I think this is a very dicey issue. I don't believe artificially setting the legal age of marriage to 18 is the way to go. The most important issue they need to focus on is outlawing forced marriage whether the ages of the parties involved is 8, 18, or 88. |

I agree. Outlawing forced marriage will even allow women to marry way beyond the "legal" age of 18. Choice is more important, the more they have it the better. I might add acess to education is crucial. |

“Not only is it not Islamic, it is even inhuman to subject our girls to such an experience. We must continue to fight for the sake of a better future for our daughters,” said Rashida Al-Hamadani, chairperson of the WNC.
This is exactly what is missing, Some how I don't blame the man when he said “I will not divorce her, and it is my right to keep her. No need to sleep with her, at least I can have her as a wife. No power can stop me,” - “It is not a matter of loving her, I don’t, but it’s just a challenge to her and her uncle who think that they can put me in jail and also the judge has no right to bring me here. How did she dare to complain about me?” he threatened.
As Nasser added “I am afraid that the husband will escape from punishment because according to Yemeni custom and law he has not done anything wrong. Even if there is a law, no one respects the law,” This type of culture is just injustice, There are some cultures who got already marriage before they even sees the light of this world. Let them choose each other for their life , They are the one who may will spend the rest of they life together, and that will be a hell if it doesnt went practically way.
And is not that because it happen in an islamic country, Then should also be put in accounts of Islam. I agreed with this point that it is not Islamic, but inhuman. |

As a feminist I dont know where to start on this one!!!
Young girls being forced in marriage to older men is disgusting!
It is abuse.
It is abuse of power of the strong over the weak.
No one should be forced to marry anyone.
Partners should be freely choosen.
In the UK there seems to be some alignment going on over different legal ages to a general consencus of 18 years.
It is 18 for drinking and smoking now. It is going to be 18 for driving soon. 18 for voting. 18 for marriage.....
18 is young enough for all these things.
In the Uk there are girls disappearing from schools being forced back to Pakistan to marry someone they have never met. How can anyone defend that?!
These yong women are NOT possessions of the parents. They are individuals with their own identity. They should make their own free choices. |

Where is the mother of this girl and her sister? Probably she is made to shut up, being 'just a woman'. Shame and shame again to the 'father' (he isn't worth the title), hurray to the uncle. Let's all pray someone will protect these girls. Once again i realise how blessed i am to have been born in my part of the world, even more so for my own beautiful and intelligent daughter....... |

This is just disgusting, how can a 30-year-old growm man marry an 8-year-old??? What happen to the children´s right, what the hell was the father thinking when he married her daughter away to this man, if he was thinking at all?? The mother ofcourese does not have a saying, she was probably also married at the same age. The government should play their part and protect these young girls from these monsters calling themselves men...... Sorry if I offend anybody, but this is just BS and it pisses me off....... |

I do HOPE that they are not married to the in the sense of having a sexual relationship. But more in the sense of being promised to them! Even so it is still terrible. |

I call it plain sickness...
If it is left to me 1. No more than five years age difference 2. Either of the partners cannot be in their teens 3. Both have to consent to the marriage period....

Well..judging from the following extract from the piece they are not at all ready to see the light yet!
Begin QUOTE/
Sixty-one Parliament members (MPs) were recently part of a Safe Motherhood project that included an item for early marriage. However, the issue was rejected by the Evaluation and Jurisprudence Committee, which said it is a health issue and cannot be generalized. The issue was passed to Parliament’s Health Committee, where it will reside for an unknown duration.
End QUOTE.
How long is an "unknown duration"

We have seen some young women maried to 90 year olds in the US. There is a current legal case before the US Supreme Court where the sons of the deceased "husband" think that their father was not capable of making informed decisions when he married the lady.
Unfortunately, the young lady is also dead. Her elder son of another man is dead and only one daughter alive is less than two but also of a different father.
The question is how old is too old to get married and also how young is too yong to get married? |

I believe the case in question is Marshall v. Marshall (Anna Nicole Smith case) which the US Supreme Court ruled in her favour(I believe in 2006). I think you asked a pertinent question as far as how old or how young one should marry. I dont believe setting an artificial number for marriage is the way to go. |

The americans love to go to court about anything,I strongly suspect that there is a lot of money to be had somewhere in this case!

Yes, plenty money to go around. But you see one of the funniest cases of the century was when a man sued God to court for taking away his youth.
The court gave him his right to due process and docketed his case for hearing. It was eventually thrown out for difficulty in identifying God in a court of Law.
may be the man wanted to marry someone very young whomight be pushing him away due to his age. |
