This is the crux of the problem: THIS is what the government of the Gambia has to address urgently:
" this is not about Jammeh or Jawara or John. This is about us, our children and their future. How many of our young sisters, daughters die from premature birth due to simple complications at birth? How many of those babies die simply because there are no incubators to sustain their lives? How many people die or are maimed from malaria and simple diseases that are preventable? Worst of all sir, how many of our fellow citizens scarvenge at the Bakoteh dumpsite searching for rotten food just to live for another day? .........................Think about this sir breadman and join your brothers in tears" (DBaldeh) [/quote] |

I believe Jammeh still has a good chance to be able to leave the political stage with grace and respect. All he needs to do to earn this is to immediately turn things around . Among the things he could implement urgently will inclued : - A two term limit to presidency, - Give a time table for his step down within the next five years, -Absolute freedom of the speech , press , and political assembly, -Reduction of government wasteful spending on the previledged and spend more on the underpreviledged, - Appoint some opposition members in government (cabinet positions), - Scrap the NIA and strenghten the police force, - Move away from leftist and rogue states like Venezuela and Iran, - Release all political detainees and any other detainee who is pardonable, -Actively work with the Senegalese government to resolve the problem in Cassamance.
It is never too late . Actually it is better late than never. Time is running out . The longer he stays in power the more alienated and trapped he might become . |

Cheyassin formed a political party he called National Liberation Party before July 1981. He was later implicated in the July 1981 abortive coup that landed him in Mile Two Prisons. Coups are never civilised options to change government.
It is a misconception to count Jawara's wrongs as justification to qualify Jammeh's wrongs. A wrong by devils or angels can only be wrong. No wrong can ever make right.
You are right. Two wrongs dont make a right. |

Above all, Jammeh must learn to detach himself from the sentiments of power, opposition, they love, they hate etc. He already stayed more than two terms, a reasonable limit for a serving democratic president. It was this overstay that landed Jawara in the ever entangling maze of his life. Jammeh, you are not greater than Jawara. If he could fail, you could fail too. When anything goes wrong, these same sycophants will keep laughing at and about you. Had Saddam given up power he would have saved himself, his two sons and all his family. If your deceptors mislead you Jammeh to glue yourself to that seat, it is your family behind that will live to suffer. I would think you don't want that for them. Put to shame all those who believe they are deceiving you to hang unto power in their interest only to see you in deep soup. If there are people within the nets of Bantaba who have access to Jammeh, pass these messages. Certainly, you are in your own number reading and playing your secret roles. I could stand in front of a whole Gambian nation to confirm how some of you don't really care if Jammeh fails or not. Stop, it, be fair to a man who believes you are his protection. Are you fair? |

Believe it or not. We have Bantaba read by them. Kanilai too is wired. Even without his misinformants, Jammeh himself is capable to reach out for goods in cyberspace. Yes, Kons, they are alive with us. Here in Bantaba, there is no hiding about the truth. Faces may be buried behind keyboards. That itself is part of the beauty modern technology provides in excess. No worries Kons. Jammeh is more in trouble with those who smile for him with false pretends. I would think he knows that already. We are not enemies in disguise but potential distance friends in space. |

Well that is reassuring that they are reading Bantaba. Atleast we could influence their thought in some small way. I hope they also participate in the discussion. It should be a two way traffic. |

K_Jatta,
First of all these are great thoughts and i share all except one and that's the highlighted one. If his bread(Gambia's) bread is buttered by the free minded people like Cuba, Hugo Chaves, Iran, Taiwan etc so be it. No one should choose our friends for us. Any association should be based on trust and mutual respect. I will never tow the lines of the imperialists even if i were to feed on grass . Sekou Toure is reported to have once said that he would rather live in dignified poverty than live in enslaved affluence. In the eyes of the imperialists Sekou like Nkrumah was a dictator which was one of the biggest lies in contemporary history.Sekou's Guinea is 10times better than the Guinea of today in a so-called democracy.
