SERGEANT MENDY’S FAMILY EXPRESS SHOCK By Fabakary B. Ceesay
Sergeant Buba Mendy of The Gambia National Army has gone missing several weeks ago. His family members expressed surprise that he has not been seen for a long time. They said Mendy has not been working before the 21st of March 2006. A family source said Buba’s absence from work was due to an accident he had with a motorbike. He resumed work two weeks after the foiled coup and continued working up to Friday 14th April 2006 when his family last saw him. According to a source, the Sergeant has never been absent from home for weeks, but his long absence this time, is worrying. The family source added that a family member went to the Tourism Development Area military post to ask the soldiers about his where about. The source noted that upon arrival at the post, their family member asked a female soldier about Mendy’s where about, but the female soldier told her that Mendy was out, noting the soldier was quick to tell the family member not to bother to wait for him. The source noted that a senior army officer asked the family member whether they heard anything concerning Mendy, and when the family member replied in the negative, the officer then advised their family member to go home and relax. The source indicated that their family member tried several phone calls to talk to Mendy, but to no avail. The source expressed dismay over the failure of Mendy’s soldier friends for not visiting the family since Mendy went missing. “They had always visited us; some times with Mendy himself,” the source said. Sergeant Buba Mendy was said to have been enlisted in the Army in 1990. When this reporter went to the TDA Army Post to enquire about Sergeant Mendy from his colleagues, he was told that Sergeant Mendy was with them there but they cannot tell what actually happened to him and they don’t know why he is absent from work all this time: Foroyaa contacted the Army Public Relation Officer (PRO), Lt Lamin Gano, who said that he did not know anything concerning Sergeant Mendy and that he did not know him personally.

| I knew Buba.I don't wanna say anything that might cause him harm in jail. All I can say is that he was a very nice and kind person. I have known him my whole life. i call on every one to demand or appeal for his freedom. He came from the same place as Manlafi(alleged to have escaped). In jammehs government, that is enough to arrest him. There is another person from the same place missing. His family fear for his safety, and as a result, have not gone public. |

Like i said before, we have to be each other’s keeper and stop wrongs when we see it. If they come for me during the night and all of you keep quiet, they will come for all of you one by one during broad daylight.
Just because it has not happened to you is no reason to jubilate. What goes around comes around and this includes Buba who today needs help and his colleagues colluding in the disappearance.
This has happened before and we all kept quiet. Tomorrow, don’t be surprised; some of his colleagues at the TDA will also go missing. Then they will appreciate what it takes to stand and defend the defenseless.
WE ARE GUILTY OF THE SILENCE THAT HAS EMBOLDENED THE MILITARY TO PUNISH WITH IMPUNITY. WE HAVE BECOME A VERY SELFISH SOCIETY READY TO PREY ON EACH OTHER AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR OWN'S SUFFERINGS. WHERE IS JAMES KUJABI, LANDING SANNEH, BABA JOBE, ALMAMO, BARROW, KORO, DEDAY, SILLAH, SEDAT JOBE, FAFA MBYE, CHEYASSIN SECKA,LAI CONTEH, SADIBOU, DIBBA, AND COUNTLESS OTHERS. THEY ALL AIDED THE JUNTA AND TODAY HAVE BEEN AT THE WRONG END OF HUSTICE. THEY HELPED PUT A HUMAN FACE TO THE ATROCITIES TAKING PLACE IN THE GAMBIA FOR THEIR OWN SELFISH ENDS.
I happen to be at the ministry of Foreign affairs when sedat tendered his resignation. He was fuming and shouting at the top of his voice when they did not take his letter to Junkung and instead mobilised political figures to ask him to reconsider his decision. Here was an educated and seasoned diplomat who went to the United Nations defending Baba Jobe of all people in his UN indictment for the trafficking of blood diamonds in Sierra lone. What was he thinking? I have found it hard to find a trustworthy educated Gambian these days. Everyone is a sell-out and trusts none of them. Too many back stabbings these days more so from our educated and respectable ones.
It looks like man never learns from history. Tomorrow will the turn of those who are helping in the disappearances today. Sometimes i have no sympathy for any one who helped in the torture or killings fields in the Gambia. There are people alleged to be buried in toilets as we saw one of the postings some weeks ago. I hope they are wrong and they never happened. However, there is no fire without smoke.

U all have to excuse me for wondering over and over in Bantaba. It's now a cliche, but I find it difficult to stop wondering. Is Yaya going to stay in town if he lost power? All these military guys that have disappeared and are still disappearing by the month, where are they? If they are killed and buried secretly, there has to be a commission to look into this after Yaya.
As cynical as it sounds, a big trouble may be looming over Gambia's near future.

I certainly do not envy one who succeeds Junkung. That person has a lot of things to do right and the expectations of Gambians will not be met. That person will become a scapegoat and will inherit the problems already being laid down.
Certainly i cannot see him stay in the Gambia. He has a lot of pride that he cannot humble himself and see some one in office.
We definitely need a truth commission in the Gambia and may be Bamba you can be nominated to head one. People should be prepared to carry loads of tissue paper to the sessions because the stories will move mountains to a point that we might even believe they are witch huntings if the postings that showed up are anything to go by.

Very scary kondorong. Which commission will have the nerves to visit and exhume chopped body parts from graves, if they are all mutilated and buried?
U are perfectly right, those that are to take over from Jammeh will never have an abmirable job from the start. |

I have learnt many years ago to not succeed a group of so called revolutionaries. Even an angel will fail after succeeding them. You find yourself in a quagmire of fire fighting issues rather than concentrating on meaningful projects. In most cases, people will even begin to favour the status quo.
Halifa has a big task ahead if he wins. He must be ready for 16 hour work shifts five days a week. Even that might not be enough.
Well the same people who are alledged to have chopped the dead bodies will be asked to exhume them. I will be happy to be your scribe at the commission. |

The situation is getting bigger and bigger. Every day more and more sadness emerges. What next? People who should be working for a better future for themselves are condemning themselves at this tender age of their life.
yaya at just fourty and has a lot to live for is instead closing all doors for himself for the rest of his live. This is unwise and aint worth it. |

Good to see your posting. You have been quiet for sometime. I thought you also drank kanilai medicine. You know Junkung operates with a remote control. (laugh) |

Kondorong, u've brought smile to my lips. U are very right again, there is always going to be someone to take the commission to the burial sights, the former pal-bearers will still be around. Am sure, as my scribe, u'll tremble your head off while writing.
Taalibeh, I dont think Yaya thinks he's going to leave. What's the name of the president that transformed his throne into an empire many years back? The name is somewhere in my head. That' how confident they are, u know. |

Sometimes I am lost for words. I cannot imagine for a fraction of a second what makes a human being to be this merciless to their contemporaries. I believe we are meant to bring happiness to each other and not trouble and misery.
A Gambian behaving on his fellow Gambians like this cannot be comprehend. |

We have to invest in education which will stop making people dependent on the state for jobs and handouts. Junkung is using the might of the state to hold us to ransome. In the west, who cares about a job in the public service. One can survive without it and that creates independence and they can easily stand up for what they believe is wrong. Otherwise there will be many more sankofas. EDUCATION EDUCATION EDUCATION is the key. |

| I am not sure now if education alone will do. Look at Dr Taal and the rest of the jammeh sycophants. Taal according to rumour is claiming that he cannot get any where else a job that pays as much as his current job. If this is true he is mommoth pessimist. |
