In my opinion African Confederation of Sahara better option. A union of Senegal, Mauritinia, Mali, Gambia, Chad, Sudan, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Sierre Leone, Liberia, Burkina Faso, Niger would be more realistic. Common religion, Islam, similar ethnicity and culture, similar economics would be good choice for these countries. While United States of Africa in the long term option, regional integration should be priority.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

The US of Africa will not work, for the following reasons,
The name = USA not working for some people.
Religious diversions/ languages/ tribes.
Africa is already in groups, Ecowas, Union of South African States,
EAS east african States.
The African Union/Nepad represent African interests/issues etc at international/World trade/commonwealth etc forum so some groups have been formed for interests of Africa.

It does not necessarilly matter the type of union. if the people and the leaders in particular do not wish it to work - e.g. stop smuggling money from the nations' purses, it stand no chance in hell of working. The leaders must be committed to it and their motifs must be clear [to develop the member states and better the life of the people]. The first step should be economic integration, legal integration should come later. Nevertheless there must be a watch dog responsible for over-seeing that there are no civil rights abuses. However, if the leaders have the political will and their motifs were clean in the first place, there would not be a need for that.

Big Moe,

...'United States of Africa: for unity remains a day-dream where selfishness, greed, power exessiveness, paranoi, favortism of one's lineage is the order of the day. People support not beacuse of the value but because of their association.

Apparently, if Nkrumah, Cabral and Thomos Sankara lived to accomplish their missions, then a United Africa would have been a ticket by now. Thank God and His goodness, we are still blessed with the likes of Halifa Sallah, Sidia Jatta, Nelson Mandela, et cetera... A lot of work is needed to get us there.

http://gainako.com/fejango/Issue~255-2008/

I commend you for a wonderful thread.

Catch you on this vehicle later. United Africa!! Amen

Regards always,
Dalton.

Halifa, is an asset to all of Africa; unfortunately politics makes us blind to truth and reality. No reasonable person can deny Halifa's talent, he is gifted and an asset. It is rather unfortunate that we Africans destroy each other in the name of politics while the other side stands by a look. Demba Conta said "if what am saying is what you know as right then one day you will be my friend" Africans and humans for that matter tend appreciate their gifted citizens when they are long gone.
Just because you disagree with a person on an issue does not make that person a bad man and everything he does is wrong. It seems no matter how exposed we are we tend to stick to our old ways; I attended the annual African Liberation Day in DC for the first time in 12 years. I could not believe it when one of the organizers came to me and said we the guys from up country (provinces and the City guys decided to squash our differences and join forces) I was thinking to my self there should not have been any differences in the first place.
Like Dalton, I think the dream of a USA is slipping away, it chances for success were higher during the Kwame era. Now we are dived and too dependent on the west. Every country is fending of her self, our brother issues are not our problems any more. Classical case of divide and conquer.

“Revolutions are brought about by men, by men who think as men of action and act as men of thought.”

Kwame Nkrumah

Bro Ebou4th,

Thank you for your vigilance. You are a great asset as well, just like the one you are bashing for his greatness. Having interacted with you for the past year, I sensed great values in you that many can rely on if true redemption is the goal of Gambians.

A united Africa is too good for us to have; sound too much independence; too much freedom and liberty, though it is long over due. This owes its fact to a mindset that is complex. We need a system change completely. Until such a time, we might as well stop complaining about the fiasco and start offering soulutions.

Personally, I believe that people like Sam Sarr of the Foroyaa; Pap Saine of the Point; Suwaibou Touray of Foroyaa; Amie Sillah of the Foroyaa; Fatou Jaw Manneh and the many others has paved the way for a true struggle. All we need to do is to pick of the scattered pieces and claim freedom, equality and justice.

