born african, i have seen this clip a while ago. this is what happen with brain washing. in south africa ,it was delibarately done there especially in the tv's to make people look low upon themselves. with showing bad and evil associating with a certain skin colour, the sub-conscious mind automatically pick up what it is program to accept. but the ball is in the court of the black folks, don't let others perception of you be what you are, define your own image. thanks

Surah- Ar-Rum 30-22
"And among His signs is the creation of heavens and the earth, and the difference of your languages and colours. verily, in that are indeed signs for men of sound knowledge." Qu'ran

Thanx a lot brotha. to be honest with you, there is nothing that could shock me,(not even if my own mother pointing a gun at me threathening to shoot me) more than seeing innocent black children thinking so low about themselves.
it just broke my heart. i am extremely upset about this. folks with children, you have a big task. please, never let it come this far.
this is part of the effects of slavery. thats why when some empty heads say black people hold on to their past too much, it tears me inside. how can we forget about history when the effects are right here for us all to see?

Hi to you both,
Here is my reaction when I watched the video:

I watched the clip. I cried because I realised how deep the races issues are internalised and how soon in our lives the inequalities about ourselves take shape.
Personally, It brought back many memories of me as a little girl and our family being the only "brown" people in our area (I say brown rather than use the very racist word they sometimes used to call us), who more often than not were excluded from the community - this formed my personality - Always on the outside looking in, it was always happening somewhere else, but not expecting to achieve or be included in anything. This was the early sixties.
In some ways the clip helped me remember and understand who I am, and be proud of where I came from.
Anyway,
The actual test did not disturb me, I found it very raw and it cut into my soul, but I thought the actual method used, was very powerful.
If used appropriately it could be useful in changing peoples attitudes towards race, but used in the wrong setting could re-inforce racism.
I thought the context it was shown in was useful in bringing about the very interesting debate that followed.
I am however wondering if they tested white childrens reactions to the doll ? as the clip shown was not the full test, it was only 60 seconds.
please excuse me if I am missing the point here as I realise it has has provoked some strong reactions in you.
I am open to learning more about why this clip offended you.............

Best Wishes

this clip was really heartbreaking and sad...but growing up in white family, brought up in environment where believing that "who do you think you are, you are not better than anyone else, parents never saying anything good about their children since it was concidered to bring bad luck to them..." If I was put into that test as kid, I swear I would have pointed at the black doll as the pretty and good one. My older daughter cried sometimes after the daycare because she wanted to have blond and straight hair like all the other girls and I donīt know how many times I been telling my kids how beautyful their are in and out. Now she is really proud of herself and my younger one never had any issues with her skincolour or hair. I believe it was easier for her since there are plenty of kids with different colours around her. Itīs getting better I believe.
