Ah..I sort of thought you were European; Black Brit, or perhaps American (the Oprah thing). None of my business really...
Yes my hair is the same. I can straighten it as much as I like but the slightest hint of humidity and ping, curly again. I sort of just go with the curls these days. Sigh, the tribuations of hair. There is a chemical treatment for caucasian hair but it's always seemed a bit drastic.
So forgetting the definition African lady, let's just say Black lady. Is the hair straightening thing to try to look 'white'? I can't see it myself. |

| The thing with African hair is that it requires time to mentain, and it hurts like hell to comb it, so we straighten our hair to make it easier and less painful for mentain, it has nothing to do with wanting to be white. And Fornby, you are right, the hairstyles done by blacks is an art and has been existing for a very long time. Since before the existing of fake hair. Back the the days women use thread and other stuff for fix their hair and make it easier to mentain. Its easier to have breads than afro, couse then u dont need to comb your hair every morning or even think about it, one less problem when you are in a hurry:) |

I am a black Brit, my parents are from the Caribbean. (im a big Oprah fan ) We have a quite mix in our blood line so my hair is not the same texture of afro.
You can use relaxers on European hair my sisters friend Has thick 'red' hair and she has it done but like you say its harsh.
Last year in New York there was a surge of black woman who had decide to go 'bald' it became very fashionable to have short hair. One of my sisters has very short hair not quite bald but not far off and she carries it off very well.
I think its a personal thing really, linked with self esteem we all know how we feel if were having a bad hair day.
I dont personally straighten my hair to look 'white' its more of a convience thing like Sibo mentions. I can get away with washing it a lot less frequently when its straight and its easier for me to manage if im away. I dont think its anything to do with wanting to look 'white' but more a sign of 'good hair' As a child I always remember elders talking about 'good hair.'
Maybe its just fashion, many of the black main stream women in the media have straight hair. I dont think its no different to 'white 'women perming their hair or tanning their skins or having collagen pumped into their lips to make them fuller, I wouldn't say they do this to look 'Black' so I guess my answer would be the same as yours |

Yes I noticed the bald trend in London. It can look fabulous but it all depends on the shape of the head. Not everyone can get away with it. The straight hair thing is also dismayingly fashionable amongst white women. I say dismayingly because it's a fashion I just can't follow. Oh well. |
