Marabout Taken to Court
Wednesday 2nd April 2008

By Yerro Mballow & Malamin Conteh

Omar Simaga, a marabout, was yesterday brought to the Bundung Magistrates’ Court to answer charges of obtaining money by false pretences.
Simaga has been charged with obtaining D12, 000 from one Alhagie Njie on promise that he could make a long-standing stagnant relationship between Alhagie’s friend and the friend’s partner work.
In giving his testimony before magistrate Kumba Sillah-Camara on Tuesday, Alhagie Njie, a soldier posted to Kartong military post, told the court that he was introduced to Simaga by one Musa Jallow upon communicating his intention to Jallow.
‘I had a friend in the US who complained to me that he had a wife in America but that they’ve missed each other for a long time. He asked me to contract a marabout who could end his worries. When I informed Musa about it, he introduced me to Simaga who claimed that he can do something with the problem in just five days,’ adduced Alhagie.
‘I later gave him D12, 000 and a title deed so he could set to work. He retreated to Friendship Hotel for six days but nothing remarkable had happened. Instead, he asked us to give out cow, goat, sheep and fruits as charity.
When he was later approached about the assignment, he indicated that both the money given him and the charity were not commensurate with the type of task assigned to him. We then made additional payments of D77, 000 and D35, 000 but no impact’.

The case resumes April 14 for continuation.

If he is stupid enough to give away such a huge amount of money to this fraudster, then he deserves no sympathy. I hope he looses everything even the trial. Stupid man.

Reminds me of the tale of the miserable woman who failed to get the attention of her husband as she believes he scorns her. She decided to go to a marabout to seek for his help . The marabout asked her to leave some money a few dalasis to do (Listekarr) ; spiritual investigation over night. Well this marabout decided to check out the background of the married couple and found out that the said lady was very wealthy and she had lots of cattle but that she was very stingy. So stingy that she never eats meat and sells off all the milk from her cows to add to her stack of money in her piggy bank; (boity condaneh)Also that she cooks very bad food which even her children dispice and prefer scrounging for food from the neighbors. The next day when the lady return to get her results of the investigation , the marabout told her that he saw that he could help her solve the problem. The key to the success of her quest he told her was that she had to get him the milk of a lioness. The difficult bit was that she was to make sure that she milked the lion herself to get the desired effect on the intended potion which the marabout was to prepare for her.She left the marabout with a very heavy heart feeling that she would not be able to solve her problems as it definitely was too scary for her get close to lioness and milk it for her goals. It so happened that a lioness had given birth to a litter very close by in a forest. Because she was eager to win her husband over she decided to see what can be done. She studied the lion for several days and noted her feeding times. Later she killed a fat goat and threw it in the area but kept her distance. She continued doing just that but every time ,crept closer till the lioness got used to her presence and connected that to a free feeding session of good fresh meat without her hunting for it. She eventually braved up to touch the lion and ventured to the udders and there you go; milked it herself. She brought the milk to the marabout and explained how she obtained the said milk. The marabout then asked her about the rest of her cattle and she told him that she still has some left; he advised her to share this with the husband and her family . To cook meat and eat with the family and be more generous advising her that if she could get the trust of a wild lion that way then surely she must know that the husband would be an easier prey on this plane. Need I say more . The vultures are out there waiting to scavenge ; all they need is a dead body in this case any one who is foolish enough to throw a pound into the dealing pond after losing a penny.Scam artists and hustlers abound and all they do is wait for a ready mark; a unwary subject. This does not mean that one cannot get help from marabouts and fortune tellers because you get them even on the net as horoscope diviners and other such names.Caution is the key here.

Are you saying that one can get help from fortune tellers? Its like what the Wolof say: SU KOBO AMON GALAJJ, TAKA SI NDIGAM.

How come we still cannot move beyond where we are. How come all these hirings and firings and no one seemed immune.

Why all the beggars and yet we have the means to be rich and still needy.

