| I read with utter dismay and disbelief the claim by President Yayah Jammeh that he has got a mandate to cure HIV and Asthma. I have always suspected that the President has a sort of problem, but this present claim that is endorsed by the country's health minister, is a disgrace not only to Jammeh and his ruling APRC, but to the nation of The Gambia and the African continent as a whole. No matter what anyone may think of Jammeh, he is still the president of this noble country and people may wonder whatever motivates a country to vote for such an *****. I am really very angry. If only this dimwit knew how many of our African brothers are suffering from this devastating disease, he will not use it as a way to display his ignorance and backwardness. Why is this joke still president? Only God and Gambians know. He will better serve his people by just closing his big mouth, going back to his village and finding a cure to the power drunk madness that he has developed. Are the sane people around him advising him or are they afraid of losing their jobs. God, what an *****. |

| And also very worrying is that many many Gambians believe him - they've seen it with their own eyes on television!!! I was truly surprised at how little people here know of the disease, there is a need for some serious and truthful information to be given out. |

First the Lord Jesus cured souls and bodies and did not jail anyone. Then Saul the tax collector repented and became Paul the great disciple, so would our man do the same?
Second, Hugo Chavez has done a lot to improve the plight of the poor and underprivileged in Venezuela giving them the nation's wealth and health and not just to the privileged elite. He has no craze for money and he has done what he promised to do, today the future belongs to the masses. Chavez has in many ways started a new kind of revolution in South America bringing along a new kind of leadership much closer to the people, something never seen hiterto there.
Jah's peace and good health to all,
Son of Haileh.
Third I can understand when a doctor becomes president, but when it's the opposite.....well I don't know, for the benefit of the doubt let's wait and see what happens in the near future. |

There is no evidence that the president of Gambia is seeking the same extensive powers as Chavez: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6315819.stm
Yahya Jammeh does not rule by decree and is also very popular with his people – and sufficiently concerned to pray - in good faith - to the Almighty to heal those who suffer from HIV /Aids. Now you may be more sceptical than an atheist but if the president’s prayers are answered why should anyone grudge him that?
http://www.carm.org/kjv/Psalms/Psalm_134.htm
As a former soldier one thing is certain about your president: He is disciplined – a quality that is lacking in many leaders. He is also brave – another quality. Think of the prophet of Islam , even as you cultivate Jesus as role model.
Interestingly,
Towards the end of this week’s Torah Portion occurs this sentence: Exodus 17:13 “Joshua weakened Amalek and its people with the sword’s blade” (and spontaneously I thought about Ali – alaihi salaam in connection with the Moses-Aaron hadith etc etc- it’s all very clear.)
Anyway since you mention Jesus, said to be “King of the Jews“ in certain quarters, here goes: My Chumash notes read: “Joshua weakened” – He weakened them by killing their stronger warriors. That he spared the others must have been at the command of God, for it was surely in his power to kill the weaker ones once the mightiest had been vanquished. ( Rashi, Gur Aryeh) Since Amalek represented the essence of evil and the time had not yet come to remove it from the world, God did not permit Joshua to do so. Thus in the next verse God pledges to exterminate Amalek in some indefinite time in the future, but not yet. R’Bachya explains that God does not interfere with the normal course of destiny, unless it is unavoidable. To save Israel at the moment it was necessary to weaken, not destroy Amalek.
Exodus 17:14-15: “Hashem said to Moses:” Write this as a remembrance in the Book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I shall surely erase the memory of Amalek from under the heavens.”
Now read this note carefully, all Jesus fans: “Rambam and Rabbi Bachya explain the plain meaning of the verse as a reference to Jewish Kings. As long as a Jew’s “hand”, i.e. power is on the royal throne, he must carry on God’s war against Amalek. Thus as soon as Saul became king, he was commanded to wage total war against Amalek, and because he failed to carry out his charge, he was stripped of his throne.” (1 Samuel 15:14-27)
Q: Is the Gambian president the only healer in the world? DO you think so?

| Jammeh's claims were discussed on BBC Radio 4 Today Programme - review of the week - this morning. The claim wasn't taken seriously. The implications of it were. |

