Some conversations that I have had in the past with Gambian men who live in England keep saying that they are allowed to take up to 3 more wives as it is law in the islamic religon. If that is fact and what they believe then I dont have a problem with them believing this BUT what I say is it states that if they can spend their time equally and provide for them equally. My question is "If a man lives in England 50 weeks of the year and spends 2 weeks in Gambia, and he has a wife in both countries, HOW is that spending time equally as it states in the Quaran.
Sister, To answer your question, the man is not doing according to the Quaran. He has interpreted the vers wrong. I would say he is doing as he feels. What does the wife in the Gambia say about this? Has she not demanded more? It is up to her to accept it or not in this case. I would recomed her to contact the Khali where she lives. |

This man is making a mockery of Islam my understanding of Shia law is a man is only suppose to leave his wife for three days otherwise he takes her with him. How can a man leave his wife for 50 weeks in a year she is better of divorcing him for dessertion.

Although the Khadi could mitigate in a marriage, there is nothing preventing any one from taking a legal recourse based on the English law. Although Sharia is recognised in some cases, its not the Supreme Law and therefore if one is not satisfied with a judgement by a Khadi, one can resort to the courts.
Even in the area of inheritance, it is not compulory that an estate should be divided on shariah. You can choose to do differently. |

Janky well the Gambian wife seems to have no problem with the situation. As long as she is satisfied and her husband is financially supporting her and her child then the arrangements suites those involved. It may not seem as an ideal situation to outsiders but it seems to work for them.
