hi serenta, they would get briberies from other sources, they would not be broke. Kons my point exactly, a united continent would help trade, because if you can travel more you spend more. if your journey is difficult and going by the one you describe it is you don't travel. |

I tell you one reasons why africans dont like to buy flats is the concept of territory. They cannot fanthom owning a house attached to someone else's. If they own they want full control. No african country will be willing to give up any control no matter how small. It is the CONTINENT OF THE KINGS AND EMPERORS.
It will not work and we should just not waste money. The AU cost Gambia 700,000,000.00 dalasi equal to 26,000,000.00 dollars. Tell me , all you said was atlest the locals enjoyed the ceremonies for such amounts.
I hated the FUTAMPAF(wrestling matches in the Gambia) BUT I WOULD RATHER WE HAVE IT EVERY DAY AND A LOWER COST THAN THIS SUM FOR JUST THREE DAYS. THIS IS HOW RESOURCES ARE WASTED IN AFRICA EVEN MALARIA DRUGS ARE NON EXISTENCE, YET MILLIONS OF BABIES DIE BECASUE OF INFECTIONS AT BIRTH BECAUSE OF NOT HAVING STTERILE KNIVES TO CUT UMBLICAL CORDS WHICH CAN EASILY BE AVOIDED, MILLIONS DIE DUE MALNUTITION. RIGHT NOW NIGER IS IN A FAMINE AND MILLIONS ARE DYING FOR LACK OF FOOD, THE HORN OF AFRICA, WHERE HUNGER AND FAMINE HAVE BECOME A TRADEMARK ARE DESPARATE AGAIN BUT 26MILLION DOLLARS CAN GO INTO ENTERTAINING HEADS OF STATES WHO, WITHOUT ANY SYMPATHY LEFT MILLIONS IN THEIR COUNTRIES WITHOUT A MEAL A DAY AND CAN STAY AND FEAST ON NYAMA CHOMA and Nyama KUKU(Swahili word for roasted beef and roasted Chicken). By the time the summit was over, atleast 300,00 babies would have already died in Africa due to infections at child birth, lost to malaria, Aids or malnutition some of which are basic health care standards to be avoided through better sanitaton and hygiene standards. |

It seems very strange that you need visas and so on to travel within your own continent. We have got used to not needing documentation in Europe very quickly.
What are the reasons for these practices between African countries? |

Kondorong I agree with you 100%. Cancel all these cash guzzling things and spend the money where it matters and where it will make a difference!!!
Can I ask you on a similar thread, what has happened to the west african currency? Will that ever come to be? What is the time scale? and how much money has been spent on the idea so far?
I will post this separately too. |

Forget about that. I will never be. We missed the opportunity just before independence. It will just milk more money. Whenever you create a new layer in African organisation, you are only adding more cost and room for corruption and increased salaries and privildeges and fancy cars for the new born club memebers. An average daily per diem in Africa is US180.00 for every day a public official is overseas mission. in some countries this is over US200.00 per day like in Kenya. No wonder every one is always in a meeting of some sort and many conferences undending. By the time the AU is over, attending delegates would have been paid millions of dollars by their countries even though the mighty sheraton was free. |

Kondorong you seem very cynical and sad about your own people. Is there anything positive you can say ?
I have met alot of young people in Gambia and they seem so 'fresh' and optimistic. They value their education SO much and they respect their teachers.
But at some point comes the realisation that with all the education in the world there is not the employment in the Gambian and to achieve all they want to achieve they will have to apply for visas and leave the homeland. This makes me SO sad.
What can we do to stop the brain drain? Gambia needs its educated middle classes to stay IN THE GAMBIA. That way the country will really progress. |
