The following extract from the article(if this was the one Snuggles was refering to Madiba) sums up the truth is a few words;

These guys are after their money, pure and simple, and the ultimate goal is marriage so they can get a visa and move to the UK. The fact that they can fall for lines such as 'You are so gorgeous' is ridiculous."

Unfortunately, I feel that this whole phenomenon, in the Gambia in particular, is in the main due to European tourists 'adopting' their guide (and his extended family)/the beach fruit-seller(and her extended family)/their taxi-driver (and his extended family). They then 'donate' money for schooling/to buy a taxi/whatever thinking they are doing their bit to 'develop' the Gambia. All this leads to (I would imagine!) jealousy and almost a culture of 'well, if he/she can get this, then so can I'. On my trips to the Gambia I found it extremely weird that virtual strangers almost expected me to commit to supporting them just because I was a white tourist and had paid for them to drive me to the market in Serrekunda! To this day, I still find it crazy that you would just up and give some guy a taxi after spending 14 days being driven about by him!! Would you do that for someone you'd met in your home town???? I think not!

The article mentioned in this thread focuses on Turkey, a country I've visited 5 times yet I didn't see the same sort of philanthropy that is prevalent in the Gambia.

Meme, " Unfortunately, I feel that this whole phenomenon, in the Gambia in particular, is in the main due to European tourists 'adopting' their guide (and his extended family)/the beach fruit-seller(and her extended family)/their taxi-driver (and his extended family)." at the beginning it is not weird because you do not think you are going back, it is on the 2nd/3rd trip it gets weird.

some of what you say is true, a lot of people go to gambia and end up supporting a "guide/taxi driver etc becuase we care. That is usually our first contact with local Gambians.
but for a majority of us the rot sets in when the demands get stupid,
buy me a mobile phone, for what so that you can call your friends,
I need rice, okay i will buy some, no it is better you give me the money i buy it cheaper
lend me money for a taxi then I can do good business, in whose name will this be, yours mine etc.
Buy land I will look after it for you.
Also when I first went to Gambia the demands were small, school fees that worked out at £10.00 pa 500 dls, it all made sense.

For me the rot set in when the fuel price went up and the taxi driver need every single thing you could think of to take a trip, wheels, spark plugs, oil, tax paid. I knew for a fact I was not the only visitor that used him so he had his regular in season and out of season clients but still he was "poor".
Or in the case I have met families who lost their sponsors because they spent the schools fees on other things, the sponser/friend has washed their hands of them and they are now back to square one.

Oh happy days

I think I am typical of alot of western women. We come to Gambia either for a holiday or a cultural experience and then get targeted by a Gambian man.

I have posted on this alot, so wont repeat myself.

If you want to help Gambia I would suggest working through a recongised charity. Action aid is brilliant!

I think what alot of women find hard to cpmprehend is that Gambian men will have a long term plan....my long term planis 12 months...for a Gambian it can be 10 years....

Hind sight is a wonderful thing. But I would encourage tourists NOT to suport individuals. The emotional burden can becomen too great. Best support a community project or a charity.

Or it could be the laziness of men ... why get a real job when you can sponge off a woman ..... I wouldn't be too proud of my sex if I were you .... these women are enablers but the guys are sorry excuses for men

Meme,

Laziness? On the contrary, they are active. Its a basic law of Economics, the LAW od DEMAND AND SUPPLY.

Becos they are poor, want a better life and these women have the money to buy themslves good sex from strong and healthly lads. Sex that rejuvenates the old bones, as confessed by a certain woman in her fifties in th said article.

Under normal circumstances these healthy young men won't even think of hugging some of these women more so wasting their youth on them.

I have been born, bred in the Gambia, spent most of my time iin the urban areas. When tourists roamed the streets trying to befriend us in stead. Now its the reverse, the hunted is now the hunter

I could have fallen in love with a an older woman but that would have been purely on genuine and mutual love, not for money or for greener pastures. I have had british friends(pen pals) some of whom visited me later , brought my family and i gifts and we too reciprocated their gifts in our own ways and this they apprecaited very much. Some i still do keep in touch, though i brought myself here and sponsored and still sponsor myself.

The issue of them taking the assets and later marrying a Gambian girl, is one side of the coin. The other side , instead the boys work hard to sustain these women, and if they are in the child bearing age get pregnant, then kick these boys out. Becos they see these boys as illiterates, they used them as stallions, or baby making factories or domestic slaves. When they have accopmlished the mission or outlived their usefulness they are disgraced and dumped.

To concude, these beach boys are not there becos they wanna be used and dumped, they are there becos the market exists. Though some for the culture clash , date whites for a change. if you see wat i mean.

IT TAKES TWO TO TANGO.

If the deal was an open one such as the sex trade in Thailand between Thai women and Western men, then that would be more straightforward and honest. Each side knows what the bargain is. There is a deal. MOney for sex. Sex for money.

In Gambia between the Gambian men and hte white women it is usually more subtle than that. Many women dont go there deliberately looking for sex. Gambian men APPEAR to date them..... but then the money side of the deal starts. The subtle and not so subtle pressures.

BUT if you called these men PROSTITUTES (which is what they are) they would be deeply offended. They are not ALL beach boys either. I have had ALL sorts of Gambian men trying to hit on me!!

IF these men offered white women the stark choice of 'you give me money and Ill give you sex' right at the beginning of the 'relationship.' Some women many still say yes please. But alot would say no thank you.

I have met a few mixed couples that seem geuninely in love and happy together. It is these examples that make the women think 'Perhaps mine is one of the genuine ones'. Of course, most arent genuine.

I saw the light and had a VERY lucky escape!
I am taking a year off from Gambia to rethink WHO I am helping and WHY. I hope to return refreshed in 2009.

I will return EYES WIDE OPEN. CYNICAL. HARDENED by the experience.
But still in love with the country and it's children and hopeful of helping in Kolior in a small way and supporting my little girl in Pirang.

BUT NO MORE GAMBIAN MEN!!!
