Here are a few directly translated Mandinka proverbs into English:

  • "YE RI DO NING FAN TO MU LI YA TA, BARI E DO MO NY AL FATTATA" (fan to is a tree)
meaning fruits of some trees may look alike, but eaten differently.

  • "N'TENG N'LA LA N'AA KO MA, WOTO ATA TA KO LONG LEH TO" meaning I can't go to sleep without my mom, then she is just gone to the well to fetch water. In other words, mom is not gone far and she will be back, but not if she dies.

  • "MO KUWOH TEH DUNIA LA, MO KENDEH KUWOH LAY BAY DUNIA LA" ( by Lalo Kebba Drammeh) meaning there is no scarcity of people in the world, but there is scarcity of really good people in the world.

  • "SENO KAH BANG NEH, BARI KUNKU NA NEUW BUKA BANG" meaning farming ends, but the demarcation between farms never disappears.
