I feel that this type of conduct is often associated with Chinese enterprises, make it cheap and sell it,don't worry about the environment or the health of the workers or locals:

Old Yundum Residents Lament Foul Odour from nearby Factory Are the Chinese Manufacturers Ready to Relocate? By Fabakary B. Ceesay on 30-08-10
By Fabakary B. Ceesay and Mamadou Dem Some residents and compound owners from Old Yundum have visited the Foroyaa offices to express their concerns for their health. According to them pollution being caused by a Chinese factory situated in their village is hazardous to their health. The concerned residents explained that the factory has been polluting their environment for almost a year now. The eldest son of the village Alkalo, Mr. Mamudou Faye, said since the establishment of the factory their environment has been polluted by an unbearable odour that he described as “worst than a bad egg”. He said they have made several unsuccessful efforts to find redress regarding the hazardous fumes emitted by the factory but that the factory still continues to pollute their environment on a daily basis and put their health at risk. Mr. Mamudou Drammeh, Malick Sanyang and Lamin Keita, all compound owners in the area, said the unbearable odour from the factory is life threatening and torturous. They explained that the odour affects those who are outside or inside their houses. One of them likened the pollution from the factory to the pouring of toxic waste on land or in the sea. The compound heads called on the concerned authorities to take immediate action to save them from contracting heart and lung diseases from the pungent smoke from the factory. Mrs. Ndey Manneh, a housewife, also lamented the odour and explained that they use a lot of incense, locally called ‘Churai’, to ward off the odour but with little effect. She added that it is even difficult for them to eat when the factory starts emitting its thick smoke which lingers in the atmosphere after long hours into the evening. She also called on the health authorities to intervene immediately to arrest the situation and protect their health. A shopkeeper said he could not do his business when the pollution starts. He said he could not understand what type of smoke is coming from the factory but, according to him, it is the worst odour he has ever been exposed to. One of the women said the odour makes her nauseate and she vomits often as a result. Ya Fatou Jallow from the compound of the Senghores’ (Senghore Kunda) complained that the health of her family is in danger because of the pollution as they are now deprived of the right to breathe fresh air during the day and at night. She explained that even their curtains, blinds and bed sheets get stained because of the black smoke. The manager at the FIFA – Goal Project and the headquarters of the Gambia National Technical Training Centre (school of excellence), Mr. Terema Dahaba, said he and his staff stay for only eight hours in the area during the working week, but added that the pollution is unbearable as lamented by others. Alagie Bah, a Guest House operator, said the smoke is seriously affecting their business and are losing customers as most of their guests have abandoned the place. He added that the shoot from the smoke has even affected their swimming pool. These reporters have gone to the factory and the NEA. A new site has been visited which is said to have been identified for the relocation the Company. Foroyaa is waiting for the proprietor to come back from his travels in order to put the concerns of the villagers to him and confirm his plans to provide redress.

Hi 2bab,
I read the thread...just like your headline, "A Strong Smell." I added: wow, what a smell! There is a slaughter house in my city here, and the place smells equally as bad, but it is isolated far into the bushes. I can only imagine why that is. That is good planning. It will be a good to relocate that factory whatever it is to another place.
Happy Ramadan 2bab..& thanks for sharing.
Kind regards, yj |

It would seem that there are poison toxins from this site. This is not the first or the last from these Chinese institutions. What the hell is the Gambian government doing to stop this or redress it? People have been known to develop cancers and all kinds of illnesses from these Chinese factories. Two things scream out danger to the local population having read this article: 1. rotten eggs 2. the woman who feels nauseous
I would like to know what the government doing to protect these people.

Perhaps the profits out weigh the problems from the governments point of view. Local people will have to stand up and be counted.. |

If it smells to rotten eggs its almost certain H2S (hydrogen sulfide) which is a toxic gas, even in low concentrations. You can only smell the gas in low concentrations. If the concentration is higher (more than 100 ppm) you can't smell it anymore as your smell is paralysed, which makes the gas even more dangerous. Irritation of eyes, headache and in high concentrations pulmonary embolism are the results of H2S.
NEA should investigate whats the source of this smell as Chinese dont give a damn about the environment and the health of the people working for them. Only profits count.

If this bad odor is indeed hydrogen sulfide which is a toxic gas then this is a very serious matter. Yet you folks want to turn the topic into a joke. That is distasteful. |
