Does anyone know any Gambian Citizens living in China or Dubai? I may very well try to order at least one of the commodities afforementioned to help bring the price down for the average Gambian. I need names and contact info if possible. Please reply to badoul@yahoo.com.

Its a suprise that one leg of chicken is more than the daily wage of some Government employes. They would have to work for a second day to be able to buy a leg of chicken.

Kondorong-are you insinuating that the Gambia Chamber of Commerce would have contacts for Gambia Nationals living in Dubai and China? Instead,I think that GCC would rather be of great assistance with trade related information. My goal is to partnership with a Gambian in either of the two countries.

Thats part of their TOR. They could advise you of legitimate Gambians doing business in these countries and send goods to gambia. They should have a database on that. Trust me. They can help you.

Thanks Kondorong for your swift response. I have sent out an e-mail to GCCI and I will followup with a phone call tomorrow morning.

Does anyone have other ideas.

The only problem is having a willing Gambian with matching capital for investment. I was at the Chamber of Commerce a while ago and you will be suprised how Gambians do business. In many cases Gambians finance a big businessman's trip by giving him money upfront so that when his imports come, he would supply them. They end up paying for all the imports with the the "Big" man just riding on their backs and then dictate the prices he would sell to them even though they actually financed his whole trip. This way, they dont even need bank loans because free money flows in easily.

This is how some businessmen have maintained an alomost monopoly in the supply of certain goods. Many shops at retail level are opened but they are all supplied from one point effectively killing competition.

They dont actually know this because they individually "chip in" in advance to ensure they get supplied. A very easy way of getting financed with someone else's money and then take credit for the import when in actual fact individual and disorganised business men paid for the trip.

Kondorong-I could not agree with you more. Each year, I travel to the Gambia to visit family members and also scout out ways to contribute to the country's socio-economic development. One thing that I have consistently experience is that people do not share info easily for the betterment of the Gambia populace. Also, many of us who own businesses outside the Gambia's shores are kind of hesitant to invest back home. I have repeated heed to the calling of President Jammeh for Gambians to invest back home, however, the fact still remains that we have a monolistic market atmosphere in The Gambia and those in privilege positions are less eager to assist. Infact they would try exploiting you which I find disturbing.

Why don't they rare chicken at home , which are more delicious atleast to me? How many of us engage ourselves in small scale farming at home to make for the shortfalls.

When i was in The Gambia, most if not all the vegies we ate at home are from my compound in the kombos. During the rains, i cultivated Maize, sweet potato, locust beans, pumpkin, okra, bitter tomato, sorrel(kucha) in mandinka, follehreh (fula), beezap(wolof), pepper ect. That supplemented my fish money greatly. During the dry season, i do lettuce, tomato, sorrel using the well i dug there.

When i finish my business here, I plan to turn it into a full fledge farm where in addition to horticulture , i intend to raise livestock.

Madiba-Are you talking about cultivating your own food for consumption, for sale or both?

Your scheme is laudable but please take good note of what others have said on Bantaba before you go ahead,I suspect that you are being carried along too quickly by the waves of enthusiam that has developed in your mind.

Concort,

Initially for consumption and in the long term would be looking into sale. I by nature like eating fresh. The reason could be i partly grew up in the provinces were most often then, only oil and other imported stuff are bought in the market. The other ingredients and fruits are readily available in the backyard or 'Faroes'.
