With all the pomp, how could one attend the summit when one is in debt and in arrear of memebership fees. In accordnace with AU protocols, memebers who owe money cease to have voting rights. So why attend and waste national funds just as a "guest"? There is no commitment on the part of memebrs for a union. How could they talk of a United states of Africa when we have PRESIDENTS FOR LIFE OR SELF APPOINTED EMPEROS imposing themselves on their people. We do not need an EU styled system beacsue it will be drain on national coffers.

Kon, You have to understand this perticular AU meeting was graced by the Gambia on our national coffers.Au had nothing to do with who attends and who don't.Gambian leader wanted to see all his compatriots and have benekin with them and disperse without comming to any kind of agreement.
(1)You know well if AU wants to discuss presidetial term limits, and the host country is amongst those countries who wants a life president,it will never be brought on the discussion table. (2)You know if AU wants to discuss real democracy and respect for the rule of law with strict adherence to human rights, the host country that is seen internationally as anti freedom of speech would not want that discussed on its soil thus give the oppositions something to campaign about. (3)You know if the AU wants to discuss global unity, countries who are at logger heads would argue over it and where does that leaves the Gambia as host which side would we be on?
With all the above,we are the only loosers with millions of cash thrown in thin air which could have been used on :
(1)Medicines for our hospitals, (2)Books and educational materials for our schools, (3)Morney to buy our farmers' groundnuts, (4)Morney to build our roads, (5)More morney for a better utility supply ect ect.
But God we have waisted all these for nothing.
Q.What has Africa achieved from the summit? Was it only to try Habre after waisting millions of Gambian morney? Q.What has the Gambia achieved from the summit? Was it only for Gambians to see face to face with some African leaders whom we see only on TV(despite only a few would actually see them face to face. The rest would still watch them on TV)? Q. Has the AU promised us anything in return after we have cattered for 90+% of their annual summit a poor country like us?
I see no reason why I would not come to your house if you tell me to come and eat free despite I owe our joint club morney and the rule was unless I pay,I cannot attend!Come-on you are either with us or against us!American style. peace Janyanfara |

kons, it was good for gambia to host AU, some other country would have done it. The fees, votes and rights were never the issue for some countries it was about attendence and being seen by the international media. The talk of US of Africa was to do with a united front. some people attend AU summit had to go via a european city to get to gambia, that is why people want a united continent. the US of africa is not popular, but Union of African Countries or Federation of African Countries is gaining popularity. Think about it if africans could travel across their continent on one visa that must be a good thing. |

Jambo, you are heartless. If there were borders like in EU, where should all the good custom officers get their bribery from? |

I am not against union if we are REALLY SERIOUS. THE Senegambia Federation failed because of costs relating to higher salaries and unsustainable privileges to employees of the Confederation who earned more than TEN TIMES the average salaries in both countries.
In Africa, it would mean more Jaguars, MERCEDEZ BENZES, LIMOUSINES AND FAT SALARIES FOR OFFICIALS, and INCLUDING THEIR NANNIES. If you have time please pass by the ACP Secretariat in Brussels. One of their problems is parking space. Average cars costs are so high that even the EU missions that finance them cant afford to buy.
Of course to travel to Kenya from Gambia takes at least 48 hours with a night stop in Addis Ababa or via Accra to Addis then Nairobi. However it is cheaper to travel Banjul-London-Nairobi-London-Banjul and much faster. In less than 24 hrs you will be in Nairobi for half the cost. I used to buy my tickets from Redcoat in London and collect my ticket at the airport. It is cheaper to travel London-Singapore return a journey of at least 13 hours one way than to travel Banjul-Johannesburg return which is about half the distance but twice more expensive not to talk of having to secure a visa. BY THE WAY, GAMBIANS DO NOT VISAS TO TRAVEL TO SINGAPORE. VERY FUNNY YET I NEED A VISA TO TRAVEL TO ADDIS ABABA. I had to get a visa for Tanzania and even Ethiopia for Gambians even though Addis is the seat of the AU. In fact as an African you have to pay your airport tax in Dollars not in the local currency. Eve if you have enough local currency, you are asked to buy the dollars from the government bank and then walk across the hallway to the airport officials and pay your tax.
Ethiopia should be visa free for all Africans. Even government officials pay for visas, which take at least 48 hours to process. I was almost denied entry in Tanzania because of the immunization certificate, which I misplaced in my luggage. I had to empty my suitcase to search for it. Yet Tanzanians are not required to have visas to come to Gambia.
