Hey, do people not think that there are people in the UK that aren't feeling restless with our politicians, I know I for one would gladly put lead in the ear of Blair and his cronies. But hey, that's only my opinion but doubt I stand alone on this. To be quite honest I don't think any of the other parties are any better. Just a way of life that good people have to put up with.

PEACE x

There is a big difference between UK and Africa. I went to college there and have travelled there many times. I have travelled to atleast 15 countries around the world.

You certainly have a system which allows you to voice your opinion and if you manage to convince many people to buy your policies you form a government. In africa, merely having a different opinion is a treasonable offence and you must be silenced. Opposition is seen as unpatriotic and therefore must be arrested and tortured. You atleast have social services that cater for the poor what ever its problems.

For those of us who have lived in both worlds know this better. If only Africa could get half of what you people call bad governments, i tell you there will marked improvements in the lives of all and saundry. Corruption is so rampant that some presidents have become richer that the state. Mobutu was a clear example. he was said to loan the government money on his own terms for a man who came to power very poor. How can the president own more wealth than the country he governs. By the time he left office Zaire was bankrupt, the economy was in a mess, poverty on the rise and crime a daily ritual. This is a country about 25% the size of the United States and endowed with resources like diamonds, gold, timber etc.

Sierraleone has one of the best diamonds in the world yet many of them have nver seen one. If you had flown over freetown, you only see rusted brown corrugated roof tops as if they are protesting the decadence and the suffering of the people they shelter. I am sure these have never been changed since the days of Bai Bureh. Yet their leaders were too rich for their economies. Many of them stored foreign currencies in water tanks they built in their mansions as camouflage while the turn deaf ears to the cries of the citizenry. The story is endless.

“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always.”

Kondrong I agree with u 100%. In uk we might not like the government or a politician....but at least we are free to express that. We have a truely democratic vote and we should use it!
We don't live in fear of expressing our views.
In Gambia so many basic human rights are broken daily.

How about the security arresting rastas for 'nothing' and cutting off their hair. This is a small thing, but shows the intolerance......

I am frightened that Gambia will have a coup and if it is not strong then civil war might prevail.

At the ballot box the current President may well prevail...but on the ground there is a different story. People are desperate and need change.

As you will have ralised by now Kondorong I need a little more time to learn of these things. I do know that all the money we raised for the Ethiopians was sucked up by the Government, all governments are greedy including ours in the UK. Our government don't really give a damn about the people, Blair and his embarassing partner in life are spongers of other countries, I can hear the people laughing at the UK because they are so embarassing. I agree, these countries with such wealth at their fingertips (diamonds, gold etc)are a disgrace, they choose to close their eyes to their own peoples suffering. But what can be done for these people. The thing that really pulls my heart strings is the way these people are so warm and friendly, I don't think it is put on for the tourists all the time as a way of getting money out of them. I had one guy wait outside my hotel on the morning I was leaving who brought me a small present to thank me for being so friendly, he was from a craft market and I hadn't even bought anything from him. Another lady who I bought a dress from gave me a present from her baby because I use to play with her. How can anyone be worried about visiting the Gambia...you get back what you give and all I did was show friendship...

PEACE x

As a tourist there is no problem. The only problem is if you get involved in the politics eg if a friend gets arrested.

Thank you all for your concern,
Gambiabev, you are now my wonderful friend. But still be careful

I have exusted every energy so am a wounded lion.Though human,I can't see this man who has got a human child treating other people's like bulls and donkeys. He thinks he can use us any how.I don't know for others but if NADD gets ONE vote in this comming election, then Halipha is a betrayer for He has not voted for himself.Because if he has then we will have two for I if allowed will vote openly so that Jammeh can know the way he hated me and my motherland, mine is worst.

Do please for those of you(I mean our concerned non Gambians) who we some times offend by our harsh replies, please don't blame us for we are frusterated and some of us have no peace of mind and as Europeans you may what stress can do.Its just that we ahve strong bodies if not we will burst.

That is what I had heard. So that is not democratic.
Government spies everywhere........

Only one person openly told me he was anti government.....and that is because he is so low he felt he had nothing to lose by saying it.

I know that a lot of gambians do not have any respect for yaya at all. Can someone please expalin to me then " If he is so bad why are they holding the African Summit in July in Banjul and why are other countries donating money/goods to build better roads for example" I love Gambia and I feel safer there than I do here in UK. It saddens me greatly to think that these beautiful people are suffering so much. I wish I could help more than I do now. My heart goes out to them , sincerley.

Janky,
The choice of gambia for au summit was decided a long time back. at the time people thought it was good for gambia to be hosting a leading african event. as far as I know nobody at the time was against it. It will put gambia into the spotlight.
Now however the spotlight is on gambia for different reasons.
To cancel now would through things into dissary.
