Kon, am not convince either on the issue of Shariah. On balance shariah will bring more hardship on our people than what we have today. Majority of our people are half muslims if there is anything like that. Today they are attending Juma (Friday) prayers, the next day they are dancing and gossiping on others fortunes.

I endorse what Jack said, that democracy is fairly new even in the west. I happen to believe that the basic foundation of a democratic society is freedom. Once we are free, we can use the universal democratic principles that will work for our people. We don't have to have the same system in the US or UK. We can tailor it towards our own situation and stage of affairs. This is why I happen to believe in Social Democracy (NOT SOCIALISM)base on free market economy. This model would seems to fit us better given our social nature... What say you???

Is is not a colonial christian legacy? Because in the first book of the Bible (genesis), it was written that God in creating the world , took six days, monday to saturday and he rested on the seventh day(sunday).

Kondorong, you seem to always miss the point. I am not asking to make Friday a day of rest. If you look carefully at what i have written, i said the state is forcing the people. Carpenters, mechanics, shops and private businesses operate routinely everyday and thus dont have days of rest.

However, in Gambia, the state is imposing on the people to rest on saturday and sunday. Now if we look at the origin of these so called holy days we know that the jews and christians rest on them and yet our constitution claims to the secularity of our nation. How about nobody get a day of rest and we all earn our living. In other words, when it comes to accomodate muslims, all of a sudden we hide behind the hypocricy of secularism.

It is ironical tha some of us still believe in the so calle dfree market system that was built on stolen resources and on the backs our our forefathers in the form of slaves.

At least with Shariah, we know that noone is above the law in terms of writing it. I will rather submit to the laws of Allah if giving the choice than on one that samba, pateh and fatou wrote and present to me to follow blindly.

Colonialism has left such an indelible mark on our society that we cant seem to reason well.

"...Verily, in the remembrance of Allâh do hearts find rest..." Sura Al-Rad (Chapter 13, Verse 28)

...Gambian by birth, Muslim by the grace of Allah...

That is not true. No one is forced to work every day. These people are private businesses and as such choose to work every day. For those salaried, Saturday and Sunday is a holiday.

No one is forced to work every day. There are some private businesses in the gambia who either dont work on some days or if they do, they open late. Thats is an individual choice. There are schools that dont operate on Fridays but classes are open on Sunday like Nusrat High School and Tahir High School.

If any one and that includes you decides to not open their private business on Fridays, thats most welcomed. Whats more important is to pay your taxes for as long as your Business License is in good standing.

In the UK, it was illegal for some businesses to operate on Sundays. Thats what led to what is called Sunday Market which operates in a big park like environment and generally dont provide receipts for sales.

Konds, you can't beat this one. Despite all your rumblings you did not answer the question, why are saturday and sunday chosen? I personally believe that it has to do wit our colonial heritage, which had religious connotations. LETS CALL A SPADE A SPADE

Brother,
My suggestion to you is to go to the Gambia and propagate your idea.
It is left to the Gambians to accept or not. I know for sure that people will say no. The type Islam in the Gambia cannot at all have Sharia as the country's laws. Then there will be a lot of cutting of hands and stoning to death those who commit funacation. These are problems that happen everyday in the Gambia.
As I left people to belive in the teachings of Islam, today it is quite different. People disregard gods laws and do what suits them.
Dont you agree? If you disagree, go to Gambia and make observations of the types of crimes committed there.
I still mentain that honest and dedicated people can rule Gambia without problems.

You are right Madiba

Saturday and Sunday are holidays for two reason.

Saturday is a holiday for Judaism and Sunday as you said was when the Lord rested after creating the earth. So each religion took a day. Rememeber Christianity has its roots in Judaism. Infact in earlier times, one has to covert to Judaism before you could be a Christian. Earlier teachings did not welcome the gentiles.

The Sabbath is in recognition of the favor of God to His people in Egypt when death was brought upon the oppressors during the night and when the Pharoahs son died in the process before letting the Isralites to go but only to attack them enroute which led to their drowning in the Red Sea. You will find this EXODUS in the Bible and Bob Marley sang a song about; "Exedous, movement of Jah People"

Friday being the Holiest day in Islam, is also a holiday in some muslim countries. Colonialism disgusise itself behind religion. This is indicated in the speech of one East African President when he said:

"When the whiteman came, they came with the Bible and asked us to pray with our eyes closed; when we opened our eyes, we had the Bible and they had the land"I believe it was Kenyatta.
