"what should gambia do to entice its diasporans back to the Motherland or to persuade them not to leave in the first place?"
some ideas for answers from people i have spoken to, need your input , too.
1) improve job availability for skilled people
2) head hunt graduates while still abroad
3)invest in its own industries to create more jobs
4)nothing, things are fine
5)restore a realistic dalasi value to help the economy
6)tighten up leaving criteria
7)open more colleges in gambia
8) create more vocational training courses
9)have army conscription - not my idea!
10)offer reduced prices for housing for indigenous people
11) build more affordable housing
12) prevent foreigners from buying land
13)have a minimum number of locals that have to be employerd in local businesses.
14)have successful returnees tour the schools
ideas please.

what if gambia wants them to leave or not to come back? It is a good revenue considering foreign money. Population grows fast, typical third world country, so it is good gambians go abroad and send some cash, goods.

Lurker, good to catch you up here again. Good list to start with, but I think I have a broader list that will allow the entrepreneurial creativity of Gambians to determine their own destiny. The Gambian mind is so creative and intellectual that you only need to lay the ground work and they will flourish. Here is the list;
1. Change the political landscape and allow free multi party democracy for the hard working people to be able to change their leadership when they fail to govern effectively.
2. Allow freedom of expression and open the government to the media so citizens can hold them accountable.
3. Stamp out every iota of corruption in the government starting from the President down to the office cleaner.
4. Hold elected officials accountable for every public funds and services geared towards development of the public sector
5. Create an independent judiciary free from government interference which will enforce the rule of law and restore respect for human and peoples' rights.
6. Encourage private investment and respect the right to property ownership which leads to free market economy.
7. Invest heavily in education and health care with emphasis on higher education and technical skills.
8. Allow foreign investment and create a level playing field with accountability.
9. Foster international relations by respecting international human rights charters and the rule of law.
10. Discipline Discipline Discipline and educate the army to stay out of politics and prevent another Junta ever from needing to overthrow an elected government.
This I think will create an atmosphere where Gambians can be creative and control their own destiny. The nation is small but the people are smarter like any other in the world. Could you believe Gambians are a people who have been kept dark from exposure to the international scene by not having access to National Television, decent National radio, or decent education and yet still we find ourselves competing among the best in the world. What do you think is responsible for that? |

| I agree with dbaldeh - in regards to the political issues. I strongly believe that once you get the political climate right, then the economics side raised by Lurker can follow. If you get the economics side right but the same political problems still persists, it only fuels the problem of corruption etc, taking us back to square one. |
