I try to look for the good in people. (A quaker philosophy). I am open and honest. Kind and caring. Some people take advantage of that, or try to. But I can be business like and professional too. I am NOT a walk over!
I am still an idealist. Life hasn't knocked that out of me. Sometimes in Gambia my idealism is severely tested, but it comes back.
The recipe for a successful marriage is easy: find someone you love, respect them, care for them, listen to them and be faithful to them. It takes two people believing the same for this to work.
i guess you wish you implement some of those quaker philosophy.but then people make mistakes .don't they? oh also the verses you wrote about marriage ,they are good only if one act upon them. |

Toubab1020, my apologies for the delay to your response. No doubt there are those exceptions to the rule where couples have met each other over the interenet and fell in love and lived happily ever after I think they are in a minute minority. Nothing beats courtship getting to know each other in person then seeing where you go from there. letter writing and phone calls give little comfort compared to being physically with each other day by day and going through the different challenges and opportunities that life presents us with.
The stereotype of the passive Gambian woman and the macho Gambian man is a myth here. It seemed that MB was played by his New Bride for a visa to the UK, and her and MB's friend found that they had more in common than with him. Yes he was betrayed. However when he reflects on the sham he can probably start to see that there were warning signs along the way which he failed to acknowledge about his marriage and his friendship.
One is only a doormat if you lay down and let someone else work over you. MB faced the situation and hopefully now he can get some closure to it.
Stereotyping as victims is quite silly because there are also men who have experienced their partners infidelity. But maybe women are more vocally expressive? what say you?
peace

Thanks for that input sister, I had to go back myself and refresh on this, all my comment was to bring out that to refer to ones wife as "it" does show a certain discourtsy to a fellow being, especially one who you want to share your life with and hopefully be the mother of your children, but maybe if all you want is a servant and machine there being no love there,in the past that may have been the case but women have now become much more integrated and Gambia seem sto be promoting women power at this time.

I think Santafara made a grammatical mistake when he wrote "it" instead of "them" wives. Anyway I am sure Santafara would agree to refer to women as objects is wrong? Would you Santafara???

Santafara you say 'I have a wife and certainly loved(sic - past tense!) her'. And what about the here and now? Only hope she doesn't read your text santa - she might get a little paranoid. |
