Use and dump is the most likely outcome but then politicians are a different species from us common people as the way they perceive things differ from the general stance/position. I wish him well and hope he does not suffer like he did in the past. Then it was for the people but the next time he does suffer it would be for his personal involvement with the system, in his own interest so to speak. If he was betrayed by the Gambian electorate and feels he should now fend for himself henceforth that is his choice and bon voyage to him .

Kaaniba, I disagree that politicians are a difference species. It is a myth and false image that corrupt politicians came to earn. They are people like us who we dine and wine together daily. Some are our own blood brothers and sisters.

This notion of politicians being different is at best responsible for their irresponsible behaviors anytime they assume office. It is only greed, power and selfishness that leads them to turn from the humble beings they usually are before getting into office. It is a clear manifestation of human selfishness and exploitation of their fellow citizens.

There are still absolute honest people involved in politics that will never compromise their ethics and principles for position of power. No one has mention names of honest people like Sedia Jatta, Sam Sarr, Halifa who have been around through the PPP and never attempted to switch allegiance.

This is a clear testimony that hate them or like them, they stand out at all times and it is people like them that we need in our politics. History is vindicating their principles of leadership every minute.

There is no entitlement in politics and those who think they are entile to a throne will go down always.

Tell me about it bro !I have no bones to crack over the said merits of your aforementioned politicians, In fact I admire their resilience .The way I see it is that; good as they are ,they have taken far too long to make head way I mean any major break through in the political field. Are they not the longest surviving party now seeing that their fore runners PPP and NCP have should I say gone fallow. They are well seeded but as I see it have not sprouted to be giants yet. Perhaps with time and perseverance they shall emerge so.Thanks for pointing your opinion which runs contrary to mines and thats okay by me , cheers any way.

Well said Kaanibaa, sometimes long survival equates greatness. However, I will agree with you that these folks have not been able to make a break through in the political arena. I will rightfully admit that their brand of politics supercedes the political maturity in the Gambia.

The social status and political awareness in the Gambia makes it almost practically impossible to educate and convince people to change their way of life and thinking. One ought to know what rightfully belongs to one before you can claim it. This is something Halifa alludes to all the time. If our people don't know what their civic rights are they cannot comprehent the way to exercise those rights. This civic education is certainly a daunting task for anybody and for these folks for that matter.

From another angle though, anybody who understands the impact of civic education and change of a generation, one will rightfully admit that the very people who are debating on these forums daily are a biproduct of a contineous civic education and campaign from PDOIS folks. Anyone who was in school in the late 80s to early 90s and until now will undeniably admit that they owe their political awareness largely due to these folks.

It is also an undeniable fact that members of PDOIS functions as a government out of office - meaning a lot of people and institutions looks to their interpretation of policies and programs. They serve in their own way as a social institution that helps the ordinary people right from their headquarters in Serekunda.

As the saying goes, "good guys always finish last" is well reflected on the sacrifice of these folks. Knowing them very well, one will admire the fact that these folks will go to the grave with their dignity and little political success, than compromise principle in place of worldly wealth and flamboyant life styes.

I personally admire honestly, knowledge and humbleness displayed in any human soul.

As Dr. King once said "If a man cannot find what to die for, then they ain't worth living".

Spot on my friend . I agree with the points you made and i also wish that they are understood. I actually met both man at their individual homes and have seen how they live. Very modest , down to earth and so very approachable, one wonders at times if they are for real. Some times they turn out to be winners and that would be wonderful for all i do trust them you know.

Trust is the key word my friend. This is what is rare in politics. People get trusted until they get into office, then all we know hell gets loose and they go south. Sedia and others though, the kind of life style they are living shows what kind of leaders they will always be regardless of position.

It is because of the same trust in them why we shouldn't hesitate to team them up with Darboe and other opposition figures. Only if we can succeed in putting them with any other team, voice of reason; conscience, and dignity will influence the rest. Knowledge and respect is a powerful tool that when combine with zeal a great outcome could be achieved.