Regards,
Dalton

Turk, i totally agree with what you have to say and the fact that Africa is so huge with so many cultural differences. The unification of atleast the sub saharan states and the west coast would definitely be a start. With all the resources and raw materials available in the continent, am always bewildered why it is not being utilized in the best interest of the continent. Africa is ten times the size of United states of America with unlimited better yet enough resources to make it one of the most habitable places in the world. I kinda agree that the dream has faded away to a certain extent yet we as African should figure out a solution for our misery and come up with solutions. It seems it is obviously always on the Agenda lately , the lost dream is even being reincarnated by modern day leaders Like Jammeh and company . The introduction of a common currency would have been the stepping stone but just like everything in Africa it fades away and dies as if it never existed. Thats one thing I commend Yahya and Obasanjo for ,they have been brokering peace in the region hoping to foster that African Unity amongst us all through out their tenure in office. The surge of African foreigners in gambia is a true testament of what Jammeh stands for AFRICAN UNITY. Africa is caught up in what i would call the set up to fail syndrome the impetus of which happened surreptiously .The failure of africa today can be traced back to the colonialist and their jerked up plans . Personally i think Africans still act like modern day slaves in the 21 century .We know our down fall and we still decide to be foolish about our fate.

The thing is if Africa rises from its slumber sleep it would be like awakening a giant, i gaurantee you the west will fall shortly there after. They thrive on our ignorance and foolishness bro.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Conference sorry i had to give you a brief explaination from wiki it's easier to understanding,if you ask me but bad for research.......................................................Peace

I agree Jambo groups have been formed to look out for the interest of Africa, but i doubt if they are very effective in solving our problems. The African problem is bigger than what most assume is just laziness and lack of understanding amongst us. Africans. We were set up to fail from day one.........................................................Peace

The seperation of Gambians So called city boys and dudes from the provinces is a nation wide issue Ebou4th. Almost every state has it's little outcast group that feels that they don't get the recognition they deserve, What they are failing to understand is that in every city boy there is also a village boy somewhere in him. "Most city boys are product's of village boys so what the problem is?" My father was a villager and his father was a villager but am not,Yet that makes me a villager too.We are very petty people if you ask me, we are more worried about self esteem issues than trying to solve our problems. On the other hand i personally truely feel Halifa is the answer and the best alternate after Jammeh for he is also a visionary leader the likes of which we ain't seen in Years.....................................................................Peace

My brother,
You are a great idea I don't mean you have ideas, you yourself are ideas.I swear If I were president I will today appoint you my adviser no matter your age.

You see though your news is like an almost impossible thing, but the idea once implimented by our leaders,we could join the rest of the continent and even without them, all your dreams would come to pass.Infact we could do more.

God bless you I like possitive thinkings like this. Our leaders should listen to ideas like this rather than meeting everytime settling disputes, wars, famines, aids and all kinds of human right abuses ect Africa oh Africa!

I can't laugh I am sad.

African unity is attainable with all African countries included. This enormous task squarely lies on our leadership across the continent.

It is the leaders who create the vision and lead their people to achieve the goal. Unless African leaders realize the importance of unity and how to achieve it, Africa will always remain in a sorry situation.

Leaders make or break a nation. Yes Africa consist of all kind of people from different works of life. However, Europe consist of all kind of people with different backgrounds and religions. If Europe can unite, why not Africa.

United States consist of all sorts of people; Natives, Irish, Germans, Jews, Africans, Asians, etc. Etc. If the country can unite why not Africa?

It is a false pretense to state that we cannot unite because of our differences. We have more in common that we differ.

It is difficult to achieve this goal, but we can achieve it and in our life time. It depends on our leaders and the kind of leadership they can pursue.

Let no one tell me that Africa cannot do it. If others did it, yes we can too? Obama!!!

Great inspiring topic...

I disagree. While leaderhip is important, indiction not deduction must be the method to integrate the africa. Social Engineering seem short cut. But in the long run it creates more problems than benefits. For example USSR. Disaster. Alternatively EU followed indiction as the unification process, it was the most successful political process so far.

THe examples you give is not similar to realities of Africa and actually followed the similar approach I was proposing. For example EU started with Holand, Belgium, Luxembourg as Benelux than Germany, Italy started almost 60 years ago as Steel Production Union. Than it took decades to include countries like Spain, UK, Portugal and Greece. And just recently eastern european countries joined.

Your example about US is different too. These different ethnic groups integrated to English/American culture, but they had the will. They migrate to new country so they had no choice to integrate, those who don't have the will, they were asimilated. Do you think a christian south african will be ok to integrate muslim mauritinians. In case of africa, not only ethnicity, race but religion, language also different.

I have a question for you, you said you have more common than difference. Tell me what is more common or what is the common and what are the differences? Leadership is important but the future africa lies on gradual integration from pieces to whole not from top-down approach.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.
