1. It was in 1588, that Queen Elizabeth I of England granted Gambia to a company of Devon and London Merchants but they never had a settlement.

2. In 1618, King James I of England granted the Gambia to the Company of Adventurers of London

3. On October 26, 1651, The Courlanders(Latvian) established a colony iat St. Andrews Island, St. Mary's Island(Banjul) and Fort Jillifree. Banjul infact then had a Fort Called Fort Bayona. I have never heard of this fort. Can someone help and perhaps locate where this fort is. Is it in ruins or perhaps swallowed by the sea like the muslim grave yards?

4. On Feb. 4, 1659 to january 10, 1660, The Dutch occupied Gambia under the West India Company. Gambia was then called Dutch Gambia.

5. On March 19, 1661, The English occupied St. Andrews Island and other Courlander lands and renamed the island James Island and the fort as Fort James. I had raise this issue earlier on and some disputed it but its a fact. St. Andrews was Catholic and the English are not popular with catholic names.

6. On Novemner 17, 1664, the Courlanders formally ceceded all their lands to England and by August 1, 1669, these lands were sublet to Gambia Adventurers.

More will follow soon.

You seem to forget the following events:

1455 Alviso Cadamosto, a Venetian, sent by Prince Henry the Navigator, entered the Gambia.
1456 He reached an Island in the river where he lost a sailor named Andrew.
1458 Diogo Gomez visited The Gambia; sailed up to Cantoto (This might be kantora).

You are right i forgot about the portuguese. Cantoto could be Fatoto or Kantora mixed up in communication. Which ever way, it may be somewhere in that neighbor hood of Basse.

I also forgot about the travels of Mungo Park the explorer who died in Sami.