At this point, honestly we should be looking above and beyond partisan politics. We are yearning for a team that will sit side by side and decide the future of our nation. A team that looks at Gambia as one family that needs rescue. A team that looks beyond material wealth and fame. One that sees themselves in every one they look at. This kind of team, we came this close to achieving the last time around.

I hope we try to put together another coalition that will look at starting with baby steps in putting us back on the path for social and political independence, instead of the mistake we made trying to change everything at once.

"Where there is will, there is a way" Go Gambia, let sanity prevail over indecency. Let principle and moral conviction prevail over euphoria. Let respect, dignity and collective welbeing prevail over personal achievement and control.

BY OMAR JOOF/COURTESY OF THE GPOST

quote:
omsj57@hotmail.com Waa Juwara: Still with The Opposition

Compatriots and friends of The Gambia. On behalf of The External Wing of The National Democratic Action Movement (NDAM), I suggest that we all treat with cautionallegations in some sections of The Gambian media that our movement's Secretary General Lamin Waa Juwara has assumed membership of the ruling APRC. As far as we know, Mr Juwara has not resigned from his position at the helm of affairs in NDAM. Furthermore, the discussions we have concluded with him do not in anyway corroborate the contents of recent media reports on him. In fact this morning, Waa reaffirmed his membership of the opposition to our representative and his narrative of what took place in Niamina, and what he said at the event in question, is substantantively different from what is being reflected in some media reports. Based on what we are able to get from our representative who spoke with him this morning, we expect Waa to take legal action against the relevant media houses unless they retract their stories.Meanwhile, The External Wing of NDAM is at work trying to come out with a paper on issues such as Lamin Waa Juwara's involvements at The Brikama Area Council since last year. In conclusion, we wish to assure everyone that we are very much part of The Gambian opposition, and that we are determined to remain so until the ruling APRC is constitutionally removed from power.THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!!!!!

Omar Joof,Assistant info.sec./External Wingof NDAM.

My response:

Bro Omar,

This is a sincere take from the NDAM leadership both at home and abroad.

The point observed though Mr. Juwara has been speaking in their political get-togethers. In fact, this was live on GRTS. Such has become a trend now of his deflection. First, it was when he attended the party for Dankunku's APRC MP. Mr. Juwara gave his reason as him being an elderly person which is respected. Second, third and fourth -stories ran by the Point and Observer respectively.

On the side of Gainako, we won't hesitate to rejoin to the story once determined otherwise. I support Waa's coming out to state his position clearly. People should also give Mr. Juwara the chance to state his position. Here is what solo filed with us, thus:

http://gainako.com/fejango/Issue~262-2008/

quote:
According to Kebba Dibba, Mr. Lamin Waa Juwara also addressed a large gathering at Katamina in

Niamina District where a water project has been initiated and praised president Jammeh that no one

should call Jammeh a dictator because he has submitted himself to the Gambian people; that he

Juwara has joined Jammeh for development. GRTS Kebba Dibba also said he has observed during

the mass rally in Soma that one man who followed president Jammeh with ill intentions eventually fell

down ostensibly because of Jammeh's supernatural powers.

Regards & thanks for your concerns.

Well well well,

First, thanks bro Dalton1 for the above masterly words.

Now,if going by what Mr JOOF had said about contacting his party leader and him confirming to them that he is still with the Gambia opposition, then the whole thing becomes hypocretical.
How can Waa of all people an opposition party leader attend a ruling party meeting giving a speach calling the man he want to unseat from power as ,,,,or what a ever good name one can think of?Is this man politically mature at all?How would the electorate view him after this?
Maybe one could ague that it was after all not a political meeting it was infact a head of state meeting the Farmers of the country and hearing their views which qualifies Waa as a citizen to air out his views at such a gathering for the president to hear him first hand but now praise singing the oponent for God's sake.

