Old Yundum Residents Complain of Odour Factory Relocates to Mandinari
By Fabakary B. Ceesay on 19-10-10

Readers would recall that in late August 2010, some residents and compound owners from old Yundum Village visited the Foroyaa office to complain about environmental pollution caused by the smoke and pungent odour coming from a Chinese owned factory situated in the village.
After some months of raising concern, Foroyaa has been informed that the Chinese owned factory, which residents of Old Yundum have exposed as a pollutant is now in the process of relocating to its new site in Mandinari in the Kombo North District of Western Region.

Some residents of Old Yundum, where this factory has been operating, have told this reporter that the workers of the factory are presently busy dismantling the structures and transferring things to the new site.
When this reporter visited the factory in Old Yundum on Wednesday, 13th October, he could confirm the stoppage of operations as some of the machines and equipment were found dismantled and heaped on the ground. The Gambian workers he met there informed him that the equipment piled together is waiting to be transported to the new site where the work of fixing structures and machines by the Chinese personnel is currently taking place.
This reporter also contacted one of the Chinese workers, called Peter, by phone, and he confirmed their relocation from Old Yundum to Mandinari.

Editor’s Note
It is hoped that the owners of the factory have learned their lessons and are in a position to work with the Environmental Agency to do an impact assessment of their operations before it commences. We will conduct interviews with management to find out whether the right lessons have been drawn

Hope they will learn their lesson,I think that although there is no indication that "some Gambian Ministry" has had a big hand in making this happen,as usual with politics you have to tread softly,if this is the case then Gambian politics have developed and learned to play the game which is politics.Good.
