OLDEST PROFESSION NJUCKS. NO ONE CAN COMPLETELY STOP IT JUST BY ARRESTING THEM. THE WOMEN NEED TO BE PROPERLY EDUCATED AND GIVEN A BIG FAT GUY TO DO THE JOB REGULARLY.

Surah- Ar-Rum 30-22
"And among His signs is the creation of heavens and the earth, and the difference of your languages and colours. verily, in that are indeed signs for men of sound knowledge." Qu'ran

Prostitution isnot about sex for the women! It is economic, they do it for money! Simple as!
Some will have husbands and boyfriends. They aren't sex starved!

Education and opportunities to earn a living in a safer way is the way to curb it. The women aren't the criminals. The men that USE them should be the ones being rounded up and shamed! Bet loads of them are good Muslims with wives and children. Sickening!!!!

Prostitution will never be stopped, so it is sensible to control it, and make sure the women are healthy and HIV free.

i should be grateful if you would suggest how the authorities should do that, knock on every house and look for the men??

you surprise me. but the law is the law. in our country its illegal to sell yourself for sex especially to stand in the street and do it so openly. whether the law is right or wrong is not the issue here, the point is at the moment its illegal. period. Perhaps you also think that drug traffiking cannot be stopped and drug dealers should be educated and given jobs!!!

there is no evidence to sugeest that the majority of the people using prostitutes are muslims (its irrelevant anyway), however there is overwhelming evidence that prostitution is directly linked to the tourism industry and most of the clients are tourists. thats a FACT. we have debated it here before and you have contributed to that debate.

i agree those tourists should not only be named and shamed but also fined or imprisoned before deportation!!!

Shakespeare was right ''Fe, Fi, Fo I smell the Blood of an Englishman''

(Gambiabev:The men that USE them should be the ones being rounded up and shamed!)
If the ant’s there a women’s the men will not be there and do their thing.
(Prostitution will never be stopped) that’s also an error, the other Islamic countries have done it,
at least in public. The Gambia is an Islamic country and should not tolerate it.
It’s against our religion as well as our culture! So no chance for Aids /prostitutions!

Of course prostitution is linked with tourism, but I bet there are also lots of Gambian clients. To name and shame all clients would be the best.

But making prostitution illegal seems to be a dangerous and useless way of dealing with the problem. Do you know that in THAILAND (!!!) prostitution is illegal? Did this end or even reduce it? Not at all. But because of this law, women can be easily exploited; corrupt policemen blackmail them, and no proper (health) control is possible.

Mbay, prostitution should never be encouraged, and everything should be done to control and reduce it. But as a woman I am sick of the hypocritical way MEN = THE CLIENTS, deal with it. Quoted from the afrol-article: "Right activists have always blamed The Gambia for commercialising sex trade but at the same time keep harassing sex workers." If you read the following you see the inconsistency: "The tourism industry in The Gambia has attracted government-licensed prostitutes from the entire region." (afrol). If prostitution is illegal - who gives the licenses?

I agree "PROSITUTIONS HAVE NO RESPECT IN EVERY CIVELISASION". But the men who are using prostitutes are respected. WHY??? This is hypocrisy in it's most advanced form.

this statement is a lie. No one is giving any one any licences for this in any African country. If there was a Press Complains Commission they would be made to withdraw it.

Thanks, Lemon Time. Another Bitter Lemon for you?

Njucks, in Germany we have such a commission, but sometimes (not always!) it acts like a toothless tiger. Anyway, I agree: Gambia would need a Press Complains Commission.

So that prostitution is definitely illegal in Gambia: Does it help? How consistent are the government's attempts to prosecute prostitutes, pimps, brothel 'managers' and traffickers?

And why does afrol write such nonsense?