I guess you have read or heard about the use of an astrologer by the British to lure the Americans into joining the war. I shall not name a marabout for any one but look towards Dakar, Touba , Tewawone or kherrmama, Kherr Cherno etc you living in Gambia know what am saying here. There are marabouts and there are charlatans scam artists who will stop at nothing to dupe any one. But there are God fearing marabouts who do help people and get results. Please do not ask me to name an individual marabout for you coz I will not. The fact remains that every where in the world there is evidence of their presence and from India to America you have a spawning of various personalities who prophess to be capable of foretelling the future . What about Nostrodamus. The mandinka say JEE KENSENG O BUKA KUMU. meaning unadulterated water never gets stale. Some people would tell you that certain major events that occurred in our dear country was predicted well before they did and if you deny this its your choice. Thats all I want to say on this matter

If i Am the Judge i will give the Mar-about(JUJU MAN) even more courage to go with his work.
Some must be out of sight for giving this huge amount out money for such nonsense, This is happens daily in our society's but some still just cant learns a lesson.
The JUJU man may have already a three store building and you will still be searching what you had ask him to do for you .

Give Sadqa out and pray for Allah, The rest is just self hoodwink.

If there is any truth to soothsayers, how come no one saw jammeh coming to power in 1992? I am sure, PPP members also consult powerful oracle leaders. The relationship between jammeh amd Jawara is more like the story of Moses and Pharoah. jammeh was nortured within statehouse and it was him who forced Jawara out of office.

I bet, between 1963 to 1992, many JUJUS were buried within the grounds and yet "...what is to be must be..." (Bob Marley).

I believe that we can all pray for ourselves. To believe that someone else can interced between you and God, is tantamount to self rejection. Like Ismaila Lo said: SO BUGAY KHAM FULA YALLA TOLO, SETAL FINGA TOLLU YALLA(. If you want to know how God is concrened about you, check how you value God. To walk away and do nothing, but that others can do it for you, is a simplistic approach to development.

Infact, private prayer (NAH FILAH) is recommended for all types of prayers apart from the five obligatory prayers which should normally be done as a group when possible.

You see, the likes of Ahmad Bamba were never rich but very God fearing. Today, oracle leaders are competing building storey buildings whilst those who come to them for "help", barely could afford what they are being charged.

The recent attempted coup proceedings of Mr. Jobe and his soothsayer is food for thought. THERE IS NO EASY WAY TO SUCCESS. THE WILLINGNESS TO TAKE RISK IS WHAT DOES. Your story above about the woman and the lion is a classic example that has been used over and over in resolving marital problems in the Gambia. I have used it many times. There is no short cut to success.

The late Bun Jeng talked about these sooth sayers and i had the tape. I will look for it and if possible se if it could be downloaded here. He asked them to stop telling people, that they dreamt about issues all time. ( NSIBO TAY YEH). That people should go out and work for their living. He said he could not understand when people visit him in Gunjur and are told that he was on the farm, they are shocked.

In the tape, he narrated the story of David, who was both ruler and prophet but very just. He said, during the nights, David used to go into town disguised as a beggar and asking people about their king. Everyone he met said he was just until one day, he met a young man who said that his only weakness was that he lives off of the sweat of his people who feed and cloth him. David then threw his rags, told the man he was the king. He then prayed to God for a skill and became a smith. From that day on, David worked and earned his living.

The Prophet Mohammed(SAW) was known to go hungry without food to a point that he would go to some of his disciples to see if they could help. Unless, i am blind, the Prophet certainly is closer to God than any one of us.

You see, the mystism issue predates Islam, and with its acceptance, was mixed with some traditional believes. If predestination is really true, then i cant see how anyone can pray for someone to live longer or win an election or become rich.

May be i am not educated enough to know, but i sure would like to know someone who can help me build roads in Yoro bawol, a High School, a hospital, and milk for all the villagers.

Like Mbay said, give Sadakhat to the poor or all your wealth will perish before your eyes.

Do you know why during naming ceremonies a chcken is slaughterd as well? Its an animist tradition to for tell what that child will become depending on which side the chicken lay. The Supreme Islamic Council has ruled it being used any more as unislamic. Talk to Sedia Ceesay at the institute in Talingding.

I am sorry if i offend anyone. But what is to be must be.
