Reports from local papers in Banjul have it that Waa has finally swallowed his pride and memories of torture and annouced his plans to join the Jammeh regime.
As reported by the point newspaper Waa finally accepted what his critics long saw as an inevitable move from the Niamina Mbarodi turned Chicken. See story below:
http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/2008/5/13/waa-juwara-finally-announces-readiness-to-join-aprc
This news is probably the best that could have happened to the opposition camps in the Gambia. More on this topic .....

I have been called all sorts of names here because of my criticisms and words of caution against juwara. Today, at last I am vindicated and I have no doubt that many more vindications will fall my way in the near future.
In any case, I would like to say that Juwara's defection is worth rejoicing as it is a blessing in disguise. It now means that his maligned political character and Walter Mitty behaviour can be tackled more effectively and with ease without fear of anyone being seen as attacking a fellow opposition figure. Regrettably, the beast is still using his past connection with the UDP to carve a good political credential for himself and with the ultimate aim of securing a top job. He is taking pride in being a one time propaganda Secretary for the party. I suppose it is only because UDP is gold in Gambian politics.
Long live the Gambia.

DBaldeh, this should not be a surprise to any one who followed Gambian politics. Although it does not help to cry over spilt milk, I believe he was the divisive factor that led to the break up of the coalition NADD. In my opinion, his defection should be a rejoicing for the Gambian opposition.

| Interesting but it just made me laughed but not the least surprised, As far as I'm concern this is the end of Waa juwara. As I posted ealier that him joining APRC it a massage to jammeh that indeed all what he has been strugling is false all he need is his personal interest in power, then Jammeh from now on has the chance of hiting back harder on him, knowimg that he is nothing but a mere hypocrite. Then Who will he turn back to,Certainly not the oppostions and Gambian people will loose all the respect they got for him, that will sadly be his end.Lets wait and see. |

An extension of this issue will in better ways bolster Juwara's political profile much further. When you weigh up all the factors, you are likely to recognise the hidden desire in many Gambian politicians and Waa Juwara is no lesser brand of opportunity seeking Big Brother Big Mouth. It has always been people who often bestow the trust that Gambian politicians are sincere. There may be a few, but in their majority politicians are not for people. They are for themselves.
When asked why he indulged in mass killings, Hilter's daring response was that humans have the natural instinct to kill but only pretend they do not. Hitler would further argue that given the way out, humans will always prefer to manifest their true instinct. Juwara is fulfilling a long incubated political desire. Given the way out, there are many like him. If you doubt that, see what next. What remains is anyone's good guess.
Gambians need to know this and learn from it rather than labour over it. It is gone and gone, perhaps for good. So what to worry about? |

The toad-metamorphosis politics is a shame. It apparently has become clear of Waa’s political stance. Mandingkol koh, “nyii yaa moi uhmm, feng neh kah sunkang.” The odor has long since diffused in the air but he was doing ‘try-n-error’ to test the emotion of decent Gambians. A political sell-out is far more dangerous, far more evil-spirited, and far greedier than a dictator.
http://gainako.com/fejango/Issue~262-2008/
quote: According to Kebba Dibba, Mr. Lamin Waa Juwara also addressed a large gathering at Katamina in Niamina District where a water project has been initiated and praised president Jammeh that no one should call Jammeh a dictator because he has submitted himself to the Gambian people; that he Juwara has joined Jammeh for development. GRTS Kebba Dibba also said he has observed during the mass rally in Soma that one man who followed president Jammeh with ill intentions eventually fell down ostensibly because of Jammeh's supernatural powers. There is no doubt Waa's departure creates a great opportunity for the opposition. He was the cancer in the opposition and they under estimated his motives and trusted him.
I actually agree with my opponent nyarikang that he has been vindicated in this case atleast against all the nasty things Waa has been saying against Darboe.
It is also evident that Waa had an ax to grind against Darboe thus his role in the NADD formation.
It is also important to put Waa's situation into context. If anyone no matter how young you are has followed Gambian politics for a while you will notice that Waa was one of those politicians who never hesitated to cross carpet whenever it was convenient. He defected from the PPP and stood as an independent candidate in Niamina. Won the MP seat and only to defect back to the PPP again.
He has always been a political opportunist and always goes with the wind. Its not a shame for people like him when they have done this over and over.
His departure certainly marks his end just like S.M Dibba, Buba Baldeh L.K Jabang and the big Man Sir Dawda. Time is weeding out all the useless politicians.
Time to regroup and remake a new union.

