Is it permitted in our constitution for a woman president to be elected? Any comments?

Women are eligible and have the chance 100%. However politics is a dangerous game in Africa and particularly Gambia and women have limited chances of mobilising the populace. So far its very rare to single out an independent, dynamic and mature political party under a woman leadership in the Gambia. There are no encouragements and the atmosphere is not ideal for them. Our sisters and mothers are of very good characters and morale to participate in a highly corrupt political climate, which goes with opportunism, intimidation and terror. An indication of under-development;what a sad situation? |

I think we can have a woman president. Thye need to come forward and stop being used as "yai compins" and take more serious roles in politics.
Fatoumata Jahumpa would have made a good candidate if not for her inability to see the other side of the story. She is a fire brand but she would not make a good leader because she is not sympathetic to the feelings of people who share a diffrent approach to our problems.
She has to learn to me modest and inclusive. |

Off course we can have a woman president. In fact there is a new reality that puts women in the strongest possible position to lead a nation like the Gambia. The role that women occupy in society is extremely crucial. They have a bigger stake emmotionally and psychologically to any political an social crisis in any society. They look deeper into the consequences of crisis than men. They think more about losing a child and personal property more than men. In other words women are more emotionally vulnerable than many egoistic men like us.
The recent campaign styles of the Liberian President Johnson, and the chilian woman president realed a lot about what woman can do to address the needs of society. They can relate to any situation contrary to our traditional belief. Women are involved in every sector of society. They touch greatly on every part of our lives.
Women are softer, more appealing and more complete. This is not a sexist position, but a reality from my experience as a husband, a father, and social counterpart. In addition, women are more likely to work away from something that don't work than us men. We are emotionally stronger, but socially weaker and bankrupt. We want to proof ourselves in everything we do, and our egos hardly allow us to admit defeat and learn from our mistakes. The more women leaders we have the more stable this world will become. It is a reality check.

Sankofa, I do not support any attempt by the moderator of the forum to sensor opinion becasue sensorship defeats the very principle of freedom of speech, however in a domocratic society informed debate is not essential but fundamental. You analysis at best lacks any facts and at worse makes no sense what so ever to me. |

Posted - 30 Mar 2006 : 14:15:41 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I agree with you somita(E=nyau) But don't be surprised with sankofa or angry with him,for in my view, he is sensuring people's opinion on his leader and he will alwys try to give what some of us think of his great leader. We bore no gruges against his leader for he leads us all.We only want to help him lead us in the right direction for our common good as a nation.
This was enshrined in our world's best NATIONAL ANTHEM....
FOR THE GAMBIA OUR HOMELAND, LET US TRY AND WORK AND PRAY, THAT ALL MAY LIVE IN UNITY, FREEDOM AND PEACE EACH DAY, LET JUSTICE GUIDE OUR ACTIONS TOWARDS THE COMMON GOOD AND JOIN OUR DIVERSE PEOPLE TO PROOF MAN'S BROTHERHOOD, WE PLEDGE OUR FIRM ALLEGIANCE OUR PROMISE WE RENEW, KEEP US GREAT GOD OF NATIONS TO THE GAMBIA EVER TRUE
This Anthem keeps the Gambia and will always guide against all obstacles towards peace, stability and progress.

I recall this topic to encourage our sisters to vee for higher political ambition and leadership roles as they may be the fortunate ones to radicalise and inspire more progress under first Gambian lady President. I would not hesitate to observe on this forum, the likes of Salimina have more potentials, political awareness, balanced or rational ideals to take the lead and face the challenges. Godd luck! |

That's a good encouragement to start the sensitisation process and let's start identifying potentials now. No crude, veteran and ooportunistic politicians in the likes of Nymasata Bojang and Fatoumata Jahumpa please. Those highly educated professional with good career can continue doing woderful things with their noble professions with high sense of integrity and professinalism. Political awareness does not necessary meant to be well read or highly educated rather good leadership qualities, maturity and well balanced to make rational decisions, promote democracy, human rights and provide food, shelter, good amenities, security and other basic things of life. Good luck sisters, get your self involve as we support you 100% for our beloved motherland to be led by a dynamic lady. Can anyone come forward please or introduced to us through Bantaba? |

Who is the role model amongst our current women within the government. Could the VP or FJC. Is their precedence any good? |
