NADD Chairman urges UDP Leader To Write……
Wednesday 6 October 2010

Mr. Landing Jallow Sonko, chairman of the National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD) has called on the leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Ousainou Darboe to write and invite political parties in the country if he means his declaration for dialogue.
Jallow Sonko’s call came barley two weeks following lawyer Ousainou Darboe’s pronouncement at a UDP rally in Brikama that his party is open to dialogue for the united front and most especially for the common interest of Gambian people.
Darboe told supporters recently that it is only by coming together through dialogue that the opposition can make headway in the elections. But Mr. Sonko said. “Since the creation of NADD, we are open to dialogue and we believe that it is only political alliance can vote the incumbent president out of office. If Ousainou Darboe as the leader of the UDP is interested in political dialogue for the forthcoming elections, he needs to write and invite all parties for a discussion, but not to stand in a public meeting and call for dialogue.”
Jallow Sonko, former local government and land’s minister told The Voice newspaper in an interview at home, that there is a need for a united front in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
He explains that NADD was established as a tactical alliance but also registered as political party with the goal to vote the incumbent out of office, but on the way, the journey was cut short by some of the parties and this undermine the objective of NADD in the 2006 presidential and 2007 parliamentary elections.
According to him, currently, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and PDOIS are the only members of NADD and the two parties are still calling on other political parties and Gambians for a united front in the forthcoming elections.
“One party cannot unseat the incumbent, big or small, we need to come together and vote for one person for the change we need. We need to dialogue as soon as possible for the common good of our people and not for we the leaders.
If Ousainou Darboe, is ready for dialogue with the rest of the parties, he knows all the parties’ addresses and contact persons, let him write and set a date in his letter and also mention where he wants the meeting to be held. We are ready and all the political parties know that NADD is ready for dialogue and also to re-launch the coalition for change”.
He disclosed that over the years, NADD has written to all the parties for a dialogue, but it is only PPP and PDOIS that answer to their call.
On achievement, he said NADD has contested in seven by-elections, won four and lost three, while noting if all has gone as was planned then the ruling party and its leader would have been history.
Asked what the cause of the break of the party was in 2006. Sonko said no one has to be held responsible for what has happened. At this point, he said there is no place for shifting blames, but to look forward for a solution of addressing the problems that the country is faced with.
He called on political parties to unite and work towards one common goal, which is to oust president Jammeh, but was quick to add that the only way-out in 2011 is a common approach, ‘one candidate for the opposition’.

I understand why LJ Sonko is coming out and saying what he said. He is being overlooked in this whole process of reaching out to others by the UDP. Maybe that is a mistake the UDP needs to rectify as soon as possible. Perhaps it might be as a result of lack of communication from OJ who is the focal point for the UDP on the PPP side. Anway and having said that though, I must add that there is no active political party in the Gambia whose leadership/official has not been contacted in person by the UDP over this issue. Therefore, it is wrong to insuniate that the UDP leader only made his call for dialogue in public. The public call was preceded by several discussions and attempted discussions, some through letters, in private.

LJ'S call for a common approach is indeed a positive one and I hope the UDP will reach out to him sooner rather than later. As the largest opposition party in the country, it their responsibility to ensure that all stakeholders are reached out to regardless of their anticipated responses.

Regards

The UDP leader must not be the presidential candidate of united opposition if unity happens. He is about to retire, and noooo one will vote for the uncertainty. Who is going to replace him when retired? Even he is elected (It is unlikely), there will be instability. Best Model for unity is; UDP would be the single party running for opposition for national assembly and the better, younger, smarter, more dynamic, more motivated and more charismatic leader Halifa Sallah to be the presidential candidate. He is more like a Mandela type of leader, willing to go prison unlike UDP leader sending others to the battle. Even Halifa is not going to win, but he will be able to build the support for 2016.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

Stop urging UDP to reach out to personalities in any honest call for dialogue. This is not about personalities, it is about an inter-party dialogue. This attempt at divide and conquer tactics will not work. Your fixation with personalities will only yield you disharmony along the way and marginalisation of very important players in the struggle. Just like you admitted has been the case of Landing Jallow Sonko. There are many more important personalities everwhere if you care look. Tell your party to get their act together and start acting in a professional and mature manner expected of the biggest political party. Start working on basic internal strategy and protocol within your party for fcuk sake.

He disclosed that over the years, NADD has written to all the parties for a dialogue, but it is only PPP and PDOIS that answer to their call.

Atleast no imbecile can accuse Halifa Sallah of acting alone. This a further manisfestation of the concerted collaboration within NADD by it executive. Maybe the first point in diplomacy for the UDP is to appologise for ignoring all those NADD correspondences over the years instead of smearing people for ignoring the recent calls.
