If you ask me Dbaldeh darboe would care less about the opposition simply because they had a good chance to unseat jammeh and due to fooolishness and carelessness they all dropped the ball. If Jammeh was such a bad leader and the worst dictator West africa has ever seen. I would think the issue would be how to unseat him not who is gonna be Mansa or i need to be Mansa since i had the most votes last election both Darboe and the pulo Futa brother Hamat renegged and walked when Jammeh was most vulnerable. Now it's more like game over boy' i won. Last election it was 70% of the votes watch what's gonna happen this upcoming election. The only person who stands a chance of handling the countries affairs right now is Halifa no doubt about that i personally think with him we will forget about tribal politics for good....................................................................................Peace

There cannot be a meaningful united opposition without the blessing of the UDP. Gambians have to accept this and plan to work with the main opposition party. If what Gambians aspire is a united opposition, UDP has to be at the forefront. It is unreasonable to sideline UDP especially Darboe.

If the ABD claim is true then the ABD advocates should be man enough to come out and state their reasons. If these reasons are credible then Darboe has to be convinced to give his blessings to the democratically elected nominee. The leadership issue/problem has to be addressed first and foremost before any call for a union.
It is time for straight talk, and honesty.

Ebou4. Your comment above is the kind that led to the collapse of NADD. While I agree that the opposition cannot win without UDP, it is also equally true that any other coalition cannot win without other parties. This is simply the truth and the facts of the 2006 election has proven that.

A coalition of UPD and NRP was formed and they failed dismally as well just as NADD did. The coalition of UDP and NRP from Hamat Bah and Many others' perspective was that when you put together UDP the supposed largest tribe and Fulas argueably the second largest, then you have a winning formula. This coalition turned out to a deception and miss calculation of the political dymentions in the Gambia.

Yes, without UDP no winning formulae, but also yes, without NADD no winning formula. So what are we celebrating for when either coalition will not win?

I have always argued that it is a political sucide to say without one party or one man, things will not work. We have to be realistic and put our individual political dreams aside.

It is an undeniable fact, putting all these parties together gives us a better opportunity to defeat the incumbent. Anything less is a dream that will never come true.

For starters Waa Juwara is a seasoned political scientist and one of the most honest politicians thus far. If not anything i can gaurantee you that he believes in the ideals of democracy and no one's fool . While ya'll busy casting blame for his so called rumoured defection. He is focused on other things and i will borrowthis excert..

“What I am after is to have the whole country reconciled. To see to it that whatever difference is between us, is forgotten and become one,” he remarked.

“I am calling on the entire opposition to put The Gambia first before anything else,” he said, adding that the current government is everybody’s government and Yahya Jammeh is every Gambian’s President.

He expressed his expectation that in a year from now, the opposition would be gracing such state functions as the President’s Dialogue with the Peoples’ tour. He revealed that in furtherance of the goal he would take it upon himself to discuss the idea with all the opposition leaders in the country.

My question to everyone is where were you when he was being tortured? Who really tortured Juwara? why is Juwara supporting a so called dictator and asking everyone to stop castigating people and calling Jammeh a dictator? The fact is despite popular belief he is none of the above and Waa being a genuine political scientist had no choice but to bow down to a player that is embarking on sound policies and practical ventures.

Gambians are the most dangerous people you will meet I was once told. I spoke to a man I consider a father figure who is also a Governor somewhere in Sareh Pirass. During the transition he lost everything to the regime and despite that, still chose to work for them. When questioned about why he would want to work for a regime that destroyed his livelihood and disgraced him in Public his answer was I chose to work for the regime because after re-evaluating the situation and setting all grudges aside for a better Gambia, I came to the realisation that this MAN JAMMEH HAS THE INTEREST OF THE NATION AT HEART.

His decision was Not based on the fact that he lacks the resources to live a decent life or needs Jammeh in any kind of shape or form, his family can afford him and his baggage trust this. The fact is he understood what Jammeh is striving for and he knows that there are a lot of unscrupulous individuals who will smile in your face with the brightest white teeth and then try to destroy you if they feel there is a threat at hand . It happened to him the first day he reassumed his job the snitches and shady bro's started their handy work and almost succeded. From what i derived out of him ,this is truly the gambian dilemma. We just don't wanna see anyone doing better than we assume they are, what we like most is to suffer together ain't that right.

