Regarding my last thread on the above subject of consensual sex which was viewed by nealy one thousand people. It appears no one knows or could answer my questions
1/ What is the legal age of consent in Gambia 2/ Are you commiting an offence if the person is a student even up to the age of 22
I have now seen the above law and can not find any reference to the actual age of consent all though it is believed to be 16.
1/ Under section 2 (1) it difines a child as follows I Quote "child" means a person under the age of 18. So I think one can assume the age of consensual sex in Gambia is 18
2/ There is no reference in the law that it is offence at up to the age of 22 if they are a student and have consensual sex. This appears without foundation and to be a mith

TISME , i did not want to say any thing to this topic but your persistence warrant some kind of reply. i for one will not be bothering about an age of concent if want to get married because i will build up a relationship with fully matured person who is able to make an independent decision by herself. this person will not be a high school student . this person will be over 18 years . and certainly our relationship will be fully within the allowable norms of an islamic society. i mean before any relationship we most be married first . she most know the her rights and obligations .
Surah- Ar-Rum 30-22 "And among His signs is the creation of heavens and the earth, and the difference of your languages and colours. verily, in that are indeed signs for men of sound knowledge." Qu'ran

However Parental consent governing consenual sex is a stronger force within Gambian society than the law. Sex outside of marriage is not generally tolerated especially for females even though cases do happen but they are discouraged and frowned upon.

Thank you for your reply I am a young person and I think I would sooner be persistant and find things out than end up with a crimminal record or go to jail because of my ignorance of the law. It is said that with knowledge you gain wisdom. So yes I am now wiser as I now know the law
TISME To be safe in Gambia, you need the families blessing. Age doesnt always matter so much. But if you do things behind the families back and without their blessing then you could have some trouble, especially if unwanted babies come along!
My advice would be as follows: 1. NEVER abuse a position of power. 2. To keep the age range small if the girl is young. I have a 17 year old daughter, I wouldnt want her to see a boy over 20. When she is 20 and an adult then it is her choice. 10 years plus or minus is ok once you are over teenage years.15 years plus or minus once you are over 30. Any more than that it could be your child or your parent. YULK!!!
Obviously for the sake of your other half it is best if you get on with their family. You need to spend time with them and get to know them, so they trust you.
You need to be responsible and use contraception. ALWAYS. Until you are married and settled and really KNOW you want children.