Hey brothers;
Waa may have joined the ranks of his alledged toturers but for what reason.Only Waa knows. As far as politic in the Gambia was and even now is perceived, only politics of personal interests above national interest makes people to actively engage into politics. As far as I know, appart from the likes of Demba is ok 10/10 of EX-PPP,Sedia jatta of PDOIS,Halifa Sallah of PDOIS,and maybe Sussan Wafa-Ogu ex Minister of APRC plus very very few others I didn't name out of many 100s of thousands of civil servants. Can anyone name me any genuine Gambian who puts national interest before personal interest? I am in no way trying to defend the devil(Juwara) here but come-on lets be honest here,Gambia today is changed beyond recognisation politically. We have now entered into a new era of politics where you can only shine when you bow and kneel before the MIGHTY-ONE. Juwara has indeed swallowed his pride and showed his true self as a hypo.,fool, lyer,(if one listens to Juwara of yesterday and now hear him utter these words, then Gambians should not laugh but outcast him).
This is the true Lamin Waa Juwara.
People did not know why he Joined the UDP in the first place. It was never because he supports Ousainu Darboe or UDP, NO NO he intends to check and balance his political popularity in other to counter Ousainu's leadership and either rise to become the main opposition leader or if that is impossible as he earlier realised try to be his vice president or even become UDP PARTY Sectretary General or assistant. When all this failed, Juwara accepted the low post of propagander Secretary with hidden agenda to either distroy or create disunity within the party. Thus that created his socalled anger with Ousainu for accepting the then presidential election thereby calling Ousainu to step down as Party Leader. When he failed in that too, he then formed his NDAM party a party in but only name. The Party was formed at his home in Brikama and got endorsement largely from his closest friends and supporters from Niamina Dankunku district.Ndam was never a party but a counter action group formed to further Juwara's political ambitions.
When a proposed coalition was being formed,Juwara sees himself as a force to recond with but his only obstacle was UDP and Ousainu. That was why he sided with the likes of OJ to oust UDP off its majority power to have their leader lead the coalition.
Halipha,s rise to lead the break away was the creation of WAA and not anybody for he knew that was the only way he can succeed in his plans. Can't we see how he dumped them when they all failed?
Now as there is no other way for him to continue his party as there was no party, his only chance of having his voice heard is by turning to his alledged turturers so that he can still have a large gartherin g to listen to him because he can't let himself go on campaigning under NDAM thus letting people realise to what extent his party's popularity is in the Gambia.Juwara would today happily break away from APRC if all opposition party chose him as their presidential candidate.I can bet on that. The man would never support Jammeh whole heartedly never. He only turned to trash to safe his greedy face.
Enough of Juwara
Now lets turn to how many selfish, oppotunist Gambians are like Jawara?
The answer is:
There are many many thousands of them.
Let me give you few clasical examples:
for PPP Fatoumata J.ceesay (former PPP youth leader) Nyimasata S Bojang (Former ppp parliamentarian) Fansung Nafa Lamin Saho (Former PPP minister) Lamin kiti Jabang (former PPP minister and UDP supporter) Amulai Janneh (former PPP minister and UDP supporter) Buba M Badeh (former PPP minister) Sambujang Jange (former PPP area leader) and all the then chiefs.
NCP Sheriff Dibba (former party leader of now dead ncp) Foday Mkalo (Former parliamentarial for NCP) Majanko Samusa (Former parliamentarial for NCP and UDP supporter) Sainey Jateh (Former parliamentry canditate for ncP) J. colley Faye (Former parliamentry canditate for ncP)
UDP Moro Jawla (former chief who ran on an opposition ticket as his opponent Kebba F.Comma was backed by APRC)
NRP Mam Mbangik Njie (former NRP campaign manager)
All these and many opportunists like them had many followers who don't belong anywhere but only loyal to them and would gladly follow them to distroy the Gambia if they so lead. And many others who switched parties for greener pastures.
Now can anyone truthfully tell me if many like the above names did really joined the APRC for purely national interest other than parsonal interests?
In no way am I trying to defend the devil Juwara, but rather just trying to shout that there are thousands like him.So despite what he had suffered in the hands of those he now joined, I only believed he acted because greedy/selfish he really is like many,he was desparate to join in squandering.
I will leave the debate open until further when I read other comments. |

| Janyanfara you have said it all, these are the very private elements posing the most serious risk to politcal development of the Gambia. The other group you fail to mention is the various Greedy and Needy group leaders(Yai Compins) they are all trash in gambian politics and there presence is a serious political menace to misguide the electorates just for their personal benefits. To me they deserve to face the firing squard. What is the role of a yai compin to an extend they are provided with a brand new pick up 4x4 and a hevy cheque, the source of all these is never devoiced from our pulic fund. |

