There is only one answer for GAMBIANS to think of themselves as GAMBIANS first and foremost, not as members of a particular TRIBE,that day will never come.
My comments about "Ethnic Units" were not to be taken seriously, but your clarification of that expression was very good I applaud you!

Compatriots,

All said well about the dark seal that Foni happened to find itself today, i.e the unopposed seats. Being a proud native of the area, i cannot let this topic sleep without adding my few lines to it.

To be an opposition in Foni is a risky business, just like the many other places in the Gambia. This excuse may be seen weak, but actually the whole truth. Gambians must be hardened about political struggle, the ability to have unshakeable principles, no matter what.

For one, the people of Foni are known to be very loyal to leaders. It was similar to the catastrophic era of the old man that gave birth to this rotten system called hazardous tyranny. While Gambian awareness level contributed greatly to this sitation, the iron fist governing by a man who came from the area constitutes more. One who doesn't spare his close aides and family members, won't be close to allowing others especially those that would challenge his arrogance and bigottry.

Knowing the area well, an opposition will do well in some of the areas, but people might be scared to live with the aftermath of being an opposition. I have no desire for leadership, and if i did and was there, nothing would have stopped me from supporting an independent candidate.

My blame won't be on the opposition. It won't be on the people of Foni, just like i won't put the blame on the entire Gambian populace. I blame "misfortune" and "level of political awareness."

We can surely hold the necks of the opposition for not uniting once more, which reveals excessive desire for power and greed connected to dividing sentiments.

Note: The Jolas of Foni are peaceful. Jammeh's ascend to power gave birth to a situation hard to explain. His loyalists (It don't matter whether you are Jola, Mandinka, Fula , Wollof, et cetera) dinned on the same table with the devil, so their hearts and minds are obviously of the devil's cast. There is also great deal of complexity. The Jolas then felt isolated (inferior), and now in revenge feels superior.

It's a lot of lessons to learn from Gambia's ongoing era. I see Gambians as nice people, but we won't stop supporting people because they are related to us. Instead of supporting people because of capability, dedication, good morale, political awareness, we will support people because they are from the same area with us, or because they are our family members, or because they helped us with jobs, money or other worldly material. This is where the sickness started. The sickness is widespread, and a lot of people are affected with this virus, unfortunately. Now to fight this and raise the level of tolerance and acceptance, we need to turn that **** off, and plant in awareness, which is why it is good to be in forums, newspapers, bloggs, et cetera to listen, read, write and cultivate your mental faculty.

The sad creeping pla, Sentimental division, succeeded in growing so tall with canopies that now to fight it will require a reform of many supposedly respected individuals in our Gambian society, when their order of the day is only to rot a society that was supposed to be decent and democratic.

It comes back to redemption. True redemption!! Surely the comforter to come (if any) is way over due.

Very soon, we will welcome to our parliament another bunch of lazy law makers, selfish, human worshippers, lacking in political education and those that will sink more than already has been, the ship of the state. They will vote in laws that will deny them "veto" powers, and "vote" power.

Sad!! Sad!! Sad!! Isn't it??

I rest my case!!

DALTON. it is good of you to clarify the foni situation. my gran mother always quote an old saying '' an old man standing in a dark room see's himself even if no one see him''. we need to analyse foni as a seprate unit here so as not to comfuse it with other constituencies. i believe that some one would have been willing to contest on an oppossion ticket but may have heard some fears as bro-dalton puts it. politics is a dangerous game ,so people naturally weight the option .we cannot eliminate tribal politics for now,so let us try to gradually do away with it. if not us may be our children can eliminate it.
i have the experience of talking direct with people about tribal problems but many denied that they have the problem. it is like an alcaholic,he never accept he/she is one. in europe it is class difference but our own is different. we are unique in the sense that we have different languages within a small band of land. this is not bad only we need to try our best to accept each other.may Allah guide us to more tolerance of each other and make us see good in each other.

I think we are being unfair to the opposition as well as understating the Foni situation. This has very little to do with tribalism but much rather anarchy and tyranny imposed on the people of Foni by an evil son of foni, in the person of the president himself. I don't know any area that suffered so much abuse, terror and humiliation than the people of Foni since the ascent of Jammeh to the presidency in 1994. Even predominantly mandinka areas are living in paradise compared to to the people of foni.

Where in the Gambia have any people been publicly branded witches who take pleasure in devouring their own sons and daughters by the president of the nation? It is happening to the people of foni. If one was to compare the political prisoner population of all prisons in the Gambia with the number of prisoner heads per geographical areas in the Gambia, you be surprised that biggest percentage does not come from the Badibous, kiangs, fulladus or saloums but from the Fonis. Being an opposition to Jammeh in the Fonis amounts to being being a witch as well as your family. It also means government agents can in dark clothes and masks can whisk you and your family away in the middle of the night and thrown in a dark, nasty and mosquito infested cell for alledged crimes ranging from conspiracy against the state to witchcraftcy and detained incommunicado. For some kind of twisted fantasy Jammeh seems to think he own the people of Foni.

Now the big question is who in their right mind is mad enough to declare himself or herself an opposition candidate in such a dangerous political climate? The opposition would be lucky to get a cow to represent them much more a human being. The people of Foni don't vote for APRC because they are tribalist but because they are the most politically intimidated and subdued people in the Gambia. The fact that they being demonised by one of Foni's sons make their plight even more sorrier.

This one puts it all in one basket. Foni is then the most traumatised area in the whole Gambia. That is serious. Many MPs in Foni don't worth the salt. These are people who could never have dreamt of being Badge Messengers if things where on the right order. Now that the truth about Foni is coming clearer, rest of Gambia will not be fair to watch the situation grow any worse. This is beyond tribal cohesion. Let other regions play the reverse.

The game that Jammeh and APRC have chosen to play is putting forward candidates with prosepects of winning no matter which party they represent. These are the candidates betraying whole Gambian masses. They could have reserved it for better times. When things change, some of them will regret it for life.

Bro Shaka,
thanks for a wonderful observation. I very well share in totality your sentiments, for it is a confirmed fact-traumatized during Jawara's regime and traumatized now under a spiteful person, in the likes of Jammeh.