I cannot think what Omar or his leader meant by still being an opposition. What are they opposing?

Waa is out to play a game on both his party and the APRC. He is searching for his soul and don't know where it will land him. This is typical of Waa confusing the situation and meddling with his supporters brains.

He cleverly play with these kind of situations by not totally declaring his support but at the same time doing something to get the people talking.

As far as any we are concern Waa is irrelevant regardless of whether he joins Jammeh or not. I am sorry to learn that Mr. Joof still consider Waa a leader. I think Joof deserves a better leadership.

The breakup of NADD, by all indication, was not due to Waa's fury over any position; but rather Darboe's insistence on fulfilling a superstitious family claim to "mansaship". Kayjatta

This is an outrageous misinformation. Darboe did not insist on fulfilling any superstitious family ambition. His comment about his Great grandfather’s prophecy was merely meant to rebuke a contrary APRC propaganda claim propelled by the likes of Buba Baldeh that his great grand father had prophessed that his descendants won’t be 'mansas'. Darboe firstly responded in 2001, barely before the presidential election, and dismissed the claim as nonsense. He then cited the record of his father who served as an Honorable member of parliament for many years and who according to Darboe, always begin his campaign in their ancestral home village of Dobo. His referral to his Grandpa’s prophecy in 2006 was just an extension of his dismissal of this APRC bogus claim. This was deemed necessary at the time because it was realized that some people in certain rural villages might be moved by the APRC claim due to the great grandpa’s widely known spiritual opposition to tyrannical rulers of his time. All what Darboe's comment was designed to achieve was to ruthlessly knock-off this APRC's bogus propaganda but it had been twisted by disingenuous Ayatollah Sallah surrogates like Yero Jallow [Dalton] under the guise of journalism as part of their cyber campaign to aid Halifa Sallah inflict damage on Darboe’s candidacy. That was their political strategy in the 2006 presidential election but then they lost their bearings and consequently failed, awfully.

Darboe’s claim on the NADD flagbearership was only representative of the wishes and aspirations of his party, the United Democratic Party, and was based on perfect legitimate reasons underpinned by fundamental democratic principles observed all around the world. Certain players within NADD and megalomaniac American based intellectuals like Dr. Abdoulie Saine had tried to make people accept that these well cherished and universal democratic principles cannot suffice in the Gambia because we are/ our political system is peculiar. UDP knew that was only a nonsensical political façade designed to cover-up a grotesque and sinful anti-Darboe conspiracy from within the organization. It was code named 'All but Darboe' [ABD]. This episode then reached a stalemate point where it was accepted that no progress would be attained in the prevailing climate. A decision was then made that led to a UDP pull-out and it has ever since been rejoiced and commended as sound and legitimate by the general membership of the party. It was clearly a sound move that will never earn an iota of regret of any sort and shall never be reneged on.

Meanwhile, I would be grateful to everyone if we can agree not to talk about Juwara’s defection. The guy is a spent horse. Giving extensive coverage and debate about him will only serve to glorify his despicable character and maverick standing in Gambian politics.

Thanks

What a silly statement! I went to High School in about the mid 1990s and finished in the late 90s but I have always being dismissive of them and all what they stand for. As far as I am concern, all what they are renowned for is spinning and gross deception. They are too elitist and out of touch.

I am not a by-product of PDOIS. I have never been taught by them or attended any of their civic fora. I am also not a subscriber to their media outlet. I am a by-product of my parent's hard earned investment and scarifies. That is what I am. The only other people who can claim credit for my achievements are my uncle who housed and fed me for my entire High School duration, and the good teachers who taught me well and helped mould me to be what I am today.

Anyway, I hope somebody will produce imperial evidence to support this outlandish claim because if this claim is true, I believe their political following would have been greater than the decimal 3% they currently stand at. I think this statement is a manifestation of fanaticism gone too mad. I hope that the author will endeavour to explicitly exclude me from this delusional mischaracterisation sooner rather than later.

