EDITORS TRAINED ON EDITIORIAL MANAGEMENT
Editors of three media houses, namely, The Point, Foroyaa and News and Report, yesterday, completed a weekly-long training on editorial management at the Gambia Press Union premises in Serrekunda. The training was organized by the Gambia Press Union in partnership with the Gambia Media Support (GAMES), an organisation based in Denmark.
The issues dealt with at the workshop were mission, editorial policy, editorial meetings and access to information.
It was emphasized that both editors and reporters should be familiar with the mission and editorial policy of their paper which should serve as a guide in their operations. Once drafted, the editorial policy should be utilised to develop an editorial programme, which should determine what is published and how it is presented to the readers. Editors were told that they should always take into account the reception of readers to the articles that they publish.
Editorial meetings were discussed at length and each of the three media houses did hold editorial meetings, which was well received by the reporters in those institutions. All three papers agreed to hold regular editorial meetings from henceforth where they will review previous publications, make follow-ups on matters arising from previous publications and planning for future publications. The issue of access to sources of information was of great concern to the editors. The editors lamented the great difficulty they face in sourcing information. They agreed to further study the issue and come up with solutions. On Wednesday 2nd April, editors from most newspapers attended a one-day workshop on the issues raised at the workshop as well as other issues of common concern to editors.
