Most migration is economic migration, looking for a better life for yourself and your family.

From the UK people have migrated to USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia, Spain etc....

A better life for the family: more money, better work life balance, better weather, better value for money when buying things..... SOme people settle and become part of the local population, some people never assimilate and become part of the little britain abroad and some people never settle at all and come back home.

It is the same in reverse....mirgrants to UK come from all over the world, eastern europe and Africa being major areas at the moment. People come looking for a better life...whatever they consider 'better' to be. Some assimilate, some don't and some are unhappy and go home.

thanks anna and mowdo yero. anna, infact i apprecaite your comments. i never was looking at the issue from the angle you argued it. the mention of the west wasn't meant in a negative or bad way. if one look carefully at my comments, i was directly addressing men who abandon their families. in our society like any society abandonment of ones family is a great misnorma. i didn't at first intend to include the west in the story but just highlight the thinking pertern of people like mokendy.
Jambo ,the purpose of the topic is easy to pick out. Mokendy abandon his family for the hunt of the dollar. in that vain he coldn't see the reality in life .the point you are seeing is for some one comfortablly moving about in the world without any immigration restrictions. that is not the case of countless africans. the piece is an indirect message to all african men and women who travel living love one's behind .they should not keep way for ages for the hunt of resident paper or money. they loose their love ones and incure unmeasurabel sin. that is the key message. some people african or european who are with the western travel document hardly will fall into mokendy's situation so i don't expect any coloration in that vain. but i appraecaite anna's critic. i am not blaming any women for any pregnancy she never planned. infact i blame the men who betray their trust. marriage is a trust between two people .the men are at fault here. they know what i am saying.

Santanfara, the way you reacted to my criticism shows us all how passionate and sincere you were while writing your article! I think you know in your heart of hearts that i was as passionate and sincere while writing my postings in reaction to it. I am grateful to you for taking my remarks seriously! In fact (perhaps like you) i am a bit disappointed that not more people reacted to it, because the article in itself deals with a major problem of Gambian society. Believe me, i feel sorry for the men who left and who found a harder life than they expected to find and i feel sorry for the women who found themselves without a husband (THE person to put his arm around you when you are struggling with everyday-life) and a lover. And the children....

I don't think of myself as a writer of any kind, but i know i am good at explaining and getting my points across. Have done nothing but that for a long time now because it is my job. About 70% of my students come from immigrant families, there could be 20 different nationalities in one classroom easily. If anyone would dare to tell me that i have an arrogant 'western' mentality or that i do not know about immigration, i defy him or her. Teach me something i do not know already! Moreover, i love and live with one of these 'economical' immigrants (who did not leave a wife or wives behind fortunately, because where would that leave me?), so i know about both sides.
Anyway, wouldn't it be great to talk about all this over 'Dutch' tea (don't know if there is such a thing, we are great coffee-lovers). You are welcome anytime !

For MeMe: great to have you 'with me'! So, men are from Mars and women are from Venus? Did you steal that from Toubab1020 ? It is inevitable that you have the same DNA too - welcome to the family.

my point is this, when he left he left for a good reason, but to stay away for so long is not correct. as for the pregancy, did he not offer a divorce. For all the gambians who live in the hostile prison they could have made a visit many years ago. too many women have spouses living abroad. and these spouses have made lives, started new families in the "hostile prison", enough already

Yero, that is another very important angle to analyse immigration issues. i consider myself a strong hearted person but you nearly make me shed tears. you should send that poem to pa as well. i mean people need a little alerting.

anna. keep up your valuable contribution to the immigrant community. It is people who wish to sacrifice for others that do such difficult jobs. imagine the initail communication barrier? God bless. meme ,i hope venus is bit more lifely because mars isn't

Well, on all those happy notes I would like to add if I remember the initial story correctly, that the women in this story deserve great respect because they all stick to their husband which is the most lovely thing to see!!

May Allah bless them for their patience!

There are valuable lessons to learn from this story. The ambition of a family man to boost overall welfare of his lot prompted him to leave for greener patures (however green or grey the land turns out to be.) He would have discovered better income generating prospects in his greener land far, far away. Bev captured the point clear enough when she observed that movement from country to country; continent to continent is rather a drive of the human passion to explore elsehwre outside one's known sphere of contact. Expanding from the known to the unknown is part of wider discoveries. If life would offered better things on the moon, tell me if some space explorers would not choose a home for once. Even in the same country, movement is normal. Rural-urban drift is part of that movement. Some times it ends up with discovery of new life and new social ties.

All in all, Santanfara emerged with a captivating issue and real caller at that. In our wider contact with others it is quite possible someone we know is already affected. Well done Santanfara.

Cannot count how many times in my life i thought 'Oh, i would like to live here'. That was when spending my holiday in a French village, at the coast of Tuscany or on some Greek island. Dreaming about how i would be French with the French, Italian with the ....etc. A holiday dream and that what was it stayed. Because 'at home' were my children, my family and my friends. Not to forget a steady job with all its conveniences and my own secure place to live.
Some people are adventurous more than me and they make their dream come true. They sell all their belongings and start a new business, buying a delapidated 'chateau' and turn it into a hotel or start a boatrenting enterprise in Greece. Admirable and courageous in my not so adventurous eyes.

Is that the same type of immigration we are talking about in this topic? No, of course not - because this is immigration because of a necessity (or so people tend to think). It has nothing to do with the human need to 'explore outside one's sphere of contact'. It has everything to do with finding somewhere to make better money. That is why some people leave everyone they love behind, give all their (and maybe their family's) savings to go on a rickety boat and risk their lives to come to a place where they ...what? Are given a job and a regular income just like that? No way - a struggle for life is awaiting them.
I read today that about 300 Africans (among them Gambians) were fished out of the sea near Lampedusa, an Italian island near Sicily. They will be put in a 'camp' for some time first, and then what? A job washing dishes in a pizzeria while waiting for the necessary papers that might never arrive? I am sure there are many among these unfortunates that would have preferred to stay at home.

Live within one's means and be happy? (that was a good one, Toubab1020).

I have promised Santafara that i will post my review of this interesting article shortly, but meanwhile let me add to the discussion this old poem of mine.

IMMIGRATION:

KAYJATTA.

They leave home in large numbers
Walls thick, perforated, and debated
Afraid but resolute
Why they leave home is an evolutioary question
I have the genes
She has the paper for a signature

Death lurking in the expanse
Of Arizona , Gibraltar
Where Spain frowns Morocco

Isn't it the best that always leave?
But leaving home is worse than space travel
I have the genes
She has the paper for a signature
Oh , I have my mind too that wouldn't get acknowledged
A vestige of a redundant past.
