MARABOUT DAWDA CEESAY IN THE DOCK
By Abdou Jeli Keita

One Dawda Ceesay, a marabout, is standing trial at the Banjul magistrates’ court for allegedly obtaining money by false pretence, contrary to section 285 of the Criminal Code. The trial proceeded with the testimony of the prosecution witness, Abdoulie Corr, an accountant’s clerk at the Banjul City Council (BCC).

In his testimony, the prosecution witness, Abdoulie Corr, told the court that sometime in May 2007, he met one Abdoulie Camara while he was from his place of work and Camara said he was on the way with his master (Dawda Ceesay) with whom he had lost contact with. The witness said he gave him D10 to buy something to eat. He said Camara said he is a “talibe” (student) of a very powerful marabout (Dawda), whom he said would help him, because in his words, “It is very uncommon to come across good people like you.” He said, the “talibe” then took his mobile phone and told Dawda (the accused), what transpired between them and later the accused person told them to meet at Gamtel house in Banjul. While at Gamtel house, he said the accused person (Dawda Ceesay) told him to buy two white sheets of paper, two candles and charcoal. He said the accused then told him to put everything on one white sheet.

According to him, he put everything on the white sheet, ranging from his mobile phone, and wallet containing over D2000 dalasi in the white sheet after which he said, the accused person (Dawda) wrote on the other white sheet and told him to go with his talibe (student) to the mangrove swamps (near Gambia High School) to bathe with the written items. He said while bathing in that place, he heard a strange voice saying “Abdoulie Corr, you have met a very powerful marabout (Dawda), he is one of my representatives in your small world, take bath now! Go on now! You will see changes in your life, I mean positive ones”.

He said the strange voice asked him his age, he said he answered twenty-nine (29), and then the strange voice told him to multiply 29 by D150 and take the sum of money (about D6,000) and two bags of rice, to a school headed by the accused’s (Dawda Ceesay) father at a region in Senegal. He said the said amount is for charity. He said the strange voice then asked him what he wanted in life and he answered, “Knowledge and wealth”. He said the strange voice then said “Surely, you will get knowledge and wealth. Plentiful in supply, but, Abdoulie Corr, your name is in the spirit world and from now on, you must not communicate what transpired between you and the God father of the spirit world. Should you disobey the command from the God father, your family shall cease to exist. I mean they shall die one by one”.

The prosecution witness (Abdoulie Corr) said, he was frightened by this terrifying voice. He said the strange voice asked if he was ever told to give an animal with four legs as charity and he answered yes. He said the strange voice told him to do that now.
He said days after, the accused (Dawda) told him to go back to the same place and take bath. Whilst at the place, he said, his talibe (student) told him to pray two “Raka,” after which the strange voice appeared once again and said, a special prayer had been done for him at ‘KARBALAH’ (a place of worship in Iraq) last night.

One week later, he said, the accused told him to give him D50, 000, after which he would make him a millionaire with the power of the spirit world’s God Father. He said he told Dawda that he does not have such a huge sum of money; that he had only D28, 000. He said, he gave D28, 000 to the accused (Dawda) and still he is neither a millionaire nor did he get his money back.

When asked if he has anything to contradict what the prosecution witness said, the accused (Dawda Ceesay) said he has nothing to say. The trial is adjourned to a later date in July.

HE SHOULD BE LOCKED UP .he was using deception and nothing else. as omar bun puts it ''let them get out and work like every other person instead of lying '' .

I am flabbergasted that such people still exist in The Gambia. I mean abdoulie Corr's type. How can someone be so naive. If the marabout could make him a millionaire overnight, why isn't the marabout a millionaire himself?

Now and then, stories came up about strange voices and appearances in Sanimentereng and other sacred places. I have always taken that to be story telling and could not imagin Mr Corr who is expected to master the simple rule of Debit and Credit allows himself part such bulk of money without proper records. Where Marabout Ceesay is punished, Corr deserves punishment too.

Karamba you sound funny. How can corr be punished as the plaintiff? Even in Serahuleh tribunal i dnt think both plaintiff and defendant could be punished

On a more serious note, places like Sannehmentereng , Kamalo, Folongko and kachikali have been known as sacred places for many, many yrs. Until now no quacks are able to beat the traditional custodians with dirty tricks. Some senegalese tried that at Gunjur, where Sheikh Omar Futi Taal is reported to have stayed during one of many of his travels, which is known as the KEH-NYEH-KEH-NYEH JAMANGO(THE SANDY MOSQUE) by calling to be a descendant of the venerable sheikh. This quack lived at the mosque and collected monies and alms from unsuspecting visitors. However wen the custodians of the place knew abt this quack, it took them a winker and this man was sent away for good. People must be vigilant at all times. The travellers of fortunes are common in our Senegambia region due to peoples gullibility.

Madiba,

You really got the joke of it. I was in serious laughter as I recall the many incidence where grown ups have been duped day and night by con men. There was this one about another money doubler. He poured the spirit water on the bushy hair of his victims and asked them not to open the magic box until their hair got dry. Guess how long it takes water to drain from long bushy hair. By the time it could happen, he was gone. There is lot of fun to it. I did not seriously mean to have Mr Corr caned for being victimised.

Dawda should be punished for being part of the process of a deceitful means to earn money against standard economic practice. By being willing to earn money not worked for, he has aided an illiegal venture and hence culpable too.

What a funny story! If the judgde can be a 'Solomon' this is what he should do: expose the marabout as a cheater (tv, radio, posters etc) and oblige him to pay back half of the money. The other half is Mr Corr's 'fine'for being so gullible and greedy (clearly he is not too poor, why would he want to be a millionaire). Strange voice? Let them explain! Was the 'talibe' hiding in the mangroves with a megaphone?

I don't see why the man (Dawda) should be punished, Abdoulie should be the one to blame for his losy mind.

The Jinns (Jinne Musa, Jammeh Musa) of Kanilai are blood thirsty. Tradition has it that idols (locally known as Jalang) quench on raw blood. To activate Jalang, you are urged to slaughter a living creature, usually a cock, ram, bull or bush pig. If now Kanilai is opening a Blood Bank, is that part of the deal to quench the Jalang for keeping the Magic Stick activated? What is not deceptive marabout work in Jammeh's AIDS cure therapy?

The case is totally weak against the Marabout as hearsay, lack of proper witnesses, evidences for e.g written documentations etc. It is Abdoulie Corr who should be in the dock as a Public Servant. There should be CRIMINAL investigation for that substantial amount (D25,000) and all his ASSETS. Then later PROSECUTED for FRAUD; i.e aidding and abbetting, high degree scheming and engaging in scam as a CIVIL SERVANT or in Public Office.