Jammeh is having to deal with this nonsense on a daily basis and this does not even excluded ordinary civil servants who just wanna do their jobs. This same cancerous worm is everywhere including cyber space. In the cyber world it is a gaurantee that there is always a half baked opinionated indiviual who would base stories on mere speculations and the good ole Gambian chinese whisperers and call it Fact. Makes you wonder what schools they went to and what kind of ethical morals they have .

What started the strike that led to the student killings if ya'll wanna be real? In 1981 Kukoi perpetrated the coup yet who killed the 1000 Gambians in the Kombo's. As of present i am yet to hear Kukoi killed such and such so who killed who? What it boils down to is we have a tendency of becoming animals when given the chance especially with a little power included. Then it becomes a deadly combination for a half baked fool with power is worse than an illeterate.
If Waa wishes he can cross the carpet 10 times as long as it is in the interest of the nation. Hmmmmmmm Hmmmmmm how many of ya'll living in Gambia and doing something for the interest of the nation............................................................................Peace

Moe, I commend you for standing firm beside your man Jammeh. I don't think there is anything wrong with supporting one side or the other in a democracy. Without opposing sides we don't have a true democracy, so speak loud and clear bro for what you believe.

However, with all the enthusiasm you Jammeh supporters have, you have to admit in private that President Jammeh has some explanation to do on his policies and behaviors in office. Let me just mention a few items and hope that would be suffice.

As a strong supporter of Jammeh how do you explain the frequent hiring and firing and rehiring and refiring of public officials? How could any government be effective without any stability of the work force?

How do you explain to the whole country that Jammeh is diverting our resources to develop beyond any reasonable measure his own village of origin which has no strategic importance to the Gambia?

How about all the arrest and detention without trial of all these folks some of whom disappeared from their families for months and years?

How would your man Jammeh explain the issue of him being able to cure HIV/Aids, falsely treat all those vulnerable people and let them mingle back into society spreading the diseases to others?

Moe, with all due respect, I think Jammeh has some learning and growing up to do to become an effective President. He is no longer in the military and therefore should do away with threats to the Gambian people.

What say you Moe?

Thanks keep it coming!!!!

The question of electability was not the reason Darboe gave in his press release explaining his defection from NADD. In fact if I recall, Darboe was never very clear about his reason for leaving. The main reason he gave was that there was "lack of trust...".
The electability of Darboe or anyone for that matter was never presumed in the MOU. The MOU laid out a procedure for selecting the flagbearer.
Besides the question of electability may not afterall depend on Darboe (UDP)'s share of the electoral market, considering that UDP is a "restorationist" party drawing its livelihood mainly from the defunct PPP and NCP supporters. As a matter of fact, at the time of selecting the flagbearer many people considered Omar Jallow (O.J.) more electable than Darboe.
Darboe's insistence on being the flagbearer raises another question entirely. Considering the role set out for the flagbearer by the NADD MOU, that is retiring from politics completely after one five-year term, it looks like Darboe is not the one to honor that requirement. The flagbearer position appears to be suited for someone who is not so hungry for power. Darboe, by all indications will entrench himself as soon as he holds that power, just like Jawara and Jammeh
.-Kayjatta

Well, may be the author needs to revisit the MOU once again. I think if he does, he will undoubtedly concede that to say electibility is not presumed in the MOU is deceitful and not very clever. The MOU did envisage a sellable flagbearer. As I have said before, this requirement tilted more in favor of the UDP than any other party since unlike others, they can rely on some form of statistical metrics that are irrefutable and which goes on to attest to their candidate’s electibility over any other contender within NADD, and this is not to mention their undoubted status as the main opposition party in the country with structures and political resource level that uniquely spreads throughout the length and breadth of the country. They are the only opposition party endowed with such a privileged electoral strength and organization.

