In the music industry there is always discussions about different ”Sounds”. That the European Pop-sound is different from American Pop-sound and so fort.
A couple of years back the Swedish sound was very dominant in the music industry because of some prominent producers that produced must of the big names like M. Jackson, B. Spear, Back streets Boys and many more.
Do you hear any difference between the sounds(pop) of Senegal and Gambia, if yes, which one is dominaing the market and why?

To me, senegalese music has a very special sound. I LOVE how those senegalese men dance! The rhythm is very different to reggae style music and I find it almost impossible!!! There are some brilliant music videos on TV of Senegalese dancers and music, it reminds me a bit of bollywood style. Very over the top! But great fun!
Give me Bob Marley and reggae to dance to anytime. The beat is so easy and natural to me. |

gambiabev,
Could it be for the simple reason that you been exposed to the reggae style music longer than the Senegalese music? In that case, just give the Senegalese music some incubation time to hatch into your bloodstream and become part of your nature. |

Yes, you are probably right!
I also love the Kora (?) I went to a bar and listened to a brilliant guy. Also I love the saxaphone and at the cotton club I heard a fantastic saxophonist from Senegal.
In Gambia, if you get out there, there is good music to be found everywhere.
You just need to be open to listen to new things. Open your mind, your heart and your ears!
When I go to Kolior I love the traditional drummers too. They greet us and play the whole time we are in the village. When I get back to Tendaba I usually have to go and lie down in the quiet for a little while to recover from all the excitement!!! |

| Gambia’s Afro-Mandingsound has a big potential to grow as big as the American and English pop-sounds. It is still there like a fertile land that needs cultivation. |

I'm sure Anna won't mind me telling you that she's away on holiday at the moment! Yes, Santa, you can't beat the skirl of the pipes and drums (with or without kilts!) ..... |

gambiabev, Was it Lamin Konte and his kora ensamble that you heard? They are the only group in Senegal combining kora ans sax. Lámin used to play with a band called "WATO SITA". I have one of their cds."KORA KUMA" Avery nice cd to listen to. I would recomend AfroManding and Duma Djulo fro the Gambia. |
