Sorry Eve, I am off topic again.
Njucks, I asked my friend and she said she will offer lessons from February on; for externals (Gambians) she probably can offer Block-Seminare (don't know the English word). She'll bring all necessary books; scholars can pass an examn at Goethe-Institut in Dakar. I think her fees will be reasonable. Maybe this is interesting for you. |

It's okay serenata, interesting too.
And Lemon time, i don't think men are really strong to handle up to four wives, b'cos in this case, they may not able to plan for their future, life is getting harder everyday, how about the children, as for gambians we don't have allocation family help, each and every children depends to their families, how about me and my 10 children and i have no job, will only stay and said God is great, God is great, one day will come and to make those children happy is not easy, the children has to understand that our life is like this and live with it. Sometimes they said if one of those children grow up, might have luck and will support the families, but that child too need to help him/her self, will love to have wonderful family and do something maybe, but i and my 10 children, waiting for fatou to help as she can go on a bit. Wake up guys
Some times is too hard for us seeing our fathers beating our mothers for unnecessary things, perhaps we not having it enough at home and plus those things happening, as we grow up, life continue like that, few of our brothers try to be a human, respecting their woman, sometimes it is only b'cos of what they were seeing from our families.

Eve just to bring to your attention that domestic violence is prevalent within monogamous and polygamous relationships. And men aren't always the prepetrators neither are they always the adulters even within Gambian society. Traditionally in agriarian societies large families were need to work the land, and in many countries still are. And of course parent's have hopes that their children will lead more fortune lives then themselves in an ideal world. As more women have access to education in Gambia the birthrate will eventual fall. Economically we can see the disavantages of Polygamy when families are materially poor. However on benefit side there is a lot of social capital and social cohesion than in monogamous societies. i.e when relationships break down there is more exteneded family support compared to mongamous societies when one parent may have no other family members to support them in times of need even just emotional support. I think it's also important not inadvertly stigmatise women who are in polygamous relationships and their children.Although enmity can arise from being a product of a polygamous relationship if the guidelines of a man taking more than one wife wasn't observed in the first place just like children who are products of serial monogamous relationships.
Peace

Ist es dir unangenehm? Falls ja, warum? Why shouldn't we discuss this topic? Polygyny is a central part of the Gambian reality, and I think the purpose of this forum is to discuss many aspects of life, not only a few. But maybe you are right - a lot has been said about the pros and cons of polygyny. |

I think tobaski is an occasion when every woman is supposed to wear a new dress. How much would an approximate cost of a woman dress be, including fabric and tailoring? |

Bev, here are some of the Tobaski highlights:
Around 11am the men go for the prayers in the mosque or at a public place, after they slaughter the Tobaski rams (I always hide in very remote corners of the compound when the men do it ). When the rams are cut, the women prepare the first dishes (of course they started the preparation of vegetables and rice before). Then the grilling starts (in our family the men do it) and the order is for all three Tobaski days: Eat as much as you can!
Friends, neighbours and relatives visit the family and you repay the visit, bringing and receiving food. Don't forget to give some Dalasis or small presents to all the children coming on the second and third day! You may have never seen them before, but it is a custom like St. Martin's day in Germany for children to go around in the neighbourhood.
On the first day, the women dress in their new clothes after lunch. In the evenings people like to go for dancing; some discos are open for kids in the early evening hours (very cute!).
I love Tobaski! |