I am baffled by the statement that OJ was considered more electable by most people. I wonder which people the author is referring to. Perhaps, the ones living in his household [I don’t know]. Again, this statement is not borne out by facts. Should the author still wish to maintain this position then I would like to know the metrics behind his facts. The truth of the matter is, out of the number who voted for the opposition in the last presidential election, 83% voted for Darboe and this is despite OJ’s high profile membership and support [we know that he later fled to the UK apparently on medical grounds] for NADD. He [Darboe] even got far more votes in OJ and Halifa’s home constituency of Serrekunda central than NADD. I think when these facts are borne in mind, the author’s statement then only become absolute nuts.

Another disingenuous statement made by the author is that ‘UDP’s livelihood depends on first republican parties like NCP and PPP’. But here are the facts; When Decree 89 [the obnoxious law that initially banned these parties from indulging in active politics] was repealed, both the PPP and NCP registered with the IEC as separate parties of independent legal standing and despite this, UDP remain viable. They even outscored the NCP in the 2001 presidential election. They also severed their alliance with the PPP immediately after the 2001 presidential election and yet still remain the largest opposition party in the country. The fact that they draw good support from the former supporters of these parties, therefore, does not in anyway create affinity of any sort between them. It is only a natural thing to happen. The PPP and NCP were the largest parties during the first republic. Hence, any second republican party would have to court the support of their followers if they are to become a force to reckon with. That is why both the APRC and UDP are such a formidable force, and PDOIS the exact opposite. Besides, we are not talking about alien voters from planet Mars here. These are bona fide Gambian votes that are representative of all works of life and demography of the Gambian society. So to suggest that UDP some how owe their livelihood to the former parties of these voters as if they are commodities of some sort over which legal ownership can be exercised is too condescending and abhorrent. This issue is nonetheless an irrelevant consideration. I think what the author has demonstrated here is pure and typical low class pettiness and grave ignorance.

I did not suggest that electibility was one of the reasons advanced by Mr. Darboe for quitting NADD. All that I said was that it adequately compensated the forgoing of the argument that the UDP was the biggest party and therefore deserves to lead. They were still left with the same bargain chip as would have been given by the latter.

The UDP had articulated their candidate’s electibility through their Deputy Leader, Mr. Yaya Jallow, who was also the official responsible for the party’s business within NADD but then it soon became clear that the ABD project had taken firm and has severely clouded and impaired the judgments of other NADD players. Only NRP could accept the merits of their case. That was not the kind of climate that would have allowed genuine and credible debate to take place with a desire to yield positive and meritorious results. That is why the UDP decided to end the game and focus on the fight against the incumbent. It is for the same reason that they were not proactive in dealing with the frivolous and vexatious charges that were coming from NADD and directed against them, not that they have nothing to say. They understood that a squabbling opposition can only help bolster the incumbent and hand him victory on a sliver plate. NADD too understood this but they couldn’t care any lesser since it was obvious that they were not serious contenders. They knew that anyway. The only thing that could have given them joy is to spoil it all for UDP/NRP and help maintain the status quo. I do not think they have achieved this either. I am convinced that nothing they have done or said has influenced the outcome of the 2006 presidential election.

It’s got to be remembered that the ultimate trophy, at least from the UDP perspective, was not the flagbearership of NADD. It is the power that resides in the incumbent. That is what needed to be captured so that it could be utilized to bring about the necessary reforms that the MOU envisaged. It was obvious that if the UDP had chosen to insist on securing the flagbearership at all cost, nothing on this earth could have stopped them from doing it. They’ve had the leverage to veto any candidate that is not theirs’ and consequently force the process to go to a primary which they would have won with ease. However, this would have been counterproductive. The process would have dragged too close to the presidential election thereby giving them little or no time to mobilize resources and effectively take on the incumbent. By the time everything finishes, they would have had less than a week to present their candidate to the Independent Electoral Commission for nomination. The political charlatans and charades behind the ABD project would still not back the candidate anyway. The likes of Halifa Sallah would, however, stay but will not pull their weight behind the candidate. Everything would have been mucky and the consequence intolerable and devastating. UDP would have been left resource drained, severely ridiculed and politically hopeless both in the eyes of the electorates and in the face of the incumbent. In the eyes of Ayatollah sallah’s camp, they would have been the political laughing stock of the decade. That is something the UDP could not have allowed to happen. None of their adorable supporters and militants would have forgiven them for that. I personally would have been mortified.

