Folks,
No doubt, this is very uncommon...and a trend very shameful, indeed.
What will the poor do now? Even water is a problem. jammeh & his *****s needs to take a hike, and give the country back to Gambians. Period!

A bit of a difference here?
"They noted that if they are to purchase their requirement of water on a daily basis, it would certainly impact negatively on them. They argued that their daily need on water will cost D15 per day and which works out to D450 a month."
The man in charge of the standpipe said " Also talking to this paper, the man in charge of selling water at one of the standpipes, Momodou Jallow, told this reporter that 20 litres of water cost 50 bututs. He said he is stationed at that tap to ensure that only people pay are allowed to draw water from that source."
My maths isn't that good but the women say they use 600 litres a day ?
40 litres =D1 so 40X15 = 600 litres, Somebody must be very mistaken about the charges,in this world NOTHING IS FREE.

2bab,
I got your back for the maths.
What you stated is true....the maths is wrong as it appears. I fear though they are comparing...either Momodou is wrong, or the other source is exaggerating. Either way, what stands out....the problem is there. I just got a private e-mail from someone that Basse is also undergoing the same problem -buying water. quote:

I suggest that the reporter has been taken in by both the seller and the buyer,as is quite normal in The Gambia,he has accepted what he has been told the seller, who I suspect MAYBE charging MUCH more than 50Bt per 20 litres,50Bt which is probably the authorised amount he should be charging. The buyers do not want to be buyers of a comodity that was once FREE so they MAYBE exagerating.I have NO DOUBT that there is a problem. As usual its about MONEY.I agree with you.

| These water problems/shortages should be solved by the local government authorities with subsidies from the central Government. The communities are paying taxes and the tax money should be spent on services for them. |

Very true, in an ideal world this should happen, but in The Gambia it never does,Why ? here are a few reasons that I believe are to blame,
No money too much trouble, money being used for other purposes, lack of transparent accounting, personal greed, low wages, bad management, staff who have had little or no training to do their work nepotism etc,
will things change anytime soon,?..........No, can this state of affairs be resolved?........Only by attitudinal change in the thinking processes of the Gambian nation .......is that going to happen ? ........NO..........result things stay the same and Gambia limps from problem to problem.
I still love the Gambia and her people a lot, just remember the two approved Gambian sayings for tourists:
The Smiling Coast Gambia No problem It gives me no pleasure at all to write these facts, will they be the subject of constructive critism by other posters ?........ I doubt it.....will other posters bother to give their opinions and prove me wrong I doubt it........... will this topic and posting become a burning issue I doubt it.....will anything change in The Gambia anytime soon I doubt it.

This kind of water shortage and sale of water from public taps (pumps) happened in Brikama in the early 1990s during the Jawara era. It resulted in riots involving clashes with law enforcement. Those Brikama riots were later recounted as one of a series of events that shaped the mood and set the stage for the ouster of the Jawara regime... Water is too important to be rationed. |
