this information was given to me by a bantaba member, in response to the question of bank holidays that are recognised in the gambia.
So there are only two religious holidays in gambia, do they only last one day.
mansasulu, as for the quote, "ask someone who know better" better than what. Which dates would you like recognised in Gambia that are not recognised now.

This debate is not about recognising "holidays." Dont you get it. Let me enlighten you a little bit and please open up you mind just for 20 seconds...I was trying to make a point that we cannot call our selves secular and yet still be heavily loaded with holidays not secular.

"...Verily, in the remembrance of Allâh do hearts find rest..." Sura Al-Rad (Chapter 13, Verse 28)

Jambo, only two of those dates you mentioned are "holidays" in gambia: Eid ul Fitr and Eid ul Adha, ask people who know better.

Alhassan implementing Shariah is not a matter of opinion. It is a commandment from Allah that we should be obeying. The fact of the matter is that Allah has commanded all of us, I am trying to do my part and I suggest you try as well.

Sorry, I didn't forget, didn't think anyone would be interested. It was for robbery allegedly, no one was fortunately killed, they were also not allowed any representation at their trial according to the Human Rights organization. After beheading, 4 actually, the bodies were hung in the streets for people to see as a deterrent. That would work for me! That brings to 17 the amount beheaded this year, compared to 38 for 2006. Once again this is compared to another country as a way to make it seem ok, for me any death penalty is NOT ok. The people were Sri Lankan migrant workers, who make up a large percentage of the workforce.I have read that Qatar, Yemen and northern Nigeria practise Sharia, I'm sure I will be correct if misinformed.

Mansasulu, I did as I was told and checked my facts. Amnesty International has posted figures for 2005 as follows;China 1770, though could be up to 8000, Iran 94, Saudi Arabia 86, though could be more, and USA 60.
Also interestingly the Gambia retains the death penalty for crimes such as murder, but is considered 'abolitionist in practise' as it has not executed anyone in the last 10 years and are believed to have a policy or established practise not to carry out executions. Thank you Mansasulu for telling me check my facts, alot of us tend to post without doing this.