The MOU did not do require anybody’s retirement from politics after five years service as president. What it postulates is that the candidate will serve for one term of five years after which he/she would not seek re-election and will not support another candidate. That doesn’t mean that the person cannot participate forever. It only meant that he/she cannot participate in the first election that his presidency preceded since that would be the point when NADD will be duly dissolved to allow everybody to revert to their original parties and to contest on the basis of their individual party programmes. What this provision seeks to do at this point is to prevent any party from unduly benefiting from the incumbency factor that would be associated with the out-going president. That is all what was envisaged, not a perpetual exclusion of any citizen from the politics of the nation. I think it is inconceivable to even think that any civilize politician or political organization would consider making or agreeing to such an obnoxious and appalling undertaken. The right to political freedom is inalienable.

It is now generally accepted that NADD disintegrated at the point of the flagbearer selection. The MOU was adopted and signed by the signatories including Mr. Darboe in 2003. That is 3yrs before the flagbearer selection took place, and the year five term limit clause and all that comes with it were still part and parcel of the MOU. No controversy arose during this entire 3yr period regarding the one term limit issue and has never been connected to the stalemate that characterized the flagberear selection, and there was none whatsoever. Therefore, to suggest that Mr. Darboe was the one not to honor the one five year term limit requirement is not only ludicrous but also delusional. It is like nonsense upon silt. This charge is simply a replica or an extension of the smear campaign that partly necessitated Mr. Darboe resignation from NADD. It is simply not borne by facts or underpinned by any tangible evidence of any sort. Not even a circumstantial one. This is something Ayatollah Sallah surrogates, Yero Jallow [Dalton] and Co., have maliciously manufactured and stuffed their cyber arsenal with it to fuel their deceitful campaign of against Mr. Darboe’s candidacy. That is all it is. Up till now and until eternity, they will never refer to anything done or said by Mr. Darboe or the UDP, either during the flagbearer selection or immediately after the MOU was signed, that could be construed, by any reasonable creature, as meaning that Mr. Darboe would have stayed beyond the stipulated term limit if given the throne under NADD’s ticket. This charge is simply a baseless and malicious one that could only come from hopeless politicians who have heavily implored a Kitchen and Sink strategy in order to prevail at all cost but who then failed awfully. The heartache became intolerable thereby forcing them to do or say anything close to their mouths. I think we need to understand this because it is exactly what happened in the immediate aftermath of UDP/NRP pull-out.

I have chosen not to dwell much on the charge that Mr. Darboe will entrench himself in power just like Jawara and Jammeh because I think that is an insult to the impeccable moral conscience of the gentleman especially given that he has consistently pledged that he would introduce a two five year term limit if elected president. That pledge has always being central to UDP’s manifesto commitments since 1996, the year Darboe first ran for president.

UDP/NRP coalition if based on the assumption that when you put together a coalition that comprises of the majority of the tribes in the Gambia is very unfortunate. All of us should stand against such brand of politics. Ebouth

