it was a hot day in the sandu district urd .we were coming from school ,suddently we show a mass of people coming towards our village .darsilame is the village .in darsilame ,you have three villages combine into one. you have the mandinka old towm founded by the korings who ran away from kabu the sanyang kunda .the sarahules came there later .the sarahules are divided into two settlement .kaba kamma and taku talla .kabakamma mean east and takutala mean west .
Darsilame also have many little Fula villages surrounding it. we have suma kunda ,pilinke ,sare njenkunde and many other i can not recall by memory.
we enjoy having those illustrous Fula villages .they help the area with cow dum for manure and milk for food ,also cow meat for food. so people help protect the Fula settlements.
not all Fulas but some of them in days gone use to change settlement if some one died in the village .the alkali will relocate.
but other villagers will always welcome a new settlement.
it was among this fula villages that a youny man was getting married to a bride 15 kilometers away . in a village close to saren nkaye .sare nkaye is a famous village .it is a border towm between the Gambia and Senegal .it is interesting because there is also a lumo there .every monday people from all over the place will come with there goods to trade .nice and adictive. the lumo has become so adictive if some one is to die on monday people don't want to stay for burial. yes this is true. i know all that area. from Jarkunda ,kuwonkundin ,fadia kunda ,kulary all that area ,up to touba uppa ,touba kuta and touba koto. the lumo is a day no one like to miss.
coming to the true story of nyaba .Nyaba is a famous lady from Suma kunda where the bride is going.now i may foreget but Fula wedding is one the most entertaing among the many gambian tribes.the wedding will start with a music party before the villagers depart to the brides village. then in the afternoon ,they will start moving to the village of the bride. this takes several hours as other family and friends come from far and wide to join them .then some among the fulas aren't muslims so a bit of wine call konjan in fula is served.the traditional fula musical instrument (susa) is played in different style. we all use to join in ,with swaliing dance. then the group will have several pitstops to rest.
they continues untill they arrive at Darsilame village. at that time many where hungry and to eat is on the top of the list.
so the group choose Nyaba to cook for them .the compound the group took for a short stay use to grine peanuts and grind it into oil .so the group bought oil ,onions and the rest. a cow meat was bought to be cook as a bendachen (traditional wolof cooking ) .so Nyaba said that is the food she will cook .she has all the ingredients ,and Nyaba commence the cooking .she did the cooking very quickly. but the food wasn't well cook and the group start demanding food. nyaba serve them ,they are hungry after lots of dancing and some drinking.
Nyaba obliged .the group ate the food .one can hear from every corner the echo of Nayab waawe bendachen (Nyaba can cook bendachen).
Nyaba was very happy .after all we love a little bit of praise after some efforts .Nyaba was a bit apprehensive ,she knew the bendachen wasn't fully cooked. she was watching and praying that all went well .it didn't went well .
after a short while some started complaining about stomach pain ,then a sudden runing tommy. the group start runing helter skelter. toilet please ,toilet please .the bendachen start to function in negative way.
Nyaba went hidding .the group end up staying in darsilame untill the effects was over ,which happen close to night fall.they proceed any way.
Nyaba was foregiven since it was the group that pressure her into serving them early.
on there return ,the bride will be transported on the shoulder of two men or on a hand hold .this is like two men hold each others hand and the bride will seat on that hand hold .this will be done by several young men untill they arrive at the final destination.
the bride enjoys the jorney ,she is not allow to touch the ground.on arrival ,a big party was held and dance and merry making untill morning.
two things are worth identifying here ,it doesn't mean nyaba can't cook but she was pressured to serve a meal that wasn't fully cooked ,secondly cooking for a group of nearly 50 is not an easy task for any person. some people including myself don't eat big occassion foods ,becaus the food may not be very well cooked.
nyaba's bendachen was a funny occassion and it end up being a good laugh between us and the sumakunda village.

You know what tyhe Fulani call BENACHIN? My fula frined calls it KO LEPPI KO
LEPi in Fulani means something that is wet and therefore BENACHIN being soaked in oil definetely deserves to be called KO LEPPI KO.
You remind me of the NYA RIRU dances after the harvest right around December and the wrestling matches that follow. Around this time there are many weddings and TEDDU NGAL(gifts) are freely shared among neigbors especially in-laws. |

kondo ,you nearly get me swinging .nice times. i use to like weddings .but my own wive refuse taking part in our traditional weddings. funny but i will play an april fool on her. you know in my uncles tradition the bed comes dowm for a new bride. |
