It takes two to tango. From what i have observed in the postings, its as though only one group is responsible. Its a demand and supply economics and both are culpable.
unfortunately your posting is the only one i will agree with. People are emotional and sometimes forget fundamental facts. ok some women are prostitutes because men want to pay for sex,. Fine, buglars exists because wealthy people leave their doors open, drug dealers exist because drug addicts exist.
there are poorer and more desperate women in The Gambia. you know what these women do, they raise families of tens of children, they go the vegetable gardens and grow crops, they sell peanuts in the streets. if you wish to excuse certain activities thats ok, but the rule of law must be applied to the letter.
TOURISTS DID NOT BRING PROSTITUTION IN THE GAMBIA. BUT TOURISM IS WHAT HAS TAKEN IT OUT OF THE DARK, TOURISM IS WHAT HAS MADE WOMEN SELL THEMSELVE IN THE STREET IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. IF YOU HAVE BEEN IN THE GAMBIAN IN THE 1960S,1970s,1980s YOU WILL SEE THE EVOLUTION OF THIS AND THE DIRECT RELATIONSHIP TO TOURISM.
every country has a right to solve its problems. In The Gambia prostitution is illegal.period the police are simply doing their job.
its difficult to catch the men to arrest them in the first place, but its also difficult to gain a conviction of these women. what do you think will be presented as evidence???
Are you sad that you had to side with me? . Are you always reluctant to agree with me eeven if it makes sense? |

Santanfara, thank you for showing that you are a human being with a heart. This is exactly so: some women are in this dangerous business because their menfolk failed them and someone should try to show them a way out.
I am relieved and grateful because of your response. I am sorry that for a moment i thought you were a narrow minded fanatic.
ANNA. no offence taken .when there is gab in communication there is bound to be misunderstanding and certainly you misunderstood me. the sharia will not hamper tourism, look at dubai. the sharia is a law that will protect the women adquately. other secular laws can do the job as well but ,islam is not some faith hellbent on bringing hardship and constraint in people's life. i am not a christian or jew but i spend a lot of time understanding this faiths. infact i have a good book about all this religions plus other religions. i have friends who are hindus ,sihks ,budhis etc. i talk to them from there understanding of life. i align with them in there concerns, why i understood there faith and backgound. try a little look at the laws of islam from good sources then you can conclude more accurately instead of rubbishing my suggestion.thanks anyway. |

i AM HAPPY THAT THE BROTHELS have been closed down, and the streets cleaned up, this was an organised criminal act and it is not good fro gambian image. If they want to attrract more tourists, things like this have to be control. Secondly this was run by other african nationals, who bring the bad business to Gambia. Prosititution will not go away but at least this way the numbers are controlled. |

jambo.you are quick to declare a success, but i say it is still a temporary one. let start protecting the women either gambian's or foriegn.we should start by marrying any one willing to get married and portray a positive image of them. if the women population are isolated and push to the lower digamy of the society we will not prosper. women bring us into this world ,so men should stop taken advange of there physical weakness. power to the women !!!.long live women emancipation and self-respect.we need to help them. holding every strong man is a strong woman. may god save us all. |

Is the only way to have a positive image of a women for her to be married?! MARRIED or PROSTITUTE is that the only choice?!
It is perfectly possible for a women to live an independent life without the support of a 'strong' man who protects her 'from her weakness'. In fact many women find their lives are improved after divorce when they dont have to look after a man. All that free time to do what they want!!!!
I cant believe in 2006 there are men out there that still believe they are superior to women!!!! |

SISTER YOU MIS-QUOTE ME. WE NEED EACH OTHER. I NEVER SAID WOMEN NEED A MAN TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL LIFE. THERE A LOT OF INDEPENDENT WOMEN OUT THERE WHO DON'T NEED ANY MALE PROTECTION BUT LOOK FROM WERE WE ARE DISCUSSING THE TOPIC NOT A GENERALISE WAY. BOTH MALE AND FEMALES CAN HAVE AN INDEPENDENT LIFE BUT I BELIEVE WITHOUT A SADDOW OF A DOUBT THAT A MARRIED UNION IS BOTH DIGNIFY AND UPLIFTING FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN. I SAID HOLDING EVERY STRONG MAN IS A STRONG WOMAN. I AM NOT IN ANY WAY BRINGING IN ISLAM HERE SISTER, SO CALM DOWN.I AM A MUSLIM AND TRY MY BEST TO LIVE BY IT ,YOU MAY BE A HUMANIST OR WHAT EVER AND THAT IS THE LIFE YOU LIVE. |