I didn't know that some people are taking this allegation seriously but let me say this; this allegation is just one of the many the Sallah disciples were spreading around as part of their efforts to tarnish the credibility of the NRP leader, Hon. Hamat NK Bah, who once accused NADD of 'wanting a cake that is not yet baked'. Their Ayatollah was so furious about this that he had to summon a press conference to retaliate, and this charge is simply just a cheap and baseless extension of that retaliation. What Hamat have said was that given that his party scored 9% in the 2001 presidential election and UDP 34%, if the two forces are combined and mobilize resources together, he is confident that they would prevail in the 2006 election. This prediction was however proven wrong by the results of that year’s election, and from the UDP/NRP point of view, this was due to the unprecedented low-voter turnout that marred the 2006 presidential election. The tribal connotation here is a fictitious one injected by Sallah’s disciples as a mean of playing with the minds of the electorates. Given that UDP and NRP are headed by a mandinka and fula respectively and knowing very well the sentimental sensitivities the word ‘tribe’ could attract, Sallah disciples decided to fictitiously make this connection to aid their Ayatollah’s campaign. It is just one of their hopeless and pathetic kitchen and sink strategies. They don’t care who their harm or the amount of sin God was crediting their accounts. They just wanted to spoil it all for the UDP/NRP Allaince. That was all this is about. They resorted to tribal insinuation only when their arsenal ran out of ammunition and had not credible shots to fire. That was the moment of their ineptness.

I shall be going through other postings over the weekend with a view of addressing any further frivolous allegation against the UDP. Unless those on the opposite side put a stop to their grotesque campaign of deceit, I can't be asked to stop doing this.

Thanks

If number is the game why don't you pack your rags and join the APRC bandwagon? They've got over 60% of the numbers and is inviting the coalition of "patriotic" Gambians to rack up even more numbers to consolidate its power. If numbers is the be all and end all why is Moe not winning the bragging rights?

Bro. Shaka,

The kanillai connoction is a powerful one. Those that left are staying.

It reminds of this boys scout song, thus:

quote:
"God made the devil
Devil made the fire
fire-yeee, fire-yeee."

I am hitching on this song.

Certaintly big Moe ain't APRC but of late his threads here will make any wonder as to whether the Kan nilail connoction is not an infectious creeping one.

See Juwara is in self-denial:
-he goes to aprc rallies
-he praise-sing Jammeh
-et cetera, et cetera

Now we are told what?
That the M.O.U says this, says that, says this, says that...

Big Moe,

You see Dalton, if you got the numbers then you got fire. The devil sure makes the fire. At least that is the numbers theory. You got the power so long as you got the number, regardless who you are. You could be a lunatic, murderer, thief, lack sound judgement and an egomaniac and still hold power, so long as you got the numbers. So we need not mourn about our government but join the APRC coalition, like Jawara, Juwara and Dibba because they got the number.

Wow!! this is the closest we have ever come to opponents of NADD confessing that the policies of NADD stipulated in the MOU makes extremely good political sense and sound solutions to a dictatorial regime in the Gambia. Certainly the aboved quoted statement doesn't only make sense be it address the whole problem of leaders perpetuating themselves into power. Anyone who first read that statement would not have believed that it was written under the political climate that exist through out Africa.

"It is now generally accepted that NADD disintegrated at the point of the flagbearer selection. The MOU was adopted and signed by the signatories including Mr. Darboe in 2003. Nyarikang.

Truth and the absolute truth shall ultimately prevail. Only with time and lessons learned can humans come to realize the significants of facts surrouding politicy decision making.

It is widely admitted above that IT WASN'T about TRUST that lead to the departure of the UDP but the LEADERSHIP ISSUE. Who wanted it without be4 going through the entire fair process of selecting a leader - Primaries?

"Up till now and until eternity, they will never refer to anything done or said by Mr. Darboe or the UDP, either during the flagbearer selection or immediately after the MOU was signed, that could be construed, by any reasonable creature, as meaning that Mr. Darboe would have stayed beyond the stipulated term limit if given the throne under NADD’s ticket. Political spinning will never take the truth away forever from the spotlight. It is easy to pick and choose a topic that favors ones point and beat it to death. Yes, we do understand what happened why NADD disintegrated and that is why facts are begining to emerge. Read on to some of our contributions on this topic and see if we have never mentioned what Darboe did or said.

WOW, this is getting exciting and more to come....

Shaka, APRC got the best number [according to the official results] that is why they are in power. UDP got the second best number and that why they are the main [official] opposition in the country. This is the rules of politics. Majority = Legitimacy and any political union must take cognisance of it. Otherwise, it won't kick- off, no matter what anybody says. This is just a simply fact.

Thanks