You are right. The magic water is working. Waa's decison should be taken in the context of his socialist and communist background, having studied and rose to become i belive the Secretary General of the african students union in Bulgaria or some eastern block country. Trust is certainly not part of his philosophy. After all, was it not Karl Max who advised in his most famous saying " Doubt everything".
Personally, i respect his right to associate or not to associate. That is a constitutional right accorded to all citizens. Therefore, i will not condemn him but i believe he owes his political supportes the reason for swtching if it indeed it is true. You cannot run with the hares and hunt with the hounds.

| The question is would Yahya trust Waa with any great responsibility? His record of about turns is quite impressive, They say in mandinka ' Jatto bukka curfu' that did not hold true for him and i wonder how he got the title Mbarodi in the first instance. |

It is evident that Waa has long been fishing for opportunities which unfortunately are always badly calculated on his side.
There is a very important historic perspective to this switching from one party to the other. During the PPP it used to be called cross-carpeting and it was the order of the day during the Jawara regime. There was no shame to it.
However, what makes this even less serious is Jawara's return to embrace Jammeh and his Junta after he was chased out of office in humility. When many of us cried foul for Jawara's return, we were thinking about the moral precedence this would have on other politicians. If Jawara can swallow his pride, abandon his family only to return to a regime that despise him so much, then what on earth can prevent any other opportunistic polician from doing the same?
See majority Gambians don't know about Pre- Jawara days. What we know is how politics transpired largly during PPP days and post PPP days. So there is little we know and can reference outside of the PPP. Unfortunately, the PPP democratic and political style was the most inferior of any decent political system we have known.
So evidently we are still living the post trauma of a half baked so called democracy and honest politicians who jaminate from the PPP doctrine.
For Juwara, if it is not embarrassing to Jawara the Ex. PRESIDENT, why would it be embarrassing to him or other pundits? They can always point to Jawara as an example and we are living it.

Like my great teacher Kondorong said, it is Waa's inalienable right to political association and dis-association. Every body should respect that. There is certainly no doubt that Waa is a great Gambian who sacrifised a lot (including his freedom and limb)for the betterment of the country. It is a sharp contrast that when Waa was being detained and tortured in the cells of the NIA, Darboe was running into the Senegalese embassy for his own protection. When Waa was openly challenging the military government, many others were quietly minding their own business to avoid the kind of fate that befell him. I would personally like to understand Waa's recent move in the light most favorable to him. I think he deserve that. How would I like to understand Mbarodi's apparent cross-carpeting (as reported)? I would like to understand it in the context of the broad socio-political environment in the Gambia, both presently and in the past. The history of the performance of opposition political parties in the Gambia is at best dissastrous. During the Jawara era, almost all the opposition parties (NCP,GPP,GDP, etc), except PDOIS, were break-aways of the PPP, and they were never able to carve out any clear-cut policy alternative to the PPP. In short they remained satellites of the PPP, unable to make any inroads either in the government or in the mainstream society. Jammeh's take-over in 1994 has not changed anything in terms of the rules of the game of politics in the Gambia. It is the same paternalistic, patronizing game at play. Jammeh has no doubt been close (a guard) to Jawara and the PPP machine, and it appears that he has learned somewhat from the game. Consequently, the APRC has become the political empire; all other parties are merely reduced to satellite status. Like the moon around the earth. In an atmosphere like this, anyone politician, yai Compin, civil servant, or virtually anyone who wants to matter, to be counted, or simply to survive, has very little choice but to join ranks with the Leviathan. The prospect of an opposition coalision in the form of NADD in the run-up to the last presidential election offered some hope of turning things around. However, the collapse of NADD shortly before the elections indicates how troubled the Gambian opposition fundamentally is. Many people, both in the Gambia and abroad were shocked, and disillsioned by the breakup of NADD. The breakup of NADD has changed all of us; no one is left the same... Mbarodi's gravitaion towards Jammeh and APRC, first by throwing his support behind an APRC Niamina candidate who was allegedly a protege of his, then accepting an Area Council position offered by Jammeh, and lately his reported defection on the campaign trail, must be understood in this context. Some times people's desire to serve the country looms far too larger than anything. I do not think Mbarodi was such an arrogant, self-serving political ideologue, who insists on his, and only his, ascension to power at all cost. The breakup of NADD, by all indication, was not due to Waa's fury over any position; but rather Darboe's insistence on fulfilling a superstitious family claim to "mansaship". This is not to say that Mbarodi has made a good choice here. I think, like many before him, Jammeh will use him and dump him sooner or later. While I personally wish him all the best, i think it might benefit him a lot if he stand a safe distance from Jammeh and the APRC while working with them. His guiding light should be to serve the Gambian people and not their oppressor. Thank you. |