Thanks

Mening Mening Tafal Tafal To-nyaa lea beaa labang naa. I am not a supporter of any party but what I would like to point out is this:

There cannot be a meaningful united opposition without the blessing of the UDP. Gambians have to accept this and plan to work with the main opposition party. If what Gambians aspire is a united opposition, UDP has to be at the forefront. It is unreasonable to sideline UDP especially Darboe.

If the ABD claim is true then the ABD advocates should be man enough to come out and state their reasons. If these reasons are credible then Darboe has to be convinced to give his blessings to the democratically elected nominee. The leadership issue/problem has to be addressed first and foremost before any call for a union.
It is time for straight talk, and honesty.

The truth of the matter is that Darboe and UDP signed the NADD memo with full understanding that the agreement in the memo did not give priority to any individual party based on size or whatsoever. Darboe is a lawyer, he understands this.
Therefore, to turn around and walk away from his obligations at the last minute when he was not selected as the flagbearer is dishonest.
He should have stated his intentions upfront, at the beginning of the formation of NADD, that he wants to be the flagbearer since his party is the largest one. Then that would be taken into consideration; but he didn't do that, did he?

Although it is correct to say that the MOU did not give priority to any party on the basis of any criteria, it was nevertheless not necessary for the UDP or Mr. Darboe to make any such demand in order to be able to capture the flagbearership. In addition to the requirement that the flagbearer must be chosen by unanimity, the MOU provided that the candidate must be sellable [electable]. This requirement was a bargain chip for the UDP and far more favored them than any other party or candidate. Statistically, Mr. Darboe has proven to be more sellable than any of the other contenders. This was further buttressed by the 2006 presidential election result which showed Darboe outvoting his NADD opponent by a margin ratio of 5:1. So, they [UDP] still have the same leverage to claim legitimacy on the flagbearership as if the argument was; ‘We are the largest party and so we deserve to lead'. It all comes to the same thing; They have the most electable candidate, period.

I think the people who breached their obligation under the MOU are those who labored well on their ABD conspiracy theory to stifle this sacred provision of the MOU and those who blatantly flouted NADD’s code of conduct on confidentiality. Some even went as far as prematurely declaring OJ as the winner even though he has not acquired the unanimous endorsement that the MOU stipulates and his electibility not examined. In the process, they launched a grotesque and vicious vilification and smearing campaign, a kitchen and Shink strategy, against Mr. Darboe as if he was not part of the same team as them.

Even when the UDP was mobilizing their nationwide structures in preparation for a possible primary election, their adversaries within NADD were still sabotaging their efforts. While Halifa was busy putting up a selection committee to thwart the possibility of a primary which he knew Darboe would win with ease, he was at the same time dispatching his lieutenants in the field to openly campaign against the idea of a primary. This team was headed by Suwaibou Touray. One of their petitions was even posted here. What is more dishonest than that especially given that primary election is one of the sacred provisions enshrined in the MOU? Those behind the ABD Conspiracy project have implored every effort and strategy in a rather overt fashion to ensure that the true spirit of the MOU does not take its course. Halifa Sallah's camp has also done the same thing although in a covert manner, and is complacent in the ABD project. Therefore, to say that Darboe should have stated his intentions at the very beginning is absurd and disingenuous. On the contrary, that should have been said of those behind the ABD agenda and those who said that supporting a candidate of another party amounts to helping somebody to become a elite [Ayatollah Sallah’s position]. They should have made their intentions known ab initio. If they had done that, UDP would not have joined NADD.

Anyway, please be reminded that at the time of Mr. Darboe’s resignation, nobody was selected as NADD’s flagbearer. The selection process was not completed at the time and there was no front runner. The process was in limbo.

Thanks.

There are very serious issues in the opposition camp, I hope and pray that the opposition gets its act straight well before the next election. If the opposition camp keeps these alleged behaviors there will be very little hope for democracy in the Gambia. What happened in 2005 is just inconceivable.
