33 WOULD BE IMMIGRANTS RETURNED HOME
By Abdou Yanka and Fabakary B. Ceesay

On Monday, 1st October 2006, thirty three (33) Gambians Youths were received and screened by the Gambia Immigration Officers in Banjul. The Youths were said to come back home after their attempt to journey on a make shift boat to Spain, through the Canary Island.

According to one of the returnees, they boarded the boat on Sunday 23rd September 2006 at the coastal village of Tanji. He told Foroyaa that, they spent five days and nights at sea before their boat docked at the port of Nouakchott, Mauritania. He said that the Captain explained that he had missed the route and could not make his way to Spain. Another returnee indicated that, he believed that the captain had played a trick on them and that he saw the whole thing as a game.

A twenty one (21) year old boy also said that, even though he knew the hardship and dangers involved, he will continue to try to get to Europe by any means necessary just to escape the hardship in the country.

According to the returnees, after they were screened by the Immigration Officers they were released. The hardships of the journey were clearly visible on their emaciated body and haggard look.

its very sad. i saw some pictures of bodies floating! these people are almost totally misinformed, they know that they are being picked up by the spanish coast guards and they keep trying knowing full well they're going to end up in detention camps!

perhaps they wrongly believe that Spain would be crazy enough to grant total amnesty again!

someone should inform them of their destination to save them the $100s of dollars they paying to end up nowhere!
