PASTOR SENT TO JAIL FOR 3 YEARS
By Fabakary B. Ceesay

One John Charles Njie, a pastor of the Abiding Word Ministry, was yesterday convicted and sentenced to a mandatory jail term of 3 years with hard labour and without the option of a fine.. He was convicted by the Kanifing Magistrate Court presided over by Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh.

Pastor Njie, who is also a film actor, was convicted on the charges of forgery, contrary to section 332 of the criminal code. The particulars of offence states that Pastor Njie, on the 8 March 2006, at Kanifing forged the signature of one Miss Ellen Sowe and prepared a document to sublet the house which was rented to him by the complainant. The defence counsel, Mr. Joseph Henry Joof, was not in court when Mr. Charles was convicted and sentenced. The complainant’s counsel, Mrs. Amie Joof Conteh, told the court that her client (Miss Sowe) has passed away on last Tuesday, the 3 July 2007.

In his plea of mitigation, Pastor Njie said he is a family man with two children and that the children’s mother is not in the country.

Magistrate Jammeh said he is of the view that the accused person is guilty of the offence preferred against him. He, therefore, sentenced him to three (3) years in jail at mile two prison, without the option of a fine.

May Miss Sowe rest in peace, its a very great pity that the end of her life was maybe hastned by the wrongdoings of Pastor Njie,he will have 3 very difficult years to reflect on his disgrace and pray to his God for forgiveness.I strongly suspect that after his stay at Mile Two he may well decide to spend the rest of his days in prayer with other brother monks, and forsake the world of money and greed .

Bro,
I think it is ok as a warning to others.
His offence is serious. Ripping off people their homes is a crime.
Moreover the pastor (a man of God )should try and make things straight.

I don't think he ripped her off her home , Alhassan. Subletting a rental property is a common practice. Usually the property owner will include a clause in the lease that the property must not be sublet, if that is not the case then the tenant(the person renting the property) in this case Pastor Njie may legitimately sublet the property. However , forgery of Ms. Sowe's signature is a misrepresentation which could be a criminal offence , most likely a misdemeanor.
Therefore , looking at it from that perspective 3 years jail time seems a little excessive notwithstanding the margistrate's discretion . The Pastor may have a relationship of trust with his church memebrs , but unless he has a special fiduciary relation with Ms. Sowe he should not be excessively punished just because he is a pastor.

kayjatta,
I like your name because it reminds me of the Island, but sometimes I cannot understand you. When people commit crimes and get punished you complain that it is too hars. What do you want for him to be freed totally?
As I have observed here in Sweden, it is very easy to commit the same crime because the punishment is very minor compaired to Russia or Poland. Some years ago people came from Russia to Sweden to get themselves in jail because they would have more money after the term than a Russian worker.
Do you want the same thing in Gammbia?
