr. Jatta's choosing. He will invoke the best of Gambian traditional practice by urging Mr. Jatta to exercise his prerogative as his elder and invite him (Ousainou) to sit down and work out this important piece of national business that can't wait as the election is almost upon us. Other opposition parties will further engaged to work out a path to this unity.
The Vote: Finally Mr. Darboe would urge every Gambian to assign him/herself a role in building the democracy he/she aspires to by participating fully. This begins with the important step of registering and ensuring that they make sure all their friends and families also register to vote. He would ask the voters to vote for the opposition overwhelmingly so that all can see that the vote is won by the opposition. He would promise them that there votes would be defended by the opposition at any cost. He would plead with the people to believe in the possibilities that change would bring to them and that the Gambian people deserve a government that respects them, guards their rights and is singularly focused on providing them with opportunities to find their station in life. That they needn't live in perpetual fear of their own government and that only the Gambian people can change their predicament. We hope a beneficial and cooperative relationship between the party and the members of the media would ensue as you hold us accountable in the pursuit of your chosen vocation by probing, questioning, and criticizing as you inform your readers. We pledge our full cooperation at all times.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.
Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |

I think both camps (UDP and NADD) must be thanked for their open stance in welcoming the other. I hope others like Hamat joins them in this positive venture. This is indeed re-assuring.
Regards, Yero.

The plight of ordinary Gambian people is never far from my mind.
People should have hope of change. Things in UK changed when UNIONS gave the ordinary working person a voice. RIGHTS were established. |

Just to clarify; the reference made to Hon. Sidia Jatta in the UDP Communiqué is not a response to PDOIS's announcement that they have chosen him [Sidia ]as a contact person for inter-party talks but an acknowledgement of the telephone conversation that transpired between the UDP leader and Hon. Jatta, and the agreement reached thereto. It should be noted that Sidia is not an official member of PDOIS. However, we hope that his nexus with the PDOIS leadership will help engender dialogue since the PDOIS leadership particularly Halifa Sallah would not even return calls from the UDP leader let alone talk to him.

I support the 'under dog' in any society. The middle classes already have lifes advantages and the upper classes have too much already!
I believe in a vote for all, a voice for all. Human rights and equality of opportunity.
I am a socialist. |

This move is sensible and looks promising. Gambia under Yaya Jammeh is one big hell hole. Down with armed July bandits. |

Toubab.....are you old enough to remember citizen smith? He was my hero: 'Power to the people!'.
The actor was Robert Lindsay who I was lucky enough to see in the play Onassis on Thursday night in Derby. (Sorry this is off post, but I was very excited about going to see my hero!) |

Maggie said when socialists talk about narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor, they are talking about narrowing the gap at the lower end, not the upper end of the wealth ladder. I find that to be scary and totally unacceptable. I think it should be about helping the poor to catch up with the rich, not the other way around. Oh! I am derailing here. This column is for Gambia politics, not international politics.

Sedia Jatta was duly elected Party Chairman/President at the recently concluded PDOIS congress and Halifa Sallah Secretary General last time i checked. Why do you always have to throw spanners in the works with your twisted mind. NADD is a union of political parties comprising PDOIS and other parties. You will never twist facts to suit your agenda while we are here. I know it is your wish for continuous disharmony between UDP and PDOIS but i hope you are on your own.quote: Originally posted by Nyarikangbanna
