How much does it cost per hour of Internet use (say email) in Gambia? Do college students use email much?

hi there, last time i was there it was 25dls for 30 mins at the internet near the traffic lights, 35dls for 30 mns at internet near Sarge's/Tafbel. some of those outside the main places are 15-25dls for 30mins. The YMCA internet at Kanifing was 20dls for 30 mins. I would give an average 50p for 30 mins. hope that helps

Gbev, I expect it will happen - from now on I will enter with -'hey Jambo' see if there is a reaction. But now I remember there are two sets of traffic lights to cope with.. except for the 'Gambian Boss'& his entourage If I was him,I would have to wait at a set for the sheer experience of it. Fancy going through life not sitting at traffic lights!! regards,

Maybe its time for a Bantaba "reunion"??
Do you think Internet cafe is a good steady business in Gambia? Also was thinking if outside the post office they could have a scribe on the laptop computer to write letters and send email for those who could not. It was an interesting momentary wild thought. |

You Kondorong are funny but sadly probably on the money in your remark.
How did the green boys get their name? Green as a colour is associated as a healing colour, . not the colour of torture, bloodshed, etc;.

Newfy, you have an interesting idea. For the price of the least expensive airmail to Europe or US, how many minutes of Internet Cafe time can one buy? If one can type a letter during that time, we have the basis for a small business transcribing snail mails to email! It will be much faster of course!

Please note that the cost of 30 minutes of internet use which is about 30 dalasis is more than what many earn in a days work. To those in the United States its cheap but infact worth a days fish money for a family of five. Think about that.
So the internet is still very expensive. A driver earns about D500.00 per month before tax. A registered Nurse earns about D1200.00 permonth gross. Therefore D30.00 per half hour of connection is very expensive by Gambian standards. ItS way beyond the reach of ordinary people. Infact dont try using the cafes with cheap rates like D20.00 per half hour. The machines are so slow, it takeS almost five minutes to be connected. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY. Do the math your self |

This is why I feel very honoured when my Gambian friends spend their precious dls on emailing me. I love to hear from them, but I am aware they are spending money that could be spent on food.
Green is my favourite colour. As a child I had reddish hair, so it suited me. BUT in Uk with older people it is considered unlucky. I always wondered why? My grandma explained that because they were poor they had green clothes to dye black for funerals. SO it is associated with death. My grandma came from a very traditional agricultural village in Leicestershire and she has a superstition for every occasion!!!
I like green because I think of nature and it is relaxing and peaceful. |

kondorong, your examples of income gives me good perspective on how expensive Internet access really is in Gambia. We're lucky and perhaps spoiled in US. Internet access is free in many public libraries. |

Kons, you are right about it being slow, anyway why send email, letter writing is still a nice art form. why is everything so quick. Send a letter, it may take time but they can hold on to it. anyone held an email. Western atitudes are not always right. |

jambo, you're quite right about the pleasure of a real paper latter. We received this most beautiful letter from a Headmaster in a school in Ghana with just the perfect handwriting, with no mistakes. It was a pleasure to read. It is our keepsake.
Two different uses for mail are emerging in personal communication. For matter of fact communication, email is fast, efficient, nicely organized for later recall. For matters of the heart (personal letters, invitations, thank you notes etc) paper-based letters are still the right thing to use.
There is much yearning for a beautifully handwritten letter on fine stationery using fountain pens, especially in the West!
