I've just spoken to a Gambian friend that I had sent money to. It was waiting for him at a bank in Serrekunda today. He told me that it was impossible to access the bank - big queues, lots of arguments and that the banks said they didn't have enough money for the people waiting.
Is there a post election problem - or just a problem?
Can anyone shed light on this for me - PLEASE?

If you want to transfer money western union are good and Bayba express are excellent. Bayba can do same day transfers.
Or if none of these are suitable, you need a bank account at the trust bank. Then anyone wanting to help you can send monet direct. It CAN take 5 working days. But is often shorter. |

Was it bank or a money transfer agent? I can't imagine a bank running out of cash, besides today was a public holiday or bank holiday in The Gambia. |

Thanks - must be due to the bank holiday then. Friend said that there were long queues and lots of arguments. Still, he will return tomorrow: money is already transferred and waiting |

hi there lily, it was a combination of events, two days election campaigns, half day cleaning on saturday, half holiday on monday and a holday on tuesday, it was just hard to even get into the bank. blame bad planning on the government, i transferred money by bayba last week, my contact could not pick it up until today. money is there. this does not help when you are planning a business, my money was to pay custom fees and transfer my goods to different places because of the delays nothing has happened. it would be interesting if someone coul ddo a time and motion study and see just how much bank holidays that are called at short notice cost the country.

Jambo and Sab Many thanks for your responses. I'll call again tonight and I'm sure that everything will be fine!
Sab - Eid Al-Adha seems to be so early this year. I do understand about the lunar calendar but I don't understand why Eid can fall with almost 3 months (perhaps 4) months difference. I think tobaski was in March in 2001/2.
I think this probably means I need to read up more - I thought lunar cycles were monthly so could understand a difference of 28 days (or so).
Anyway, thanks both! |

Lily, to know when Tobaski will be you can just deduct 11 days from the last known date. This (last) year Tobaski was on 31 December, so it figures that in 2007 it will be on 20/12, and you can safely note in your diary for 2008 that it will be on 9/12 (give or take one day at the most, it could be on 8/12). So, there were about 45 days between Tobaski in 2001 and Tobaski in 2006 - it could have been second half of February. But, even if you have Sab's calendar - it's the 'unexpected', announced by the government at very short notice, bank holidays because of elections or whatever (or like with the elections last September, the schools starting about three weeks late!) |
