GROUNDUNT TRADERS VOW TO END CREDIT BUYING By Bubacarr K. Sowe
The newly formed Commodity Traders Association (CTA) has promised that the credit buying of groundnut will cease this season since a lot of farmers are yet to be paid their last season’s sales. In a three days sensitization tour across the country, the CTA said that the method adopted by The Gambia Agricultural Marketing Company (GAMCO) has resulted in the suffering of a lot of farmers.
Speaking on Monday at the office of the Governor of the North Bank Region, CTA”S Executive Secretary, Abdoulie Khan, said that groundnut traders are opposed to the credit buying of nuts. He also said they will be calculating the amount of money Gamco still owes farmers across the country. The Association’s President Ballu Manneh expressed that their objective is to salvage the farmers and give them a fair treatment.
The Governor of NBR, Eduwarr Seckan, welcomed their idea and advised them to decentralize the association. In the Central River Region they met the Governor Amulaye Janneh, who acknowledge that their intervention will remedy the frustration farmers are facing. “An experience person need to be involved in the decision making process,” he said.
The Assistant Governor of the Upper River Region, M-S.Kah, told the CTA that the sensitization will be crucial in their efforts. In the Lower River Region the Assistant Governor, Saul Njie, said he will discuss the matter with the Governor.