Many people around the world are now running the story about aids in the Gambia. The effects are touching lots of different areas.
1. If you have Aids go to Gambia to get cured. Gambia doesn't need lots of people with Aids flocking in, thats a disaster waiting to happen. 2.If you are a tourist don't get sick in Gambia. If the secretary of state and the top doctors at the main teaching hospital support this alleged cure, what sort of Doctors are they !!! 3.The EU are now starting to ask, why are we giving Aid and help to a regime that makes these claims. What will happens to the Money.!!!
Look at what is happening with tourism now, things can only get worse Check all the holiday companies european websites and see the special offers. Lots of empty aircraft. I hope and pray that the voice of reason speak up soon to save our beloved country. Tom
Is there any evidence that the price has gone down and special offers are available because of that BBC article?
I shouldn't think so.
Why down? Because there is a stampede to fly to Banjul to obtain a cure, Doc? Please explain, kindly explain your self !!!!!!!!
Do they expect the president to spend all his time attending to them?
The Gambia is not more seriously hit by AIDS than many countries in Southern Africa, East Africa, central Africa and some of West Africa, probably because Islamic morality does not promote the kind of promsicuity that is to be found in the more alcohol and beer drinking belt of Africa.
A good Nigeria website that also carries the Gambian aids cure story.
http://www.nigeriannews.com/
Of course tourists have their share in alcoholising the almost once teetotaller culture of the Gambia ( give and take the 10% Christians who are used to imbibing the traditional holy wine & church bread)
Certainly the £-Sterling is strong and the price of the usual special deals at this time of the year( winter) has not gone down because of any news about a possible aids cure. These are advertising stunts... as usual
Special offers for flights to the Gambia http://www.google.se/search?hl=sv&q=special+offers+flights+to+the+Gambia&btnG=S%C3%B6k&meta=
“Many people around the world are now running the story about aids in the Gambia.” - Is possibly not an exaggeration since the BBC headlines which were bound to come sooner than later, is/are sensational – at the same time the dementi or “condemnation” from South Africa should signal sufficient caution if not outright deterrence to those who might be in the death throes of the HIV virus taking the first available fligt to Banjul.
“The effects are touching lots of different areas.” – Vague enough and wide open for unbridled fantasy to fill in…..
But what is alarming – should it turn out to be true is this type of banner being held high as the special main attraction for the main special offer to fly to the Gambia: “If you have Aids go to Gambia to get cured.” And moreover we know that the president is not yet announcing that he is doing it on a commercial basis – most of those responding positively to his treatment are Muslims – so far - and that does for the time being seem to be a pre-condition………
It is not that he is performing like traditional evangelical faith healers who fill whole stadiums and heal the masses with as little as a tender touch……
However should hope and fantasy take special-offer flights to the Gambia ( planeload after planeload of tourist charter flights filled with HIV infected and those dying of AIDS, arriving for the quick fix) does Dr. Thomas propose that some screening take place at the airport before such tourists get to town and lose self-control – tempted by available ( and irresistible) sexual possibilities which the good president has been trying to clamp down on in the Gambia (by criminalising prostitution, and the speardinbg of the epidemic)
Thabo Mkeki was in the hot waters for years, after he said that it was poverty, underdevelopment and lack of potable water that was a more important battle to be fought etc
http://www.aegis.com/news/dmg/2000/MG000411.html
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=Thabo+Mbeki+and+the+AIDS+controversy&spell=1
In response to all this what seems to me quite sensible (reasonable) and not at all alarmist posting from Dr. Thomas, the Gambian Government should make a measured response, cautionary in tone and insistent that work is still in progress and so far there has been no scientifically verifiable conclusion other than that patients are gaining weight and apparently on the way to better health and God willing, to a fuller recovery.
As to the quality of the Gambian and Taiwanese doctors, there is no doubt that they are qualified and are only reporting what they observe.
The WHO and EU and other organs have no reason to cease their financial and scientific – humanitarian support for the campaign against aids.
Here is a useful website: http://www.aidstruth.org/ http://www.virusmyth.net/aids/news/mbeki.htm
