I disagree with both Gambia and Janyafara. First of all, let us see first the historically African relationship with the world. They are colonized by Europeans and basically Europe got everything including and Europe too had no concern about human rights. They pretend to have human rights, but it is ok completely. I mean Europeans and US invest in China and India with no regards to Human rights, UK invest in Saudi Arabia all the gulf countries and Africa too without Human Rights consideration why we bring this when China Invest. That is total hypocrisy to me.
China is not colonial country. It did not have colonization policy like Europe during history. The trade relationship with China is based on ‘consensus’. It is not up to China or anyone else to improve democracy and human rights in Africa. It is non of no one business other than Africans themselves.
quote:
There is no moral content to the investment.

What does it mean? Moral content? It is a trade. China needs natural resources and they force no one to do trade with them. They are helping Africans. Of course they don’t give anything free. They are interested in the natural resources. It is up to African to be smart enough. No one can blame China for it. It is unfair to them. China’s economic and trade relationship is much better than what Europeans offered to Africa at present and in the history.
China is the best news for developing nations. They are good model for success. And they are not expansionist. That is not China’s business to consider African’s human rights. African countries have total control over what is good or what is bad for them. If they are not smart about it, it is themselves to be blamed, not Chinese.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

I believe China's interest in Africa is largely motivated by trade (perhaps excavation is a better word ). China's developing industries have a huge need for energy and raw materials that are not adequately available within its borders.
I have said here before that there is rising concern among economists that China's energy consumption is not at par with its alleged economic growth. Perhaps China's new "Scramble for Africa" is motivated by the urgent need to fill this gap.
And African Presidents are ready to embrace the 'new explorers'. I am afraid, however, that all these will occur at enormous damage to the African environment...

It is amazing. Ok, you one would have had valid point when they complain about imperialists to expose Africa. Now, they even complain 'fair trade' China is proposing. There is no gun, no obligation, no occupation, no colonization, not threat, no nothing. These Chinese men (and women) are coming to Africa with the fair trade idea. It is up to Africans to do the trade or not. Africa needs 1. Capital 2. Technology (Know how) and they have 1. Natural resources. China has technology and Capital and they need natural resources. The trade relationship is based on consensus. It is unfair to blame Chinese. No one will worry about your human rights and environment. You must be smart and aware to worry about yourself.
