I've heard they started rolling out ADSL service and that it does indeed "work OK". Since it is ADSL, my guess is that availability will depend on proximity to the Central Office (CO) or exchange. I'm not sure where those are located or if there is more than one in place. I recently read they have only implemented one DSLAM, which would significantly limit availability. I know someone in Fajara who has the service and regularly gets download speeds of 300kps+, and pays about D1500-D2000 a month, if I remember correctly. IMHO, a bit expensive.
Based on the information on the GAMTEL website (information might be outdated),it looks like they have a tiered service offering:
"Hendu 256" and "Hendu 500" appear targeted for home type use with speeds of up to 256/128kbps(download/upload) and 512/128kpbs (download/upload) respectively.
"Meleh 1000" for "Business basic, fast web browsing, multiple user connections via [ethernet] port. ideal for ISP’s." with speeds of up to 1Mbps/256kbps(download/upload).
"Meleh 2000" for "Fixed IP address for permanent web presence, large file transfer, heavy downloading capacity..." with speeds of up to 2Mbps/512kbps(download/upload).
Apparently, service is only available "within a 3km radius of the Telecoms exchange."
You can read more about it in their FAQ: http://www.yegoo.gm/?part=6&spart=2&id_text=47
(Note: some of the text is badly formatted)
The prices quoted on that page do not appear accurate based on what I've heard but I'm sure if you call GAMTEL (+220 422-5262), someone there can confirm cost and availability. |

One way to share the cost of broadband among multiple neighbors is to use a WiFi Access point. The hardware is a one-time cost of $100. Say 4 neighbors can share the same broadband connection dividing their monthly expenses by four.
On another note, are WiFi Hot Spots found in Banjul perhaps?
The wired infrastructure is hard to build now. WiMax is an interesting technology in the works to enable wireleass broadband communication, with one tower per metro region and relatively low price points.

Ranga, that is a good suggestion. Hopefully Gamtel will not try to find excuses to block such arrangements. Excellent cost savings for budget families. |
