Janky..as a tourist I feel safe, as long as I dont overstep the mark and get too involved.....
For ordinary gambians life is very different. They are stopped and searched at road checkpoints several times a day and can be detained for very little.
At the beach Gambians are arrested daily for not having their security badge. They are taken away for a few days, made to do hard labour, starved and then released without charge. Often they are badly beaten...including women.
None of this has any publicity, because if it did the tourists wouldnt like it. It is done in secret under the cover of darkness...but it is done.
Ordinary decent Gambians are suffering. All they want to do is be allowed to make a small living. To be treated with respect as a free human. That isnot too much to ask.
As a tourist, the next time someone hassles you at the beach..think WHY? and think about the alternative if these people arent allowed to make a living: Arrest, torture, death......Do tourists really want that in their name? I DONT!! |

Lemon Time. I apologise if I have upset you in any way that is not my intention. I know that all gambians are suffering, I do read and hear about these things happening in Gambia.I am married to a gambian and hear things from the family there. Why am I still here in the UK? I need to carry on working for a few years so that when I go to Gambia I can help the family as much as possible, that is my aim in life.
I am naive I suppose to all the going ons in Gambia but I am eager to learn, all the good and bad, isnt that a good thing? If I could take all the pain and suffering away believe me I WOULD.
Gambiabev, How long have you been going to Gambia and how or where can I learn about what is happening. |

Janky, Learning about the Gambia. Reading the newspapers (most of them on the web- Daily Observer, The Point, The Gambian Journal, Allgambian.net, Freedom newspaper,...)and following chat and discussion forums. Take care, you easily get addicted to it.
and of course : going at least once a year. |

I feel like you each time I visit my family (husband's) in Gambia. I love the people so much. We are building in Gambia at the moment, not in the "blackpool of Gambia" area but in the family compound. This is so that when we go to Gambia I can "live" with my family while I am there. My husband's best friend in Gambia has named his little girl after me and just 2 months ago my sister in law named her baby girl after my daughter. It is a honour for this to have happened. I also sponser, with my husband, 6 children with their education and will do EVERYTHING that I possibly can to help them have a good future to build their country up and hopefully have a better life for the future generations. If it was finacially possible I would live in Gambia and also try to find a job to help my family. This is MY DREAM that hopefully may one day become a reality. The way to help The Gambia, in my eyes, is to help the children as much as possible and give them a good education so that they WILL change Gambia for the better. I know it is heartbreaking to think what is happening now but I genuinley believe that the future of Gambia lies in the hearts and minds of the children. This is why I will do everything for my family that I can. |
