One way the rest of Gambia can teach a Jola minority or shall we say the Jammeh/APRC association is by coming together. It is not late. For more than ten (10)years the country slid into the wrong hands. Jammeh's rule is not about Jolas or Foni ruling Gambia. Jolas don't have exclusive ownership of Foni. Foni too is not the God blessed best place to keep this monopoly. Now that it is clear as anything the way Jolas or narrow-visioned natives of Foni take it as heroism to keep the presidential seat, the rest of Gambia can change this. Let us not glamorise the sentiments of ethnicity. Yes, we know there exists ethnic disagreements, that is not helping this new equation of things. Let all people and regions of Gambia come together to say no to this narrow sentimentalism of Foni ruling Gambia. There are many progressive intellectuals and even ordinary natives of Foni including Jolas who will sing along in this slogan. It is a shame to you all when on each passing day you are unable to deliver at least one person from the devil's trap. There are more intelligent and more progressive persons who hate to see things this way. Now is the time to translate that all into effective change. It is no secret that Jammeh and his few associates think and act as that they are fooling the rest of Gambians. After sweeping this untenable system, genuine politicians become freer to compete among themselves. For now, the narrow concept of Foni/Jolas ruling Gambia has to die proper. It is an insult to all progressive Jolas, Fula, Mandinka Manjago, and other ethnic units of Foni. There is no doubt that the number wishing to do away with this way of things is larger than those who perpetuate and enjoy it. Move the motion and now goes the slogan: ALL PROGRESSIVE GAMBIANS STAND TOGETHER TO UNDO THE POLITICS OF DOMINATION. During the previous government, Jolas or people of Foni have not been marginalised the way the retrogressive forces of APRC want to play on Gambians. If you can pass this message to the next person, that is enough to bring the change we all desire. There are people of diverse ethnic groups enjoying and there fellow same ethnic members suffering. There are Wollof, Fula, Mandinka, Jola, Manjgo, Serrer and so on who are enjoying. In the same way, others of the same ethnicity are suffering including many Jolas in Foni itself. Open your eyes and see. When you see, take the right step. |

The whole of your posting appears to be over the top,or were you just trying to get a debate going?

An Ethnic Unit is a like a Currency Unit. A unit of currency is ONE part of a currency. In Gambia DALASI is a unit of currency embracing the Butut. To distinguish Dalasi and Butut, Dalasi becomes a unit, Butut becomes a different unit. It is in that context that you are able to unitise ethnicity in Gambia or elsewhere in the world. Jola is by this understanding one UNIT of ethnicity. Mandinka, Fula, Serrer are separate ethnic units.
That apart, what is your contribution to the promotion of a UNITED GAMBIA AGAINST DOMINATION as spelt in the text? I would imagine you have some energy to contribute on that ideal. If you have any further queries, feel free to bounce the ball back to court. Let's move on. |

May be you have not read my posting well. I said that it started as far back as 1951 and was more visible up to 1966 after the failed republican referendum. Certainly 1951 is not new.
Those times were more violent when peoples homes were burnt to the ground. At least not now even though oppositions cannot stand in some regions of the country.
Are you trying to pull my leg. I dont fall for Fulani tricks. The Sarahule man knows your tricks.
Konds, You said you don't fall to Fulani tricks. You just fall and bite the dust by answering an unexposed complex question; cos i didn't know that the problem lived since the fifties. Fulas are gifted with more grey matters |

Compatriots,
All said well about the dark seal that Foni happened to find itself today, i.e the unopposed seats. Being a proud native of the area, i cannot let this topic sleep without adding my few lines to it.
To be an opposition in Foni is a risky business, just like the many other places in the Gambia. This excuse may be seen weak, but actually the whole truth. Gambians must be hardened about political struggle, the ability to have unshakeable principles, no matter what.
For one, the people of Foni are known to be very loyal to leaders. It was similar to the catastrophic era of the old man that gave birth to this rotten system called hazardous tyranny. While Gambian awareness level contributed greatly to this sitation, the iron fist governing by a man who came from the area constitutes more. One who doesn't spare his close aides and family members, won't be close to allowing others especially those that would challenge his arrogance and bigottry.
Knowing the area well, an opposition will do well in some of the areas, but people might be scared to live with the aftermath of being an opposition. I have no desire for leadership, and if i did and was there, nothing would have stopped me from supporting an independent candidate.
My blame won't be on the opposition. It won't be on the people of Foni, just like i won't put the blame on the entire Gambian populace. I blame "misfortune" and "level of political awareness."
We can surely hold the necks of the opposition for not uniting once more, which reveals excessive desire for power and greed connected to dividing sentiments.
Note: The Jolas of Foni are peaceful. Jammeh's ascend to power gave birth to a situation hard to explain. His loyalists (It don't matter whether you are Jola, Mandinka, Fula , Wollof, et cetera) dinned on the same table with the devil, so their hearts and minds are obviously of the devil's cast. There is also great deal of complexity. The Jolas then felt isolated (inferior), and now in revenge feels superior.
It's a lot of lessons to learn from Gambia's ongoing era. I see Gambians as nice people, but we won't stop supporting people because they are related to us. Instead of supporting people because of capability, dedication, good morale, political awareness, we will support people because they are from the same area with us, or because they are our family members, or because they helped us with jobs, money or other worldly material. This is where the sickness started. The sickness is widespread, and a lot of people are affected with this virus, unfortunately. Now to fight this and raise the level of tolerance and acceptance, we need to turn that **** off, and plant in awareness, which is why it is good to be in forums, newspapers, bloggs, et cetera to listen, read, write and cultivate your mental faculty.
The sad creeping pla, Sentimental division, succeeded in growing so tall with canopies that now to fight it will require a reform of many supposedly respected individuals in our Gambian society, when their order of the day is only to rot a society that was supposed to be decent and democratic.
It comes back to redemption. True redemption!! Surely the comforter to come (if any) is way over due.
Very soon, we will welcome to our parliament another bunch of lazy law makers, selfish, human worshippers, lacking in political education and those that will sink more than already has been, the ship of the state. They will vote in laws that will deny them "veto" powers, and "vote" power.
Sad!! Sad!! Sad!! Isn't it??
I rest my case!! |

There is only one answer for GAMBIANS to think of themselves as GAMBIANS first and foremost, not as members of a particular TRIBE,that day will never come. My comments about "Ethnic Units" were not to be taken seriously, but your clarification of that expression was very good I applaud you!
