My advice would be to forget about Bijilo for the fact that the asking price of properties there is beyond ridiculous! Can you imagine a quote of $25,000 for a plot of land two years ago?! Yep, that was the quote I received for a plot in Bijilo in 2005. I thought such quotes were for "toubabs", but apparently diasporan Gambians are not spared. It makes me wonder what some of these folks smoke when they wake up .
Anyway, I ended up shelving the idea of buying land until my last visit (in April) when I got a reasonably-priced nice piece of land in Batokunku. My advice would be to look for a place in batokunku or Tujereng...they may be a bit "far" from the Senegambia area, but that has its benefits; no bumsters, relatives dropping by unannounced etc. Aviod Sanyang...way too expensive! I saw a nice place there last month, but the owner was asking $25,000. I did not even bother to bargain!

Thanks Romou, i already got to Youna, and Jabang, but won like nearby senegambia again, someone told me one at Bijilo, but was about D350,000 and was not big as i'm looking, if i got 35x35, then will be ok for me. whatever thanks for yr advice, kisses |

DO NOT DEAL WITH THE AL-KALO'S "SON" AT YOUNA. HE IS A CONMAN! we went there xmas to see some land. that road will be impassable in the rainy season. there is no water/sewage or power.
worst of all we found out that this guy sells the land and then re-sells it! he does not know if it is leasehold or freehold and he is not the son of the current alkalo.
he quoted us something like 75000D for 50x 40- nice price, and then added on the same again for walling it off.
we did some snooping and found out he is well known for duping people - and this he tried to do to my gambian wife!
check everthing out carefully and get a good solicitor.

| along the coastal road, just past sheraton hotel, silly prices and promises, something line £80,000 for a 20 x 20 metres. i did not investigate anything, when i am ready i willtravel with a bag of cash and buy what i can. the next areas are the government areas of yundum where people bought the land and are now selling it between the airport and turntable. |

| Eve, I invested in some land at Tanji about 3 years ago. The idea was to develop it gradually when I had the money. At the moment i have a two metre wall around it. The ground is cleared every year. There are ten mango trees on the plot. What is stopping me now is the price of cement. My Gambian friend does not think the current price of 285/290 Dalasi will come down much. If things have not eased up by December when I visit I will be forced to sell it. I have a price in mind which will not change by next year. From the prices that people are seeing anyone with land is out to make a killing whether they sell it to Europeans or Gambians.There is still cheap land to be had. Last year I was offered a 100x100 metre piece of land at Old Yundum for 200,000 Dalasi.Ramou is right. Bijilo is a no go. Even in 2003 a 60 x 60 metre plot of land in Bijilo which needed clearing was offered to me for 300,000 Dalasi. Buying already contructed properties such as those at Brufut is like paying European prices. And definately get good legal advice when buying. |

My accountant said to me not to invest in Gambia what I couldnt afford to lose. I thought he was very pessimistic. Now I understand. So many corrupt people trying to make a quick buck!
I am selling my house and downsizing. Originally I was thinking of using some of that money in Gambia, but every penny is tied up in the purchase of my new house in UK. It is so expensive here. |
