Madiba, this is the same as it was in uk until about 20 or 30 years ago. People had their own vegetable patches or allotments and they also had chickens or ducks or pigs as 'pets' to rear to eat. In the world wars this is how people survived and they passed on the skills to their children. Then it died out as people got more affluent and went to supermarkets. Now people are beginning to realise the health benefits of fresh home grown produce and the health benefits of doing the producing. All that digging in the fresh air is better than the gym! And cheaper!
